    Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Kids need a stable, predictable foundation to grow from. Prepper kids have parents who are extra vigilant about making sure those things will be there for them. It's like having a savings account or insurance policies.

    What many now call "prepping" is how we were raised growing up in 1960s/70s Louisiana on a 5 acre farm, fishing, camping, hunting, foraging etc. The big high school bully from the city found out when he messed with me that I had done a lot of farm work hauling hay, mowing several acres, hoeing fields and chopping firewood. I was suspended for a week and went fishing at our camp but he got hurt. Ha!

    The following will definitely harm kids:
    - malnutrition
    - starvation
    - waterborne illnesses
    - freezing in excess cold
    - roasting in excess heat/humidity
    - being assaulted by someone else or a group of people
    - severe illness or death from basic medical incidents (e.g. infected wound)
    Such issues are also great at preventing "the next generation". Go ask some folks in Ethiopia, Sudan, etc. what they think. Therefore, don't be stupid, assume the worst, and do as much as you can because "they" are orchestrating the permanent destruction of modern life as you know it, or worse.

    My kids grew up with prepping as a part of life. Gardening, canning, freezing, drying, foraging, taking care of animals gave them lots of skills. We heated the house with wood and they all learned the basics. They all talk about how they loved the way they grew up. They all use prepping themselves now.

    I’m not sure my daughter even knew that I was a Prepper, As I prepped meals I would tell stories of her grandparents. Same with sewing, with her mother. The best prepping advice I passed along in financial, “live below your means”.

    Kylene: I taught my daughters to cook and can and tried to teach them to sew. One daughter does none of those things, but my youngest daughter also gardens as well as cooking and canning. I personally grew up on a farm and we always prepared for the time period until the next harvest. My granny always said "hope for the best and prepare for the worst". I have always lived by that motto. Since we live in the mid-west I grew up with many weather related disasters from tornadoes to blizzards conditions that knocked out the power grid for weeks. Emergency preparedness is so important. I don't think it harms a child to be prepared for emergencies, and prepping for such things gives them a sense of security.

    This was uplifting. I needed this. My husband and I are older and I have serious health issues. But we’re trying our best to Be Prepared. We’ve had trouble, tho Church members, to find others that might be willing to help us with getting our finished basement shelved, organized, etc. We just need muscle! We’re getting the shelving, we have quite a bit of food storage, and equipment. We’re limited by living in a city with many regulations. Our lot is typical suburb house. We THOUGHT we had an electrician to give us an estimate for having a switch so that we could have that ready for a generator we have, instead of running cables thru the house from it. He never showed up or even text us or called us! And he came on good recommendation! I definitely needed the hope that this video brought, I was a tad low all week. It can seem overwhelming. Yes the scriptures say it all. Love them! I wish we had you two for a week! But we’d probably never let you go! You have so much knowledge, and tho I don’t always understand everything you are so helpful. Thank you. ♥️🇺🇸

    Our 2 children grew up with chores to teach them how to work. We had a peach tree and an apricot tree in our small yard. Picking the fruit wasn’t hard but when it came to canning, the battle began. I didn’t enjoy being the task master but it was important that they learned. Our adult son is on board with prepping but our married daughter is not…So her 2 children are missing out.
    The few times we’re together, my grandchildren enjoy checking out my raised bed garden to see what’s growing and if there’s anything they can pick to eat. They also enjoy pulling the hose out to water the plants. This gives me a little hope that they will remember these days and, hopefully, spark a desire to garden in the future.

We also found a Survival Training Camping Course in our area that was VERY kid friendly and took our oldest - he got to learn so much over the wknd (shelter, fire, water, first aid, etc). Does Sam grow broccoli sprouts in his Apt? Is there a community garden near him? I was surprised how much one can grow on a 10x6 raised bed plot. Real potential to experiment with confined spaces owned by someone else. Service animal chickens ?
    We didn’t call it prepping… More like my Mom believed in the scouting motto “Be Prepared” and believed in keeping extra shelf stable food in the pantry (2 weeks - 2 months), showed us how to can apricots from former orchard trees in our yard using canning jars & equipment given to her as a teenager from a farming relative that showed her how as teenager.
    Well, I got surplus citrus from one relative, took it to the home of a niece to prepare & dehydrate lemon & oranges. Got another relative with an extra unused dehydrator to give it to said niece because she was using her oven. Stuff like that.

    My Crowder Peas are blooming early this year and my okra is very close to producing. I`m eating 5 to 7 cucumbers a day and lots of blackberries and planted two types of Ground Cherries for the first time this year. I also planted 16 more fruit trees. I`m having problems with the pillbugs eating young greens but they enrich the soil so I`m letting them have them. The seeds fell everywhere when I harvested seeds this year. I`ve been adding all my grass clippings to the garden to build soil and those bugs are in there by the billions breaking it down.

    • @christinereoch5270
      @christinereoch5270 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@christinereoch5270 I have basil and lemonbalm scattered about my garden. I don`t use rows and have a variety of plants growing together all year. I did make about 7 elevated areas about 30 inches across for melons, squash, tubers, onions and such with wagon loads of forest soil. Armadillos hate hot pepper so I coat the mulch to repel them and dust peas with it to keep the friendly bunny away.

    • @christinereoch5270
      @christinereoch5270 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You’re doing better than I. I’m also growing lemon balm, sage, thyme, marigolds, and others, for the same reason. I’m in my 4th year of gardening. Using neem oil and diatomaceous earth, food grade, in the garden. Trying to grow organically. In northern Florida.

      🧄🧄🧅🧅 Garlic, leeks, onions, green onions, chives, garlic chives, marigolds, are plants that repell a host of garden pests. So plant them in diverse places, and around fruit trees, and everywhere. Chives self seed, and these beautiful plants also come back next year.

    • @baneverything5580
      @baneverything5580 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@christinereoch5270 I`m doing my best to stay as close to organic as possible but sometimes a certain plant will need spot treatment with bug dust to stop an infestation and since I have 30 pounds of various hydro nutrients I use to grow indoors and in buckets I`ve added some in water to my best melon plants and sometimes to a fruit tree. The soil was bulldozed away long ago here so it`s an unusual situation and has been very difficult getting started building rich soil.
      I used organic fertilizer, lime and bone meal to prepare for growing turnips, beets, rutabagas and carrots this coming fall/winter/spring. My test plantings were a success in one area but another area is still breaking down into compost so I`m growing my pole beans and cucumbers there. Carrots and radish there made no tubers. I got a huge bag of easier to grow Paris Market Carrot seeds for my fall planting. Those have been the best for me and produce tubers fast. Danvers didn`t grow right.

Also keep in mind that just because you currently live in an apartment - doesn't mean you always will, even a house on a smaller property can have a garden regardless if it's in pots, raised beds, or in the ground.

    Too many view the word prepping as a crazy person project or a dirty word but it should be a word to define common sense. There are a lot of 'preppers' out there and on you tube and other social media sites that are fear tactic driven. Avoid that road. Also, not only should we be Earthly prepared but spiritually prepared as well. Take one day at a time, precept upon precept and build upon it. It is a never-ending pursuit.

    My kid is still elementary school aged, but he's grown up with a prepared mama. He's used to hearing the canner in the background, now that he's older he sometimes helps with filling the jars. He also knows that he can suggest things to "stock up on", he also knows that we're really unlikely to run out of any of the necessities. I hope that as he gets older he sees the value of it, and does the same when he is on his own.
    I know that he doesn't worry about power outages, the water being shut off due to problems, or even earthquakes. "We're prepared for that" he says. Smart kid ;)
    My 2 cents: I think that "Doomsday Prepper" series that was on NatGeo a decade or two ago made all the "normal day preppers" seem like that were wackadoodle crazypants preppers. Most preppers are not all about the TEOTWAWKI.

    I believe it is good for healthy children and teens to spend time out of doors learning how to camp, forage, cultivate a vegetable garden, ride horses, raise rabbits or poultry, swim, build a safe campfire, cook over a campfire, build a primitive shelter, use a map and compass, avoid dangerous wild animals, perform basic first aid, fish and perform basic self-defense martial arts. I believe these survival skills help develop self-confidence and can also be useful in adulthood when the child matures and wants to travel to primitive locations and go on adventure vacations or volunteer to help in third world countries or just deal with a local grid down.
    A child who only knows how to stay indoors in the air conditioning and play video games, text on a smart phone, surf the internet or take in-home music lessons or be chauffeured by a parent to organized team sports or dance instruction is missing a lot of skills-building and may fail to become a well-rounded adult who can take care of themselves during uncertain times. If parents do not know enough about outdoor activities to teach them, then scouting organizations, 4H groups and summer camping instructors can teach some of these skills. And parents can buy lessons for their children from instructors who will teach how to ride a horse or sail a small sailboat or ski or block a physical attack, etc. The duty of a parent is to help the child and teen learn how to become a law-abiding and independent adult who can take care of themselves and help others.

    The teaching has changed. Have you noticed that? Even inside of us, that do these things, God is shifting our focus, and showing us a different path to take, to teach. You guys HAD to learn this, sweat drop, by sweat drop, in order to start your journey into teaching.
    What so many are unaware of, or even consider...If something terrible happened. Throw a dart at a list- especially in this time. If THIS was to only occur in the boundaries of my town, my street...How would I and my family exist, during and after?
    I'm in a hurricane group, and we live learning, preparing, and teaching. People almost always focus on their town, their street, and make sometimes, life giving or life taking decisions based on that small picture, without considering the picture as a whole.
    We don't prepare for " the infamous Hollywood, apocalypse" were the good guy finally gets his family back, after he saves the world. We live in reality.
    We live in the, mom had a tree fall on her. Dad fell off the ladder and got seriously injured....On the flip side, we live in, I am SO thankful to Adonai that HE had me pick up 2 mega packs of TP, 2 weeks before the sickness hit the fan.
    We didn't run out, and we actually got to share. Yeah, it's TP..But my Aunts who were in their 80s were able to take a deep breath because they didn't have to go fight the people, from other towns, waiting for the doors to open, and swarm the aisles for the last pack of TP...
    Lord there is no one to put me in the water, when it stirs! BE the one that says, you don't need to go into the water...I'm here! Be the light of the Lord, THAT day!

      I absolutely LOVE your comment! Amen! That pretty much sums up my thoughts on prepping. It is about taking reasonable steps, loving our neighbors, and being an instrument in God's hands! Thank you for being part of the solution!

    The overacted emotions make it way too American for me - not in a good way. It's simply distracting. Content is fine though.
