    Led Zeppelin gave Sandy Denny her own rune on the liner notes to their fourth album for her part on "The Battle of Evermore". The lyrics allude to The Lord of the Rings -- "The ring wraiths ride in black, ride on" -- then Sandy Denny sings -- "Sing as you raise your bow \ Shoot straighter than before \ Oh dance in the dark of night \ Sing to the morning light" ... She was the only other singer to ever appear on a Led Zeppelin album. She can really sing. Her work with Fairport Convention is quite masterful. For a taste, check out "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?", "Farewell, Farewell", "The Ballad Of Easy Rider", and "She Moves Through The Fair" among others.

      Later, in the 1990's when Page & Planet did their "Un-Ledded" reunion, and tours, Najma Akhtar, did the c0-vocals. And as Robert P' has toured with American Bluegrass musician Alison Krauss, she has been the duet' voice.

    The mandolin on all of their studio recordings is by the often overlooked, multi-instrumentalist of the group; bassist, keyboardist, guitarist...John Paul Jones.

    The story goes that Fairport Convention we’re recording in the next studio along to Led Zeppelin, but LZ we’re playing so loud they couldn’t get anything down. So Sandy Denny, someone who was never intimidated by anyone, went over to LZ to complain. Plant invited her to lunch and then asked her to contribute vocals on this track.
    You have heard Sandy Denny before, when you reacted to FC’s version of Marty Groves. Highly recommend you check out more, such as Who Knows Where the Time Goes, or another traditional ballad like Tam Lin. One of the all time great singers and sadly not as well known as she deserves. RIP Sandy Denny.

    • @lyndoncmp5751
      @lyndoncmp5751 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello
      Well, Sandy Denny had long left Fairport before Zeppelin were recording IV so that can't be true.
      Zeppelin met Sandy at the 1970 Melody Maker awards in September. Plant won best male singer, Denny won best female singer. Lots of pictures of them together from that day. I think they knew each other before anyway. Plant and Bonham were already good friends with the Fairport folks.
      I suspect at the Melody Maker awards they chatted about Sandy guest appearing on the next album, which they hadn't yet started recording.
      Cheers.

    • @lbd-po7cl
      @lbd-po7cl ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lyndoncmp5751 I didn’t mean to say LZ were recording IV at that time, just that they were in the same studios as FP when they met. At least, that’s the story I’d heard, but it could be spurious. The two bands also shared a bill at the Bath festival in mid 1970, and while I don’t think Sandy was on the bill for the festival, considering the lineup I wouldn’t be surprised if she attended. They were all moving in overlapping circles around that time.

    • @lyndoncmp5751
      @lyndoncmp5751 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Id say it was one of those urban myths that grew.
      On double checking Plant said he invited Sandy to sing on it as he felt it needed another voice so it would seem the plan was already there to bring Sandy in before they even started to record it. 👍

    Sandy Denny was considered the first lady of British new folk for her work with Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, The Strawbs and a loose one-off 1972 recording called Rock On by The Bunch, a Who's Who of Brit folk-rockers joyously paying tribute to their American inspirations. Denny's pristine voice was silenced forever when she died in 1978 from a head injury caused by a tumble down some stairs. She was just 31. So sad.

    Sandy Denny was an amazing singer, she, unfortunately, passed away in April of 1978, at only 31. Her death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage resulting from a fall down the stairs during a holiday with her parents and her baby daughter, a few weeks later, she then suffered another fall at her home. Sandy then started suffering severe headaches, she was prescribed painkillers. Not sure if any brain scans were done to show the extent of the two falls. By the end of April 78, Sany went into a coma. Besides Sandy's important classic vocal on this song with Led Zeppelin, she was mostly known as the female vocalist in the British folk band, Fairport Convention. R.I.P. Sandy.

    The comment that choosing Sandy Denny for this song was close, but not quite on. I'm pretty sure the song was written because she was to be part of it. One of my favorites for sure.

    Jimmy page was a huge fan of moroccan instruments! That is one of the reasons why the instruments such as the mandalin is tuned the way that it is and is constructed , and it's composure the way it is as well because of those instruments that led into this era of zeppelin!

      How is the mandolin tuned in this song? I play it using standard GDAE tuning. I was fairly certain they did too. It doesn't sound different when I play it in standard tuning.
      Mandolins are European instruments, descended from earlier lutes like the mandore and gittern, but probably ultimately from earlier lutes-like instruments (ouds, barbats, etc) originating in the Middle East and introduced into Europe by way of Muslim Spain and Sicily.
      The closest lute-like instrument to the mandolin in Morocco that I'm aware of would be the oud, but it doesn't really sound like a mandolin. The gimbri sounds even less like a mando.

    The Lord of the Rings weas a series of of 3 novels by J. R. R. Tolkien written in the 1940s as a metaphor for the devastation that Fascism caused in that time period.

      They were published in the 1950s, after many years of writing. Your interpretation is a valid one that we can have, but the primary reason Tolkien wrote the trilogy and other books was to create an imaginary pre-history for Great Britain to replace what was lost from the invasions of the Romans and those that followed.

      Tolkien denied vehemently that they were written as a metaphor for anything. We may read them that way, and he says he's happy to let people take from them what they will, but he most definitely did not write them to be allegorical or metaphorical in any way.
