Hello, Yma (1922-2008) was unique in this world, her G#2 - Bb72 vocal range, could not be matched by anyone, she could sing as a man and all the range of a woman. her biography is very interesting. you can hear "Taita Inti" very sharp, "Tumpa" and the harmonization with a flute in a concert (1960). Hugs!!!!!!!!!!

Hello, all the sounds of the forest and birds, were recorded by her before, of course, let's keep in mind that it is a recording from 1958, without musical arrangements. She also sings in Spanish and English. In 1989 (67 years old) she sang for Disney "I wonder" (in English) from the film "Sleeping beauty". She had a unique vocal technique! HUGS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello, Andrei understood who Yma Sumac was singing to because she did not study singing and learned to sing by imitating the sounds of the animals and the nature of her people..... Yma Sumac said that she sang to the animals and nature.

Andrei catched the vibe of the song and yes, you were right ! She is imitating the creatures of the Jungle but also the wind, the atmosphere in an aspect more "abstract" of what "being in the middle of the Jungle" can mean for example, the hesitation of being surrounded by the wild and row nature. Greetings😊

Thank You for reacting to this!! I'm familiar with Yma Sumac as my mother had one of her albums. Her octave range is from another dimension. WOW!!! She is of Incan heritage and the P.R. back in the day had her being an Incan princess. Perhaps, who knows. Her incredible gift is what should be celebrated!!!

thanks for the reaction to yma sumac. 🇵🇪👍🏼 in this video she imitates the sounds you can find in the jungle. With her voice, how difficult it is to reach such varied voice ranges is what makes her special. in the world to this day there are very few who can do it 🙂👍🏼

In this song, Yma Sumac uses the triple coloratura, a singing technique that she's the only one to ever achieve it. She plays with the fundamental note and then reduces it's sound so the armonics of this note are more noticeable, giving the effects of hearing 3 notes at the same time. She is the kind of master that is born every thousand years. She never had a teacher or trainer, she just imitated the birds. Her songs are mostly made to show her vocal skills and techniques, that's why they may seem weird, and not melodically like we are used to. That rusty voice is not made in the throat, she uses her tongue so the sound can be distorted by the uvula

Lex Baxter had a huge hand in a lot of her songs. It was called "Tiki" music that evoked exotic Hollywood images .She had an amazing voice for sure. It was style of music that evolved after the servicemen got back from the Pacific war. There was a whole 'exotic style ' that originated in Hollywood and you can hear it and that in no way degrades it .

I think there is a disconnect because the audio and video are not sync'd up so it's hard to tell what sounds she is actually making with her voice. Clearly, it's a problem with the original video so it can't really be fixed.

THE VOCAL ACROBATICS!!!! That's what this song is about: no lyrics, no meanings, nothing esoterical BUT JUST THE SOUNDS THIS WOMAN CAN MAKE WITH HER VOICE!!!!!! She taught herself to sing imitating birds, this is the closest to the "jungle".
This song was written for her to exclusively show what she could do with her voice, hence the "odd melody".

I guess your wife was expecting a classic song-with-lyrics. This is not the case. Yma Sumac went beyond this structure in music. And I must recommend her that she think of Yma Sumac in her context/era.
