  • The Retro Video Series takes an exploration of the John McTiernan-directed adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel "Eaters of the Dead" that became THE 13TH WARRIOR, and the combative fallout of its troubled production and box office failure. Not to mention, the physical media scarcity of the film including its out of print Remastered Limted Edition French Blu-Ray release.

Great job with the video Nick! I loved The 13th Warrior ever since i first saw it years ago, and at one hand it's sad how badly it bombed, but it's nice to see how over the years it got this strong cult following, which it really deserved. I always wanted to see McTiernan's original 127 minute Eaters Of The Dead cut, but at this point, i'm pretty sure we'll never get to see it, which really sucks. I did read the original script for it, and while i do think how many of the deleted scenes would make the film even better, there are some parts which were added in re-shoots which i do like. But one thing which i always had problems with is deciding which score do i like more, Goldsmith's or Revell's. Like you said, Goldsmith did fantastic job, but at the same time i think Revell's score is one of the best rejected film scores, but that's just me.
I don't think i ever heard anything about workprints or such of the film floating around, but you're right, there were work-in-progress versions of the film which were shown at various test screenings. Interestingly, some with Revell's score, and others with temporary score, and funny enough, one of those was Revell's score from The Crow, which could explain those similarities you noticed between the two.

I blind rented this in high school and was pleasantly surprised at how entertaining it was....the language scene was kind of funny(even back then), but it progressed the plot, so whatever 🤷

Yeah, a convenience for being able to move the story along fluidly. As I mentioned, it was a similar trick McTiernan used with the Russians in The Hunt For Red October.
