Dissolving Concrete in a drain trap.

  • This is about my attempt to remove concrete that had cured in a shower drain trap. The concrete had been in the trap for more than 2 years. There was a small flow in the drain. It would drain a 3" shower depth in 20 or so minutes. Of course it only took a minute or so to flood that deep. This would make taking a shower pretty difficult. I used a product called "Speedy Klean Concrete Dissolver". It is a non acid product that claims to dissolve mortar, grout and cured concrete. I had thought about using various acids to attack the concrete in the trap but was concerned about harming the other pipes. I had already tried all of the types of drain cleaners, plungers, a commercial powered snake and the products that screw onto your garden hose and force water down the drain. I did rent and use a sewer jetter which I would recommend over using a snake anyday. After the concrete was removed I cleaned the pipes with a radial tip. The drain flow is now better than just about any drain I have ever seen. I would try this technique before giving in to destructive techniques. Total cost on the tool rental was $78.00. I believe the Concrete Dissolver was $13.00.

    Thanks so much for this!! I had demolition debris in my tub drain, and you gave me a ray of hope. I have an old fashioned bath with the drain being a pipe on the side of the tub.
    I used a wet/ dry vac.
    Vacuumed out the drain so that it was dry, then poured in sakrette concrete dissolver in 4 steps, 1/4 bottle at a time without rinsing. 15 minutes between each application. Used one 22 oz. bottle.
    Vacuumed out and had a mountain of beige, gritty foam that stunk.
    Step 2
    Repeated adding sakrette, again in 4 steps 20 min apart. Another 22oz. bottle.
    Rinsed the drain, was not draining, but sucked out water with the vacuum- water was black, stinky, and full of grit.
    I did this a few more times, until the water coming out was reasonable clean.
    Voila! I've had water running for about a half hour now and the drain is totally clear.
    Thanks again!

    Thank you for this knowledge and video! Thanks to your example, after I had a guy take a picture of the concrete in my drain (that a 4000 PSI sewer jetter did not even budge), I used another product by "Cleen Brand" (yes.. it has two e's in Cleen) "Super Concrete Dissolver" that I found on Amazon - I had to get a gallon... I poured 12 ounces in every 15 minutes 4 times... The 4th time it sounded like it was flowing. I waited another 15 minutes (as it says to not let it dry) and then ran hot water full blast for 10 solid minutes before it backed up a little....Prior to this, It would back up in about 10 seconds... I just wish I had found this before I hired a plumber... Awesome find! Good luck all... It was totally non toxic... I tried to suck out the sludge, but had no luck as I didn't have a perfect seal on the pipe with my shop vac, but it didn't seem to matter.

      +Dan Sherwin Take your time and be patient with the product. I vacuumed out the drain first to minimize the dilution.

      I found it at a local hardware store. The web says Walmart has it. I also notice Sakrete offers a similar product but I dont know about its results.

    Coca Cola ($2.69) it is cheaper and it softens the grout or mortar- used a snake to clear the blockage. Water flow great.

    How long did it take for the jetter to work? Didnt you have a bunch of water spraying all over until the jetter punched through?

    • @CncObsession
      @CncObsession  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a wet vac to pull out the additional water prior to using the jetter. The jetter is very high pressure but not ,much volume. It did concern me but the clog was gone before it was a problem, thankfully.

      @@CncObsession O.k. i have a problem with a grout filled 1.5" abs p-trap shower pan. I got the grout out of the bottom of it by breaking up the grout with a hammer and breaker bar and vacuuming the pieces out. I could see more grout stuck on the other side. I will probably use that concrete dissolver and a drain bladder for the rest.

    Hi! When we had a fence installed in our backyard 3 years ago, we've clogged our drain with concrete ever since. Can we do this same process to unblock the drain?

    • @CncObsession
      @CncObsession  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont see why not. Just let it sit in the drain for a few hours or even overnight. Try to remove all of the water prior to using it.

      Not sure. The visible piping is pvc, however the units were built in the 70's sometime. So it could be anything (and most likely is) It is still working today though. No problems so far, hope this doesnt jinx it ;-)

    Did you vacuum out the dissolved concrete with something before you used the sewer jetter? Just wondering if the concrete would harden further down the pipe if not removed first.

    • @CncObsession
      @CncObsession  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I did not vacuum out the dissolved concrete. I did vacuum out the water in the drain prior to pouring in the Speedy Klean. I wanted to minimize any possibility of dilution. I believe once it was broken down that I purged the system with enough water flow and force to minimize the risk of resettling and hardening. In fact it flows great today too. Unfortunately the dryer broke yesterday, so there is always something ;-) This is my Monster in laws place, I mean Mother in law.
