Corn Intercropping: Forage Soybeans

  • One of the main reasons corn intercropping has been unsuccessful in Western Canada is limited herbicide options. This forces farms to seed intercrops post herbicide application - limiting growth potential (sunlight & water). Forage soybeans are glyphosate tolerant to minimize these herbicide & management headaches.

    - Regulate the soil temperature (protect the soil from hot summer temperatures)
    - Provide high protein biomass for grazing after silage or corn harvest
    - Provide residual nitrogen for next year’s crop
    - Balance the C:N ratio of the soil (improved water infiltration & water holding capacity)

    Could you put the beans in at the same time with a split row planter?
