    Old timers used manure fertilizer and compost, everything made on the farm. It's all about the soil health! Thank you for posting your results.

    Mr. Mcgie have you thought of getting a dog for your homestead and family. We raise and breed original Japanese ancient dogs here in Japan. The dogs are called Shikoku Ken and Kai Ken and are amongst the most ancient and loyal dogs and are great for homestead properties. Our dogs protect our homestead protect our chickens and land and give happiness to our family. The last puppy named Roga we shipped to Hawaii and they love him. Something to maybe think about.

    Impressive! You might want to try using some of the soybeans for edamame. Edamame is green[immature] soybeans boiled in the pod. After cooking, you salt them heavily, then eat them by squeezing the beans out of the pods into your mouth. Delicious! You can

      We’re in the edge of the red clay and sandy loam. We have both depending upon how much erosion took place over the past thousand years. This land set unused for 50+ years and was able to regenerate pretty well……. Then I came along and started building it up even more.

  • @10peteo

    I always learn something new, thanks for all the great information.
    Have the Buffalo run up the river, or did you miss them ?
    The old timers would plant the corn and let it get up a bit, cultivate it once, then run geese on the field to weed it and fertilize the field at the same time. I cant remember for sure, but it seems like they let the corn get 10 or 12 inches before they let the geese out on it, so they wouldn't eat the corn.

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures
      @McGieHomesteadAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The buffalo run happened when the water was up and muddy so we missed out.
      That’s a very interesting idea! I like it!

    • @10peteo
      @10peteo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@McGieHomesteadAdventures you should see if you can run a hoop net on that river for the Buffalo.
      A commercial fishing license in Illinois is about $36 I think.
      If you got enough you could trench the heads and guts to fertilize the tomatoes and corn.

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures
      @McGieHomesteadAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t! I’m still learning! And probably will continue for a long time! There’s many questions that need to be answered, but I’m watching something amazing happening as the corn has to be fertilized last year, but not this year……… so I’m confident that the improvements are substantial!!!

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures

      Same tonnage per row. Just less rows. The point was to feed the soil. The previous year I had to side dress. That’s all a thing of the past now.

  • @duncand5148
    @duncand5148 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Durano clover is hard to get established unless planted early spring. Definitely not a hot weather planted clover. Summertime sunn hemp, or soybeans are your best bet brother. Try or experiment if you want, but on a larger scale, stick to what you know.

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures
      @McGieHomesteadAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks brother…… I’m all about experimenting….. but we’ll see! Someone else was recently telling me about sun hemp!

    • @duncand5148
      @duncand5148 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I told you about me planting sunn hemp after wheat and that I was going to follow the sunn hemp with crimson clover. Sunn hemp produces 120-140 pounds per acre and TONS of biomass. Besides my goats love it and deer love it too. Don’t get me wrong, Durano clover is heat and drought tolerant, but the timing and need for early establishment is going to be a slight set back for how we farm. Another drawback is that it’s a perennial. That alone is indicative of the type and timeline of establishment needed to get a good stand, and good nitrogen production. We need our fields ready to plant when we need to plant.

      BTW your corn looks amazing!!! Can’t wait to see the harvest. My truckers looks good too. I still grow my conventional non-gmo hybrids. I’m a one man show and I have to make sure I maximize on the yield. I grow truckers every year just to maintain an open pollinated seed bank just in case I can’t buy my hybrid seed. But my truckers this year looks exceptionally good and my hybrid corn is some of the best corn I’ve grown in my life. I’m Pulling early corn now for feed and the ears are so big and beautiful, I hate even feeding it to the hogs. I almost want to hold on to it just to look at. 😂😂😂

    The corn looks good.
    I assume you are making silage again this year. Instead of using that corn knife hacking at the stalks, I would recommend you try a garden hoe. Sharpen it good and keep a 10 inch file in your back pocket to keep it sharp. I can cut cut 4-6 stalks at a time. I'm shure Joel and David could do just as well. Keep it sharp and turn it at a slight angle to cut through the stalks. Just like a draw knife a little bit of an angle let's it work better.

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures
      @McGieHomesteadAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I’m not doubting you one bit, but you have to keep both hands on the hoe handle. We don’t like bending over to pick up the corn to make the piles. A machete is the ticket. We don’t use knives 😂😂😂
