    I used to feel bad, binge watching all these Letterman videos just for the tomfoolery. Then I noticed they are categorized under Education. Now I feel much better, knowing each video is enriching my mind.
    Thanks, Professor Giller!

      You joke but it's interesting, this is an archive of many artistic endeavours, from the broadcasting, to the performers, to Chris and Larry "Bud" Melman **from a bygone time**.
      For most this broadcasted show was ephemeral nightly entertainment. To our beloved archivist, it was something to be saved, and we are grateful for it.
      So it most definitely is educational. It preserves the past in as high a quality as possible so we can observe and learn from everything from the broadcasting style, the comedy of the time and its influence on what we have now, the fashion or films or books of the guests.
      It is educational and fascinating and I really love that this channel exists. I adore it.
      Edit: also the music!

      @@kjkiefcakes1847 Makes sense to me. Also, NBC found it so valuable they essentially stole it, so it must be the height of programming. I'm not saying all current late shows are bad, they arent. They are definetly different though and i like how freewheeling someone im already familiar with was when all of his ideas were by definition, new and fresh. Great stuff.
      I also wonder if part of the reason people tend to trash the Late Show is if a lot of these great bits and running gags were basically buried out of spite by NBC. It seems to me he didnt do the older style mainly because he couldn't

    For all of you commenting on Terri Garr: First, I think she's fun, natural, raw, and beautiful in this episode. Secondly, she had begun to notice symptoms of multiple sclerosis a year earlier while working on Tootsie and was already taking medications for the symptoms.

    How was "Late Night" so good right out of the gate? It took Conan O'Brien a couple of years to get his footing when he took over. Somehow, Letterman's show was fantastic from its launch in 1982. In fact, the early years were the best of his career, in my opinion.

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave had experience both as a broadcaster and stand-up comic as well as a tv writer. Conan had only the latter.

      @@dongiller I've seen Dave hosting the one and only season of the Starland Vocal Band Variety Show in 1977. I never would have expected him a few years later to be so good immediately with his own late-night show, but he did have practice with his failed morning show.

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@makeadifference4all Dave didn’t actually “host” that show. There was a reason it was called “The Starland Vocal Band Show.” It was just a summer replacement show. He was one of the writers and handled the voice/over for the show open as well as participate in sketches.
      Most or all of the shows have been uploaded on YT.
