just stumbled across this video .me and a friend did the winter 2014 ,just watchin this reminded me of the pain and total enjoyment of it ,it is a great event and well organised by ken and the team ,i did say never again but you never know .......
Absolutely bang on about the cameraderie,I met some great people who looked after me as I was going down with dehydration and managed to finish and get my patch.
Wouldn't expect any less. The Fan Dance can be hazardous to your health. Great bunch of people. Done three and what you say is spot on. 2022 anyone?
Can't believe i'm gonna be giving this a go in less than a week.
I only ever did this in the winter, gutted that I lost a flip flop and my speedos got ripped to shreds.

@@colinstewart1432 Yeah, I agree, I did it back in 2015 and loved it, and it was HARD. But rewarding, and I'm just about to join the Army now, so it must of had some affect on me!

I did that route in wellies when I was 18. My first trip to Bannau Brycheiniog. Now I rarely go there. Far too popular .
Tricky one to specifically train for if you don't live in a mountainous area.
If you think this is tough, you should try the puffer (24hr bike race in January - usually snow, rain, frost, wind etc).
29th 2020 was the worst weather when I done fan dance with 3 others . 6 hours there and back …amazing experience. Break your boots in a few months before , carb up 2 days before, 2liters of water at least , bananas
, sodium/mineral tablet half way through. Good luck ..
I plan on doing this next summer but live in flat boring Essex.Could anyone give advice on training/gym workouts and any footwear and equipment tips would be gratefully accepted.

Seriously boots. Goretex is recommended. Salomon or North Face. Good grip Good ankle support and comfortable.
Parachute Regiment recruits do this in Week 8 of Basic Training with 45lbs bergan, belt order, and wpn. Average age is about 18. A 5 minute turn-around water break at Storey Arms, and then get going again back over the hill. It's a mental toughness exercise for reasonably fit people. Wear good, comfortable boots - and don't jack. Get a grip..................
I'm talking 30+ years ago. No doubt its all changed now. - probably for the better. We tab'd 14 ks/whatever ; we simply de-bussed way short of the official start point. In those days the DS had competitions going on and bets on which section would would reach Pen-y-Fan first, etc. It was a mental ftness test then for recruits, because at 17/18/19 yrs of age they were still unaware of what they coud actually do - physically. I remember as a DS going past a bunch of guys on Snr Brecon - who were sitting by the (Roman Rd) trackside watching the recruits going past and asking me what Bn they were from; the look on their faces when I explained they were just recruits on basic training doing the Fan Dance. Happy days.............

Am elite ... absolute first class endurance and fitness .. this was extreme hard . It’s not really the course that makes it extreme , but push your limit over 3-4 hrs with 20kg on your back

Richard Hunt, ironic that your friend Jason Birch failed 23 SAS Selection. His efforts to expose Jones as a Walt fell flat as all of the official Walter Mitty pages refused to take up the claim as they undertook due diligence and found such claims to be false.
