This is probably just me but I kinda like this plot a little more than the actual movie. I kinda like the idea that Flik (Red) was part of the circus all along and is a leader the gang looks up to. I also like some of these characters design and color pallets more like the grasshopper with their jock jackets and the ants looking more like actual ants yet still very stylized. The ants trained by circus members so they later fight the grasshopper as a circus is a legit funny and cute idea. The whole underdog outsider just felt too much of a cliche even at the time. Red just seemed more appealing and interesting, even his relationship with Atta could've made them a more engaging couple imo. Also the flooded climax would've been really epic to see in 1998 if it was fully animated. I know a first draft never stays the same with all of Pixars movies but I feel they were on the right track with this one.
Flik was originally a red ant named Red, who was not part of the colony but also the ringleader of the flea circus. It would have been his idea to pretend to be warriors and the team of insects would have used their circus show (instead of a bird in the final version) to defeat the Grasshoppers. It was originally rumored to be a musical (this was back when Disney felt Toy Story was a huge risk just because it didn't include characters singing).
The key difference is that originally the Flik character was part of the Flea Circus. But by making flick part of the ant colony to begin with. It makes it sure that they when they feel betrayed. It actually does feel like the colony were being betrayed.
So apparently the reason why Red was changed to Flik and made an inventor and not a ringmaster was because it was deemed unnatural for the circus troupe to suddenly have a change of heart for a bunch of manipulative bugs
That's because DreamWorks stole Pixar's idea to create their own movie Antz (1998), so Pixar added new scenes and characters for A Bug's Life (1998) like the bird for example.
