Thank God your little boy is ok. The day could have been a lot worse. Report it to the mayor, and let the hunters do their job. Otherwise, you will be overwhelmed with them.

If the koipu are allowed to breed across the water the problem will be exacerbated and at some point lot of damage will occur before you finally have to eliminate many. If you eliminate the invasive problem early it is best for the indigenous creatures and habitat.

I think if you saw 4, you probably have a lot more.. and they multiply quickly. It gets harder when there is an infestation.

i fully agree. get them sorted now Phil. Sadly this species is imported to Europe from northern America, and has almost made the beaver vulnerable in Finland for example. Don't let them become someone else's problem.

So true. I posted before how dangerous they are but just imagine a lil ol lady who doesn’t see or walk very well with 3 English mastiffs weighing almost 700 lbs fighting a herd of nutrea and frankly almost lost. Now these were city dogs lol and not used to a confrontation but nature finely kicked in and me and my shovel didn’t feel like I was the only one in that fight. Not that I wanted anything wiped off the earth but they were truly trying to hurt us so they had to be eliminated. Finally the dogs realized their job description had been upgraded from couch potatos to warriors. Then of course we all had to go to the vet just to make sure and they got antibiotics all around. The count was never confirmed as some passed on later but 14 were removed by a exterminator/ removal company.

Hi Phil. You do need to report them and get them under control because if you are going to have events as you have in the past, God forbid someone gets bitten you could lose the whole property. I'd hate to see that happening after all the work you have done. Love your channel.

@Maria CANCER It may take a while but I know that you are not the only one going through this so keep plugging away at it. My cousin is dealing with cancer now also and I'm trying to be as supportive as possible being several states away. My Moto is "life is laughing at you so I'll turn it around and laugh at it" because once you step back, most times you realize how absurd life can be.

Lose the whole property? the laws of France, and the people, are different than, say, in America - where everyone is afraid of a lawsuit.... besides, when there are a lot of people around, the coypu won't be.

In French the name is RAGONDIN; it's classified as a pest (like rats). You can set traps to get rid of them on your property; do not use poison. You need to make a declaration, inform your local city hall (french bureaucracy ;-) when you catch one.

Poor Lightning! We live on an acreage in Alberta Canada and we get our fair share of predators. What we have learned is that unless you address them right away, they can cause irreparable damage. We love wildlife, but we have live trapped and released many critters to more acceptable areas. Any that are considered harmful by our Wildlife and Conservation dept get reported so they can handle their removal appropriately. You must do whatever needs doing as well. Humane methods are available.❤️

In France, we call them - ragondins - yes they are a nuisance. We have them around our way too. The worst is in the Marais Poitevin, where they've done a lot of damage. If you ask at your mairie, they might have a solution. (my youngest son got the idea into his head that they were sort of dragon-like, so he called them - dragondins).

Sorry about the attack on Lightening and best wishes for a speedy recovery from the bit, and the visit to the vet. Many dogs would feel the vet is worse than the coypu, I hope that he is more laid back about the thought. If they are venturing where they have not been, this could suggest that pressure on social spaces and food is driving them towards you. You offer choice plants and other vegetation, perhaps you will need to increase your vigilance, perhaps even resort to traps on your side. They are a pest and a menace in many areas, though they have opened up some waterways.

In South Florida, where I live, cane toads or bufo toads were brought here in the 1930s to eat pests in the sugar cane fields. Now, we are infested with them. They have a neurotoxin on the side of their heads. When a dog tries to get at them, the neurotoxin gets in the dogs mouth, and the dog dies. Which is exactly what happened to my little dog. We have invasive species here in south Florida. Pythons, iguanas, etc. We have to watch out for alligators as well.

    • @mika72.-Bois
      @mika72.-Bois ปีที่แล้ว

Exactly the same thing happened in Australia. Some "bozo"
(ie ill-informed person or idiot) introduced cane toads here in the 1930s. Never ate the sugar cane pest. But they have reeked havoc! on the Environment. Deadly to our native animals. Released in Queensland. Are now found from northern NSW (the state of New South Wales), through Queensland, Northern Territory & northern WA
      (ie Western Australia not! Washington!😅)

I'm at least 1/4 mile from the nearest stream. I hope that Lightning will be okay. Are vet visits as expensive in France as they are here? I just took my cat in last week, as she was behaving most oddly, only to find, nearly $400 later, that she is very healthy for a 14 year old cat! Anyway, I hope all ends well.

Not sure if it will work for rodents but I think they learn very quickly. Something portable for the house side of the lower bank. Here in Australia we train live-stock by using electric fencing. A portable system is a tape system set to a preferred height. Uses minimal power (battery or mains) and where stock or animals contact it they get zapped and learn very quickly to avoid this tape whether it is on or not after a few zaps… System comes with warning signs for people.

I'm glad Lightening is going to be alright.
The nutrea are a non-native invasive species from South America. They are victims of circumstance, but they need to be eradicated. They're a nuisance here in parts of the U.S. too.
Feral pigs are another example of non-native invasive species. They can be very dangerous in addition to destructive. It's my understanding that France is also plagued by them. Like the nutrea, you can eat them... If you have a mind to. Bon appetit!

Hunting license and a Sako bolt action rifle, due to ricochets off the water best clear the bank slightly to have a clean view on land of them.

Looks almost like a beaver except the tail is long and skinny with the beavers. Tail is flat.

They may have a nest nearby that was being protected

This evasive mammal may not bother you if they are allowed to flourish however, they are taking valuable resources from native species. That is the major reason it’s best to remove them all together.

Oh my goodness poor baby. I understand live and let live but if they're bold enough to try it once they'll do it again.

Yucky little Nutria. We have them in the US and they are not supposed to be here either. Instead of beaver pelts the Nutrias were used.
There may be a nest somewhere around there. You should start setting up traps for them
