Great video!. Just came back from a 3-week trip to Japan and this video was extremely useful. We saved a quite a lot of money by using the Kansai Hiroshima Pass. At some stations, they have a special counter at ticket offices for foreigners. You can go to these counters to make any reservations. These have almost no queues. A few times, we were able to make a reservation 10-15 minutes before the departure time (free of charge).

After watching another Channel explaining that the Hokuriku Arch pass is the new best pass for every single itinerary into the Hokuriku region , I really have to commend you for answering all the important questions when it comes to these regional passes. Surprisingly far too many other channels seem to just tell everyone to buy a particular pass and not include any analysis on its cost benefit. Also showing the prices of various included routes really helps to quickly see if a pass will pay off.
Thanks for the video! Can you make another video for 5 days plan to use this hokuriku pass? I followed ur itinerary for kansai wide area pass last may and its a great help.🎉
Thanks to your videos, it helped a lot. I just want to ask what is a good pass with my itinerary below. Kyoto is my base. - Kansai >> Kyoto - Kyoto >> Nagoya >> Kyoto - Kyoto >> Hiroshima >> Kyoto - Kyoto >> Tokyo Station
If you stop off at Nagoya on the way back to Tokyo, instead of doing it after Kyoto, get the Kansai Hiroshima Pass. You can then use it for your train in from Kansai Airport, as well as your return trip to Hiroshima. Everything else use single tickets.
@@japanunravelled thanks I’m going to buy this , IOCA ic card and single ticket to Tokyo from Kyoto. We start in Osaka and then go Hiroshima , Kyoto and onto Tokyo

Thanks Andrew! I'm glad I came across this video. I'm planning a trip now and it's definitely a bit stressful weighing all options. Tokyo for 5 nights, then, Osaka for 4, Hiroshima for 1, Miyajima for 1, Kyoto for 3, and finish with Hakone for 2. Any other passes make sense for this route?
Great video ! I am starting my trip from Hiroshima airport and planning to spend 2 days there exploring Hiroshima & Miyajima and then activate the 5 day Kansai - Hiroshima pass to explore Amanahashidate , Himeji, Tattori and back to Osaka on 5th day, from osaka i can use local trains to explore Kyoto & Nara, can i get the 5 day tickets from Hiroshima airport and activate it after 2 days ? Also can i get physical sim cards in Hiroshima airport, as my phones doeant support e-sim ecosystem.
Ooh that's an interesting itinerary! Hiroshima airport isn't hooked up to the railway so you'll need to take a limousine bus. You can deal with your pass in Hiroshima station. Not sure if they have sim cards at the airport. Some of the online options can deliver to your accommodation and other places. Worth checking.
Hi Andrew, awesome video and very informative. My question is, when we picked up the pass, will it start straight away? Asking as I'm planning not to use the pass straight away. May be 1 or 2 days after the issue day.

If we were to ride one of the first two trains out of Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima in your opinion non-reserved seats would be just fine for my GF and I? We wanted to reserve cause want to seat together for that trip through the official link but we dont understand how to fill out what they are asking and just might go with your klook affiliate link. were planning to be there till around 6PM and head back to Osaka after for the night time. lastly can i pick up my pass earlier or do i need to pick up the day i want to use it? Any tips would be greatly appreciated and thank you for all you do for us travelers!
Yeah, if you're starting to use the pass on the 22nd it's no problem to go down to Nara first. However it's relatively cheap that journey so I'd say not the most brilliant use of one day. I mean, you could head up to Tottori for the day. Anyway, if you're taking the first shinkansen down generally you can get away with using non-reserved. People wait outside the ticket gates though before opening time, so it can be a bit of a dash to get to the platform, since many people use this strategy. When you pick up your pass you can set it to begin a day in the future when you first plan to use it. And once you have the pass you can go ahead and reserve seats. Try and ride the Sakura Shinkansen at least once. Hope that helps!

No, you can order it online and then go to the ticket machine / office to pick up. It takes a bit of time for them to process though, say a day or two. But you can also buy at some ticket offices: www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/receive/?railpass=3&counter=1

Hi Andrew I plan to use this pass from Osaka to Hiroshima and various stops before stopping at Kyoto. Any idea which pass or route to take to go to kusatsu onsen. I plan to use the Tokyo wide pass to go to kusatsu onsen. Is it the only way using a Shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo then purchase the pass and activate, head to the onsen? I wanna take the earliest train. I saw some ppl taking from ueno and shinjuku station to kusatsu onsen. All under 2 to 2and a half.
Yeah, pretty much buy a separate ticket from Kyoto to Tokyo. The Tokyo Wide Pass might be a good option if you want to do any more daytrips from Tokyo as well as Kusatsu Onsen. Check my previous videos for videos on Tokyo Wide Pass and Kusatsu Onsen. Yes, there's also a bus from Shinjuku - really all depends on where you staying to be honest.
I’m staying in Shinjuku area in Tokyo. I was checking if I depart from kusatsu onsen using the Tokyo wide pass for my last day any idea where I can do stops or day trip before heading back to Tokyo? I previously wanted to head to Mount Fuji area to see the five lakes or yamanashi but it seems too far and I won’t be able to spend any time and have to get back to Tokyo. So maybe have to do Mount Fuji another day trip but not with the Tokyo wide pass.
You'd be better off planning to do something mid-afternoon in Tokyo. Kusatsu Onsen is relatively far away. Once you factor in the travel back to Tokyo, doing something on the way is going to be extremely rushed, and there aren't notable places on the way I can really recommend.
We would be using this pass over New Years, and it sounds like we would be getting reserved seats, which we want anyways since we want to sit together and be sure we get on the train we want. In the video, you say to buy the pass through the JRWest website but then pick up the physical ticket in person at the ticket booth or ticket office. And you can get unlimited reserved seats. I'm confused about the "first 6 seat reservation" rule. There will be 5 of us so does that count as the first 5? Or is it the first trip counts as one? And is this rule only for where you pick up the tickets not how you make your reserved seat? Thanks!!
Such an informative video, thanks! If I purchase the pass from Klook and exchange for a physical pass in the designated machines in Kyoto, is it a simple tap and go across the route map under this pass (whether it is unreserved local trains or the shinkansen)? Hope we don’t have to queue up for something or print any more tickets as long as we are following the covered route map in those 5 days.
Hi! Just one thing that I don't understand. Can I go from Kyoto to Nara with the JR Kansai Hiroshima Pass, too? Because from the map I found in some websites it seems that, but I'm not sure. Thank you in advance :)
If I buy the pass from klook when the actual timing (5 days) starts counting ? How long before my trip can I purchase the pass ?.... And last question if I start the 5 days let's say on a Monday at 8 am will it end on Friday 8 am or midnight? Many thanks for your help
When you pick up the pass you can choose a date up to 30 days in the future when it will begin. I don't remember how far in advance you can buy. But anyway, the pass runs midnight to midnight, so you start using at 11am on Monday, on Friday night will finish at midnight, not Saturday at 11am. Hope that helps!
Good day! Just to clarify if we ride from Kyoto to Hiroshima (direct) while using the JR Hiroshima pass how can we settle/ pay the kyoto-osaka sector of the train ride? Thanks in advance.
Hi, I am planing to have this itinerary: Osaka -> Kobe -> Himeji -> Hiroshima -> Okayama -> Osaka. This itinerary fits in the 5 days window. Do you know if I can use this pass for all this locations ?
Hello, please help me. God willing, i will be visiting japan in oct. for 2 weeks, starting and ending in tokyo, and staying in sapporo and kyoto in between. and planning day trips to hiroshima, nara, nikko, china town and korea town. what pass is best for 7 days only please
A 7 day national pass would probably not pay off - unless you can concentrate all those long distance trips into 7 days in the middle of your trip. Look into the JR East South Hokkaido Pass instead and perhaps doing the rest with separate tickets.
Hi im italian so sorry for my english... i want to buy this pass , can i go to himeji from osaka and then from himeji to hiroshima with the tokkaido shinkansen for free with this pass? And then from hiroshima go back to osaka? Thanks
I'm going from Tokyo 3 days -> Hiroshima 3 days -> Osaka 4 days -> Kyoto 5 days. First timer in Japan. Would you split the Tokyo-Hiroshima leg somewhere to use this pass, or is that too much hassle? Thanks!
@@japanunravelled You're so fast! Thanks. That link takes me to "You can't pick up the pass in Tokyo". I realize I can't pick it up, or use it, from Tokyo. But should I pay for Tokyo-Kobe (or another city) separately, then use the pass from Kobe to Hiroshima to Osaka? (I can try to figure out the cost difference, but I guess I'm wondering how much of a hassle that would be in your opinion, or if you think there's a cool spot better than Kobe to make this switch and take a look around? )
Ah, I get what you mean now. Really depends on what you like. I would just go to Shin-Osaka, pick up the pass, and then you can stop off anywhere along the way if you have time. Onomichi is very chilled out, and Okayama has a great garden. Kobe is very close to Osaka, so easy to stop there too if you like.
@@japanunravelled It looks like this pass does not save costs for my trip, even though I'm going down to Hiroshima and back up to Osaka. I really thought it would, so I'm worried I didn't calculate something right. This is my first time to Japan. If you have a second, can you take a look below to see if I am missing something? Option 1: No pass, Shimbashi Station Tokyo to Hiroshima ¥19,560 ; Hiroshima to Osaka ¥10,750 = ¥30,310 Option 2: Get this Kansai Hiroshima Pass ¥17,000 ; take separate shinkansen Shimbashi Station Tokyo to Osaka ¥14,520 = ¥31,520 (The JR ferry to Miyajima and local transit in Hiroshima and Osaka come with the pass right? I'm guessing they would be a minor cost, but I don't really know.)
Hi I'm staying in osaka (next to shin osaka station) for 6 days with planning to do day trips to Hiroshima, Kobe and Himeji which from the sounds of it this pass would work great. I was planning on going to Kyoto for two seperate day trips from Shin osaka. Since this pass won't cover that what would be the best and fastest route for the osaka > kyoto and back? And what sort of price would i be looking at for a return ticket? rather than buying tickets should i just use my IC card? thanks!
The difference in travel time between the Rapid (Tokaido Sanyo), Express (Haruka) and Tokaido Shinkansen is negligible and you probably lose out waiting around for the Haruka or Shinkansen just because the Sanyo runs so much more often. Also if you want to save your pass days since Kyoto deserves more than a day trip for most - Tokaido Sanyo is the cheapest option of the three by a good amount. The pass doesn't work for buses in Kyoto and that is the main form of transport there. Or at least it was when I last visited which is closing in on a decade ago....now I'm sad lol.
Yes, the Special Rapid between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka runs every 15 mins for most of the day. However, if one is leaving soon, the Haruka is preferable as you're much, much more likely to get a seat, and a much much nicer seat it is. All depends on when you're travelling!
OK, so possibly stupid question, but; the pass doesn't cover the Kyoto-Hiroshima route (directly), but does it cover all destinations in between? For ex. Kyoto - Himeji?
Is it mandatory to have a reserved seat to ride the sanyo shinkansen ? Shin Osaka - Hiroshima ? Or can I ride it just with the kansai Hiroshima area pass ?
You can ride without a seat reservation by using the non-reserved car. But note that Nozomi trains become temporarily fully reserved during the New Year, Golden Week and Obon holidays.
@@japanunravelled thank you I'm planning to take it in 2 days I already have the kansai Hiroshima area pass.. can I just board with this pass? or still need a non reserved ticket to ride the shinkansen?
@@japanunravelledthank you! I'm currently in Kyoto ... Would it be possible to go to Nara with this ticket as well ? When I search in Google maps the JR symbol is not showing in the options to go there so im a bit confused how to get from Kyoto to Nara with this pass (if possible)
Totally doable. Get along to platform 8/9/10 in Kyoto station and you'll find lots of JR trains going there. Trains at 7 or 37 mins past the hour are rapid trains, with fewer stops and quicker. Get one of those and avoid the hordes going to Fushimi Inari.
I know you answered this already but im still confused on how to actually do it... How can you go to hiroshima if you are staying in kyoto and not osaka ? I mean by using this pass no additional cost

Yes!
@@japanunravelled thanks! does it cover the Shin Osaka -> Osaka route tho?
@@WhyShouldnt_I Yes!
does that mean i can't use it for a round trip from kyoto to nara? i'm not sure I understood this part..
Yes, you can go to Nara with this pass.
@@japanunravelled From Kyoto, correct?
With just the pass is fine!
You take any train that isn't a shinkansen to Shin-Osaka.
Google Maps- Route from Kyoto Station to Shin-Osaka station and pick any line that is not the Tokaido Shinkansen.
@@japanunravelled thank you!
@@Komainu959 thank you!
Actually, I think the pass does cover 3 bus routes that are useful in Hiroshima.
Thanks, forgot to add that!
