I agree. Blasters from Star Wars don't really sound explosive enough. They are supposed to be shooting out bolts of intensely hot gas, not unlike a lightning bolt. If you've ever been close to a lightning strike you'd know how intense it is.

Although since the damage from plasma would be mostly thermal, a smaller caliber would mean the that the plasma bolt would be denser and hotter. I think that humanity had the right idea with going with smaller weapons.
Gary Rydstrom is a sound design God. He rightfully deserved both Oscars for sound mixing and sound editing for this movie. Though I definitely loved his work in Backdraft.

Yeah i have that one, i also got one that replaces the laser beams with laser bolts, a quick edit and I made them purple, essentially turning every laser weapon in Fallout 4 into a phaser plasma rifle.
If I knew how to edit videos, I would replace ED-209's 50 caliber machine guns with plasma cannons using the same sound from Terminator 2, the sounds from the beginning to the middle of this video. And the plasma bolts would be pink or purple whatever color they are. I would also add violent sparks to the victim being shot by the ED-209.
In case somebody makes it, I forgot to mention that the plasma bolts would be fired at the same rate per second as the 50 caliber bullets were. And the repeated plasma burns will turn Mr. Kinney into charred bones.

Projecting weak plasma bolts short distances is already possible to do, and has been for a long time, so it's inevitable that the technology will keep getting refined. If by "work," you mean actually being practical for combat, then I don't know.; that depends on if they advance enough to become an improvement over ballistic firearms. 2: No, it would not be considered a laser, because plasma is not a laser. Lasers are made of light, plasma is made of plasma. This question doesn't even make sense.

Slightly pitched versions of these were also used in Transformers and G.I.JOE.
So it must mean that the higher pitched ones were used for optimus prime's ion blaster.
I think they used these effects in Bumblebee, during the intro on Cybertron. I lost my shit when I realized that.
