I'm from Port Chester and I still have the "Centennial book" from 1968. The "birds-eye" map from 1882 is featured in the book. I also attended Our Lady of Mercy Church & school. I grew up on Perry Ave and used to play at memorial park. IMHO: The recent legacy of of Port Chester has more to do with it being the "go-to center" of vice & debauchery for the surrounding population during the 1960's and early 70's. It all started during prohibition. Eventually it became mostly an Itialian-Catholic neighborhood. When I was young boy growing up in PC, I thought that "bookmaking" was la legal profession since many "grown-up"s were called "bookies". The biggest "boom" for PC occurred when NY state lowered its drinking age to 18. At that point many "college kids" from CT used to come down to PC on Fri & Sat nights for libations. At this point PC was entrenched with both Jewish and Itialian organized crime influences. By 1967 it had earned the nickname of "sin-city". It's reputation was the topic of a very biased photo-doc for "Look magazine", much to chagrin of it's residences. The article was a futile attempt by the Luce family to blame "Port Chester" (and it's criminal element ) for the deviant behavior of the "Ivy League" students since there were many fatal DUI crashes involving intoxicated college students driving from Port Chester back to CT. But that would all be eclipsed when the Capitol Theater re-opened for Rock&Roll concerts in 1970. The good news was..it put Port Chester back on the map. Many of those concerts were legendary even if the $$ used to re-open the theater came from questionable sources. I attended many of those concerts including the last show (Chick Corea) in 1973. Once the all the "Goodfella's" were rounded up in NY in the early 80's the internal "Italian American-social structure" of Port Chester started to crumble and "Latin" gangs began to occupy and rule the area around Broad St and the downtown area. Most of the original Italian families moved to CT to escape the crime, open drug use and high taxes. I left in 83 and never looked back. Since the Capitol Theater re-opened in 2010 the surrounding area is safer but all the original "watering holes" are gone. The pinnacle of entertainment and debauchery probably occurred around '71 when you had the Capitol concerts and the surrounding bars and Taverns were in "full swing". A good time was had by all...😊

My mother's house on 85 Elmont was an old, 3 story Victorian. It was also haunted. I never got any sleep.
My mom, Edna, owned the Texas.
