GREAT video, Jim! WONDERFUL tips! I bring my tropical gardenias and citrus inside when I bring in my tropical hibiscus. I bring them into an unheated garage for at least a week first and then into a cool room in the house and loose very few leaves that way. I also begin withholding water from my amaryllis on Sept 1st to start putting them into dormancy for winter and I move them into the garage on Oct 1st. I may try to winter over my heliotrope this year, though I never have in the past....

Perfect timing. I just bought several pink Muhly grasses. I am in zone 7a and based on your experience I will keep them in their pots. My clay soil will probably not be good for them in the winter. I also think I know why I lost the other pink Muhly grasses I planted a few years ago around the same time.

Hi Jim, I loved this video. I always get a little annoyed with plants that are considered "hardy" in Melbourne Australia because they're often natives which, aren't always pleasing to me but, it's true what you're saying about planting more hardy plants. It helps with structure in winter and throughout the year. I'm learning so much from you. Thank you.

I bury containers in the ground sometimes which keeps them warmer. I then pull them back out when the weather warms up and as a bonus I have a big hole ready for planting something. This works especially well if you have a problem with squirrels digging up tulips. They don't mess with buried containers for some reason.
I also want to mention that I've lost many stored tubers to some kind of nematode or tiny insect problem so I highly suggest treating with a fungicide/insecticide powder before storing for the winter.

I normally transplant in the fall before a frost. The plant will continue to put down roots if the temperature is above 40 degrees.
In spring you will have a shrub that's well established.

Here in Michigan, I wait for a hard freeze to kill back the dahlias, then wait about two weeks for the juices to flow back into the tubers before we dig them. I think it’s best to keep then in the ground as long as we can, we have long winters and the tubers can dry out pretty fast. Last year I split them in the fall and wrapped each tuber in shrink wrap, only lost three tubers over the winter! Lots of good information!

I love the color in this video (I haven't watched your other ones yet except a really old one). I like how quickly you get to the point. I have a question. I'm in 7b west texas-hot and dry. I relocated an indigo blue salvia (supposedly a native) from a shady area to a sunny spot this spring. Maybe not the smartest but oh well. I've had to water it every day this summer bc the leaves always wilted (we had many days > 100). Do you think it'll naturalize itself next year or is there something I should do to prepare it better for next year?

This is because the hostas have sunk below the ground level and now exist in a 'basin'. My question: should I wait until after the first frost? Do you get snow where you are? I'm supposed to be in Zone 7a and it doesn't look as lush and tropical like the trees in the background.

E Johnson I also live in zone 7B, about twenty miles from Raleigh where Jim lives. We get very little snow. Once in a while we will get a couple inches at most but usually just a dusting here and there.

Southerncharmed 411 - Thank you! I guess most of the things that grow in Jim's zone can grow in my zone with the exception of a few things here and there. Thanks!

Hi Jim, enjoy your videos. There is a plant behind you with bright red flowers. Would you tell me the name? Love the color. Thank you.

When daylilies like stella d'oro are starting to yellow, do you cut them back or leave them through the winter?

Hi Jim, do you use or recommend preen under mulch to control weeds? I have an area where I can't seem to control the weeds. Any suggestions?

I want to pick up some frost cloth but I noticed they come in different weights. Some look like tissue paper. Do you recommend a certain weight for frost protection in 7b?

Hey Jim! We are having some landscape work in our backyard, we’ve put 4 Green Giants, a Redbud, some Otto Luykens and various other perennials. Question: Do I fertilize this late in the season?
    Thanks so much

Hi, great informational video. My neighbors huge tree which looks over my yard is shedding diseased leaves all over my yard since july. Those leaves keep getting burried in my yard. My plum and pear tree already got disease and shed leaves already. Under those trees and my yard has many perennial garden plants. What should i do?

Good news is that most disease problems are species specific so it is unlikely to pass to your stuff unless you have the same thing. It is annoying though.

Do you know for sure it is a disease that it’s spreading? Could it be pests ? My very large mature trees are spreading spider mites on my other plantings below ! The mites are hard to see. I use a magnifying glass and look under the leaves to identify them. It’s been a heart breaking battle for me as a fairly new gardener. If it’s not one pest it’s another ! But good luck to you in finding the problem so you know how to solve it. Pardon me Mr. Putnam for jumping in, I just felt their pain 😫
