SFTB changed my life. best personal favorite

Soundtracks For The Blind is probably my favorite for the fact that it's one of the most unique albums I've ever heard. Whether it's the more ambient tracks, or those monolithic 10+ minute songs, or even the super experimental pieces, there's a lot of interesting things there. It just feels cinematic, I guess. Then again, I have to agree that it's an exhausting album, but I gotta say it's still an amazing work of art.
If we're including live albums in the conversation however, the Swans Are Dead album is utterly fantastic. It's a lot like Soundtracks, but without as many ambient soundscapes. All the other albums covered here are also good though, espedially Children Of God and The Great Anihilator.

You guys are awesome. This is the best music channel on TH-cam. Obviously BHS introduced me to the channel and everything else made me a subscriber. The Melvins episodes with your brother are god level. I saw the Swans once live and it was quite the experience. Neurosis episode please 🙏🏼

You're too kind, thank you. Neurosis is one we will do with as much care as Swans and Melvins, for sure.

Also, love you guys reading the Gira/ Jarboe conversation. Gotta say Alex does a pretty spot on Jarboe drawl 👌

Maybe you guys know this and just didn’t mention it, but the version of All Lined Up on Swans are Dead has the heavier bit featured a lot more and the vocals are a lot clearer and more impassioned. Check it out if you haven’t!

You guys should definitely check out live performances during 1988. It was like heavier, early versions of The Burning World material.

Will definitely do that, that sounds incredible.

Norman Westberg opened for Swans this past tour, in Dallas, Gira’s first words to the crowd were “the beautiful and petite, Norman Westberg” in a funny accent. Best show ever.

I did not predict those picks! Very interesting.
Personal favourite: White Light. First Swans album I ever owned and it's remained one of my favourite albums for 20+ years. So many life events are melded together with that album.
Best: Children of God. I think this is their masterpiece, though at first I found it too depressing and dreary to love. Every track is so rich and unique in textures and probably the last really cohesive band album up to the 90s breakup.
Worst: Burning World. I fall into the camp who think that Bill Laswell took the soul out of Swans on this. I still enjoy listening to it and it's a very elegantly constructed album, but it sounds neutered. When you listen to live performances of these songs from that time, you can hear the missing band energy of the studio versions.
Least Favourite: Soundtracks... I'm very happy this album exists. It's a fascinating collage of ideas and I'd even call it great, but to listen to from start to finish is a slog for me. I understand why some people love it though.

Knowing how much you love this era of the band, this is super cool to learn. I totally see the argument for all of these.

The concert where the sound was plugged was at the Town and Country club in London I think, Bjork with the Sugarcubes opened for them and after she finished most people fled. There's a recording of that show and you can hear Gira scream "Kill, Kill, Kill" over and over again.
By the way you should do Tuxedomoon. Very interesting band with a similar story of hardships

The SFTB "slander" has me screaming at the screen
It's all reasonable but I'm still butthurt lmao
I like your point about infinity riffs, one of my favorite artists, Prurient, talks about a smiliar concept where they specifically try to create like cyclical melodies that can potentially go on forever
If you haven't done it, Prurient discography woud be amazing but probably like, literally impossible

Yeah I thought so too, I don’t get how you would put their most bland (not bad still) album over this one, love of life is not better than sftb lol

Like you could easily apply the “boring” sander to cop or greed even.

I know this is not the official suggestion box for the show, but would a Killing Joke three parter be possible, in honor of Geordie (may he Rest In Power)?
Also, I share the Swans episode with people who are uninitiated to the band a lot

Children of god is completely amazing , yes even real love , which I think gets away with it because of context and the sheer sound of it

Soundtracks as worst, least favorite? Absolute madness. It isn't an album - it is an experience. A stunning adieu, a burial, to an already dead (at the time) band.

Should have known Bill Laswell was involved with The Burning World; love the guy but he seems to fuck up almost everything he produced.

Y’all need an old guy who was there when this all happened to consult. You do a good job for some after-the-fact millennial shit, but you get details wrong. For instance, it’s ‘Juh-RAH,’ not ‘JEER-uh.’ But I still really like what you do, it’s just annoying for us 40 and 50-somethings who grew up on all this as it was happening.
Also, I wanted to add in reference to your Big Black episode: ‘Lungs’ is the ‘With Sympathy’ of the Big Black catalog. Al Jourgensen absolutely despises his first album, but you can often find it listed as a top fan pick. Same with Albini and Lungs. He hates it and thinks it’s embarrassing. But I think Lungs and Atomizer are a tie for best. Old heads love the stripped down stuff. The more rudimentary, the better sometimes.

@@koollegged5739 Yeah, but Gira himself says juh-RAH, so I’m thinking he probably knows.
