Soweit ich weiß sind S-Bahnen einfach breiter und bieten daher mehr Platz und haben glaub ich auch eine deutlich höhere Höchstgeschwindigkeit. S-Bahnen sind ja letztlich "normale Züge", zumindest außerhalb von Berlin. Andere Städte verwenden ja keine Stromschienen sondern die normalen Oberleitungen für ihre S-Bahnen. Sogar innerhalb der Berliner U-Bahn gibt es dann übrigens auch noch unterschiedliche Breiten. Großprofil und Kleinprofil, soweit ich weiß die ältesten Teile der U-Bahn Kleinprofil, ab den 1920ern gebaute Strecken dann nur noch Großprofil. Also sind nichtmal bei der U-Bahn die Züge die gleiche Größe und die beiden Profile haben komplett unabhängige Netze und sogar andere Arten der Stromabnahme usw., sind also komplett inkompatibel.
