I was very disconnected with my mother especially when I was starting out in college, I was going through a really painful time in my life and when I saw this scene it finally gave me the relief and comfort I needed, I cried so much that day… 8 years later and I think I’m at a place that my younger self never thought possible and it turned out to be true, life is good even at it’s worst.

Every child needs to hear a pep talk like the one Sam gave Max. I graduated high school in 1980. I remember looking around the auditorium at all my classmates thinking, "They all know what they want to do with their lives--what they're going to study in college. Why can't I figure out what I want to be? Why don't I have it together?" I wish my mom had given me this kind of a talk. Her advice was, "Whatever you study, make sure it's in a field where you can make a lot of money, so you don't end up like me."

My Dad came from a poor background and had to work his way up to get a nice house, his own business, and enough money to do well by the family. He didn't say not to end up like him, but he did tell me to pick a field where I'd me safe and secure financially. That's what ended up happening, and I do like what I do, but I didn't take the plunge and do something that I truly love.
It's clear that when I told him that I fancied a career in Writing or something in Television, he had immediately dismissed it because it wasn't secure; he didn't want me to fail. Perhaps if he had given me reassurance like how Pamela Aldon does here, then I might have gone a different path, but that's how he knew how to do things.
All we wanted was for me to be alright. Maybe your Mother was thinking the same thing.

I love shows about comedians because they're not even big celebrities (no offense), but they're all going through existential crises. Maybe it's because they're human. There's comfort in that for people like us - the non-celebs

I believe we make plans and then life happens and our expectations are compromised. That leads to disappointment and negative energy.
It's important to know we are all trying to survive and we are all made of the same molecular structure...we all need air to breathe and water to survive. That's it...we come into this world with nothing but let's hope that when we leave this physical plane to whatever one believes is that you need your best and were kind and compassionate to others. In every possible way you can no matter the odds you find yourself up against.

I was always surprised with how so many random British, TV sitcoms actors appeared in this show. Such as Lucy Davis, Kris Marshall, Marsha Thomason, Nigel Havers-all playing delightful quirky characters. Very bizarre🥰

I can't help but think this pays lip-service to the existential angst of young people - that was thrust upon them by generations of neo-liberal capitalism and boomer neglect of everything except bank accounts - but offers no real material solutions or rocks the boat of the capitalistic status-quo which is at the root frankly, of every problem we have.
It's also framed as a young girl in the bosom of a middle-class family with what, dinner party chats and open dialogue with eachohter? Like, who does that in real life? Who has that luxury? Honestly, 90% of people can't or won't have moments like these because they're too damn tired or poor or undereducated to spend 2 seconds contemplating their lives with reference to anything but basic survival. And that's by design, actually: keep people poor, tired and barely surviving, and they won't be strong enough to change the system.
TV shows that attempt this kind of rhetoric are just painkillers, not a cure. Good acting and drama can speak to issues but words are wasted when there is so much that needs to be done!

I'd call it extreme neo-liberal feminism myself. Pushing women who clearly are not suited it, to waste their lives for corporations or for useless degrees. They've convinced women that there's something wrong with them if they'd rather find purpose in prioritizing family. It's not really capitalism since this is push in all levels of government including global institutions like the World economic forum.

    • @satyasyasatyasya5746

@@crown9413 Its commodified first wave feminism (maybe second) in which due to the supression of men's wages in the late 70s, women were forced into the workforce to supplement incomes to keep families heads above water. Its also no accident and very telling that at that time, social issues became fixated with gender and race, rather than what was really going on: class.
Then, women were told basically to act like men (or the caricature of malesness that men had contructed hysterically among themselves) to keep up in business, which amounted to what was essentially some kind of gaslighting: patronise and objectify women negatively on their 'femaleness'/beauty but also belittle them for caring about it. But thats the standards they were being held to! It was a cluster-f**k.
On your point of "oh they lash out women who want to stay home!" point, this is largely a regressive talking point by insidious wings of the rising fascism we have today. It is twisting the virtue of freedom of choice, to claim that women (or people in general) should be free to choose their own subjugation. Yes, maybe if you're lucky, a man can support a family and the woman can stay home if she wants to, but this is very much an exception that proves the rule. And men should be able to stay home too if the woman can provide - but there's the issue: its about money and power, not freedom. And I don't think its healthy to freely surrender social power that women have died for, for whatever reason, in the full knowledge that economic patriarchy won't give it back without fighting all over again.
That is not to say that everyone should be working at all times - thats not equality - but that "mixed workforces vs. women chained to kitchen sinks" is a flase choice and framing used often by the aforementioned cultural regressives. But this gets into a lot of economics and history and stuff which I don't have the fingers to type about right now haha

@@satyasyasatyasya5746 WOW! Where can we buy those semi rose colored glasses that are tuned to see the world as you do? You have your perspective and you state it very eloquently and it is a valid perspective. My perspective coming from someone who recently attained the adjective of "Wise" to my list, meaning I am getting older, is that in the last scene life was wrapped up nicely. No matter how one presents themselves they all have their own shit that they are dealing with each day. Since I am not a feminist or neo-liberal nor do I think it is playing to existential angst of young people. There is not a soul walking this earth that does not have their own issues walking besides them each and everyday. So if it is basic survival to some higher lifestyle beyond my imagination each of us has got shit to deal with and while someone else's shit might not be existential it is still shit and they gotta deal. PS - Who does this... contemplating life..... TONS of people. I suggest you start and maybe you can start by helping people that are poor and tired. There are a lot of places to volunteer.
