Funny enough for a lot of people that live that far in eastern Canada if they want to see a concert, the flights are cheaper to London or Dublin than they were to Toronto or Montreal. Not sure if that’s still the same.
I just paid $750 for a first, one way flight on the east coast of the US …. It’s a demand issue. If you catch a flight they’ve just put on a route you’ll get great prices until it starts to fill up.
Canada is a bit famous among developed countries for having poor internal trade between its own internal subdivisions. It's easier to trade with the US or UK / IE / coastal EU in many cases than with the other provinces.
Your post made me think of something. I am a therapist and I belong to the Canadian Counseling psychotherapy association because it's amazing. I was at my very first CCPA conference in New Brunswick a few years ago and everybody knew I was American. When I sat down at the table, somebody from Alberta said, "now we're going to be sitting here with people from Newfoundland. Don't call them newfies, whatever you do. They are newfoundlanders!" 😊
I have just returned from a P&O cruise on Aurora just over a week ago and our stop in St.Johns staying overnight visited one of the pubs and what a lovely friendly people you are❤
@pinkmagiclala I'm taking a trip up to Quebec as well as Newfoundland.. Any points of interest you can direct me to in Newfoundland? I want to see some cliffs. The landscape looks incredible. Also I scrolled one of your playlists and seen some keeping up appearances vids.. that's one of my all time favorite shows. Good taste.
Scottish TH-camr Steve Marsh recently did several videos of this flight and visits to the Gander airport museum (of 9/11 fame) and St. John's. He found the people there to be super friendly, giving lots of help and free rides.
Flew Newark to Dublin last year… flight time was 4.5 hours! We arrived almost 2 hours early cause of the tail wind… fastest Europe flight I have ever been on.
I have just returned from a P&O cruise on the Aurora and our 1st port of call was St.Johns after 4 days from Southampton. The entry into St Johns by ship is very narrow and visited on a tourSignal hill which was in mist and onto Cape Spear where the mist cleared.
Years ago when I was 18 I flew to North America for the first time from Prestwick to Halifax, but the plane stopped at Gander - and I think that would have been even shorter. I fell in love with long distance travel that day. Thanks again for your consistently interesting and amusing work.
My first ever flight (in March 1983, when I was 12 years old) was Gatwick to Newark via Gander, where we stopped to refuel the plane. I think it's fair to say that there's not a lot going on in Gander!
Cool video! I did a UK/Ireland vacation this past summer flying YHZ-LGW and DUB-YHZ on WestJet. A bit longer than this flight but still if you blink you’ll miss that you’ve crossed the pond. A nice perk of living on the East Coast! Hopefully on a future trip you’ll have the opportunity to spend some time in Newfoundland. It’s beautiful and the people are among the friendliest in the world. I feel like it’s the closest you can come to visiting Ireland without leaving North America.
Great to see that familiar approach to my home airport coming from the east. Pro tip - the left side of the aircraft has an even better view IMO. Hope you enjoyed your pass through Newfoundland.
Love Sunday videos especially when they feature St John’s NL, my favorite city. Newfoundlanders are friendly, very welcoming and the island is beautiful. Enjoy what time you have there!
Key distinction: It's "St John's", not Saint John's. There's another city in Eastern Canada, Saint John (where I'm from) in New Brunswick that's often confused with St. John's. The difference is the New Brunswick city spells out the "Saint" word and the Newfoundland city has the apostrophe and 's' at the end of "John." Unfortunately these two cities are often confused so some people think I'm from Newfoundland when I'm not and people from Newfoundland are sometimes mistaken to be from New Brunswick!

I'm living in St. John's and taking this flight in a couple of days so it was great to see this video and know what to expect! This route was in operation for 2016 and 2017 but was cancelled for 2018. I think it's now back on a 3-year seasonal schedule. A bit controversial for some as it was put back on after taxpayer dollars were given to the airport to entice operators and new flights but I'm glad it's here and going to take advantage. Hope your next flight video is somewhere up to Labrador!
i flew gatwick to halifax in premium this august and it’s very interesting to see that nothing at all has changed in terms of food service and the amenity kit since this video came out (3 years before i flew there)!
You should try to fly to Gander in Newfoundland. It's where the air traffic control for the western havl of the transatlantic route is located! Cool old school airport with 1950s vibes
Great video, Noel. I only live about 5 miles from Gatwick and always get a bit excited when someone videos it! Hope you enjoyed your time in Newfoundland - that’s a place I’d love to visit!
Trans-Atlantic flights are generally quicker heading the other way, flying east with the winds. We did Halifax to Dublin on ASL some years ago, and it was 4 hours and some minutes going east. But the Return leg, west into the wind, was 5 hours and some minutes. These flight durations are conveniently short and very easy flights. Incredible to skip the horrible backtrack to Toronto or Montreal, just incredible.
Noticed a couple of Transat planes at Gatwick. We've flown Manchester to Canada (Toronto) on Transat a couple of times - it's a real no-frills experience with really tight legroom. You wouldn't want a much longer trip! Glad you got more legroom.
Yes, I flew same plane, from Dublin to Toronto, its a tiny plane, hop across the Atlantic from this region is short, couple of hours, but good portion of last couple of hours of flight is flying over NL, Quebec, bit of Onatrio, to finally reach Toronto, Canada is so big. I love it, and i love the westjet dreamliner (used it couple of times flying back to dublin from calgary)
I remember connecting via deer lake coming back from the UK one winter when I was 14. Smallest boarder crossing I’ve seen since lol. I would love to go back and visit.

Brilliant video as always!! Only a summer seasonal service with Westjet. Think air canada served Heathrow ffom St John's up until 2020 if i can remember. Hope all is well, take care
I was always curious about the Westjet short flights to St. Johns. A few years ago while in Dublin, I noticed a Westjet 737-700 in one of the gates and was surprised to see a -700 being used for Trans-Atlantic flight. Thanks for sharing.
YYT is getting flights to Paris now. This part of the country deserve direct access to europe without having to backtrack to Toronto, which is a 2.5h flight westbound.
There is a seasonal service from Dublin to St Johns flight that you will find is even shorter. though west jet shows them both as just over 5h on their web site.

There's a transatlantic flight from Basel (Switzerland) to Montreal with the Airbus321LR operated by Air Transat, flight time 8h. I was picking up my mom from the airport in Basel and was so surprised that there was a transatlantic flight from there. Normally you would only find flights within Europe. WestJet used operate a B737-700 on the YYT - DUB route. That service was suspended because of 'Covid', and when it returned, it was rerouted as a B737-MAX service between YHZ and DUB. From recollection [ I did fly this route ], the YYT - DUB sector [ tailwind-assisted ] was under 4hrs in duration.

In 2008 i took a flight from Gatwick to Halifax, Nova Scotia. at that point the shortest transatlantic flight. with 'Canadian Affair' a low cost carrier using thomas cook and condor planes when required. the flight was 4hrs30m...and a lovely british couple in my row drove me in to central halifax to save me the hassle of taking the bus.
The mac master sent me, even though I've been watching you for about 2 years. Amazing vlogs I do look forward to a video every Sunday. Ps. The amenity kits like headphones and blankets, do you get to keep them on long haul flights?
Interesting comments about Priority Pass ...I'm a member via Amex but find admissions at the UK airport lounges are a nightmare..last time I was at Gatwick I couldn't get into any Lounges and BHX is just as bad...
That sensation you described at the end, like it seemed you left Gatwick five minutes ago, I felt it in a different way back in 2010, when travelling by car from Lisbon to Madrid. When left the park where I parked the car and saw by the first time in my life the gardens of the Royal Palace it seemed to me that I had just left my house half an hour ago to visit downtown Lisbon. Like the place looked familiar... 🤔
Fantastic! I found the WestJet crew brilliant. Such a cool flight to the friendliest island in the world!

Thank you for doing this- I've thought of flying back to Canada in May from the Chelsea Flower Show with this stop , then onto Halifax to catch up with some old friends I haven't seen in several years. Take the Train to Montreal as well- beats going over the pole- Here's a quirky flight idea- For us out of Penticton to fly on Westjet to Vancouver we fly twice over the Rocky mountains ! I'm doing the trip shortly for $100 CDN on sale. Cheers Gerry
Been to Gatwick plenty of times, and honestly can’t say I’ve ever seen West Jet parked at a gate
Westjet used to operate Dublin to St. John's
Gander next? Hope you enjoyed Newfoundland and Labrador! 😃
13:57 "i am so excited to see what it's like down there" that's what she said-
5:08 interesting to see that Wizz Air plane in this video after I just watched Mentour Pilot's new episode on the Wizz Air incident!
Same here!
I get why you have to seek out Superdry. None in Texas and the nearest one is in Orlando, FL.
You get to keep the amenity kits & pajamas, but not the headphones & blankets.
They used to do Dublin to St. John's, it used to be the shortest
Interesting comments about Priority Pass ...I'm a member via Amex but find admissions at the UK airport lounges are a nightmare..last time I was at Gatwick I couldn't get into any Lounges and BHX is just as bad...
That was really good 👍. And I appreciate that it took hard work to get your channel going. I enjoy it.
I live in Nova Scotia. Dublin & London are closer than Vancouver!
