    It is now 2019 and I just bought the M5. I typically shoot with an 80D but wanted a smaller package--and the price was right. Thus far I am super happy with it, save for the lack of faster native lenses.

    I just got an M5 in 2022. It’s an “upgrade” from my trust m50 who’s evf sensor is on the fritz. I wanted the superior controls on the M5 and only shoot 1080p video anyway. The ef-m system is a great system with fast primes and slow zooms, but can also adapt tons of legacy slr lenses easily or lots of old manual lenses as well. I wonder if sigma will bring their new fast zoom to the efm mount
    Regardless, now a days it’s a great system for a good value

    So far EOS M5 looks good to me, agree with the need for WR bodies and WR lens, and more lens. The amount of information in this video is too in-depth, so good.

    I love this design and all the dials better than the M50. Wishing for a M5 Mrk II DIGIC 8, better timelapse and better everything.
    Can you do astrophotography with the M5?

    What I've noticed is that the 80D produces files that look similar to my fuji bodies in bright outdoor photography. I'm assuming the M5 will have canon signature colours but renders images similar to fuji. The 80D(very likely m5) definitely renders entirely different to Canon full frames. The tough issue with M5 is lackof native glass and adapting bulky EF or EF-S dslr glass.
    To me I use full size Canon bodies for events work and for a secondary system I use fuji. Adapting non native glass is a good alternative for the M5 but it still produces imbalance.

    i've been shooting this camera for 2 days with eos m 22mm f2. and guess what... canon 400mm f5.6. yes main reason i bought this is the 400mm. suprisingly, the af is so quick with the lens. i got many good photos in 2 days. but, i'm used to full frame camera, so i can't compare the iq to the full frame. but for everyday and instagram shooter, this camera is perfect. i love it.

    How do you feel about the M5 now, over a year later

    • @lucasdallecrode6376

      Hi. Greetings from Argentina. I decided to buy my M5 after watching this video and another one by Jared Polin. I am very happy, the digic 7 processor is far superior to the digic 6 above. I admit that I use Canon L series lenses and the image quality in photos is excellent. The tracking autofocus works very well and the quality of materials is very good. The duration of the battery reaches 400 shots. Watching this video 1 year later, I see that Canon added 4k and revatible screen on the M50 but with a totally plastic body but with a newer processor, the digic 8. I hope to have helped if you had any questions.

    Great review!!! I cannot decide XT20 or M5 yet. How quick and accuracy of auto focus on still image for both models?

  •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree, Canon can "destroy" the market with great dualpixel fullframe mirrorless.. I dont know why they didnt make it with m5 at the same time or instead of m6. Though they will charge fortune for that. I think m5 is still more expensive than it should be. I bought 80d because for battery life. And if they screw that also with full frame mirrorless.. people will still buy sony a7 instead as they do now. And they should have their own speed booster to use their full frame lenses with m5.

    • @JoaquimGonsalves
      @JoaquimGonsalves 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what the rumor mills say, they just might launch their own speed booster.:)

    Interesting to look back on your predictions on the EOS M mount now that the R mount is out :) You almost had it :)

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am surprised they made a completely different mount though. Like Sony and Leica, the two formats could have shared the same mount, thus shared some lenses. Either way, Canon had to make a mirrorless full frame camera.

    • @carlgarrard9710
      @carlgarrard9710 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's because of the lenses for RF. So far they seem like the next generation of optical quality well beyond what we've held to the highest standard. They felt they needed a bigger mount to achieve that level of quality. And, that they needed that level of quality to entice pro's to the RF system. Pro's marry lenses, they date bodies ;).

    Hi Take Great video. I have no interest in buying the M5 but your presentation style and industry insight makes it compelling viewing. If you ever get chance would be really good to get you to review Fujifilm and other mirrorless bodies
    with lenses such as Voigtlander, Leica, etc

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate you watching the video, despite having no interest in the camera... at this time :-) I would love to incorporate more brands into my review list, including 3rd party lenses. The problem I have is access in Canada. We are a small market, and many of these companies use distributors which have no interest in working with reviewers like myself. I'll do my best though. Thanks again for watching!

    I'd love to see Canon come out with a grip extender or third party. How is the AF in lower light for stills?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      dual pixel AF does very well in lowlight, but it depends on the lens too. The 22mm STM lens will probably focus the best in low light.

  • @RolleiPollei
    @RolleiPollei 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I haven't been up to date on these and actually thought until now that it was an SLR. They really do need to do something about the style. It's definitely made it more difficult for me to decide on what new digital to get though. Wish I still had my FD mount 85mm 1.2L. I'd love to adapt it to one of these.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, although I wouldn't go as far as to say the camera is 'ugly', it definitely needs a distinct aesthetic to distinguish it from their DSLR line. I would love to have some vintage FD glass. That 85mm f/1.2 would weigh more than the camera!!

    • @RolleiPollei
      @RolleiPollei 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      bigheadtaco That was the only FD lens I had and I missed so many shots with the super narrow DOF and it being manual focus only. Lost interest in 35mm and traded it all for medium format. Now all this mirrorless gear makes me excited for smaller formats again.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I was really surprised how well the M5 performed, keeping up with the bigger DSLRs with the same sensor and processor. All Canon needs is better native lenses, a pro body to drive interest to their mirrorless eco-system (we know flagships don't make money, but they do increase the prestige of a brand or line-up), and distinguish their mirrorless cameras from their DSLRs as well as the competition. If I was Fujifilm or Sony, I would be worried about this sleeping giant waking up to mirrorless.

    As to the design ethos; the T90 was desined by Luigi Colani so they have done it previously?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the T90 was pretty unique when it came out, and you can see how it carried over to the first EOS 1 and every successive pro body design. It's now a bit dated and I would love to see a refresh. T90 was a great camera though wasn't it?

    The issue with canon is that they have crappy lenses for their apps-c bodies. Fuji has come out with amazing glass. I'm a canon shooter with an old rebel 550d. I had rented the canon 6d and loved it because of the lens. Unfortunately, it was missing a lot of things. The 6d mark2 is such a disappointment that and am now an cònsidering moving switching. It's all about the lenses and Fuji figured that out but canon refuses to come out with amazing apsc glass

    I have a 700D, with 50mm 1.8 and the kitlens. Will a fuji t20 be an upgrade if i get the 18-55/2,8-4,0 kit lens?. Or should i just get better glas for the 700D? I like the smaller form factor and the dials.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's totally up to you, but switching between entire systems is something I typically don't recommend. It's expensive and time consuming. However the X-T20 is a fantastic entry level mirrorless camera.

    Great video as always👍🏻M5 or XT-20?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For video M5 for sure, for stills, the X-T20 performs better (less shutter lag, faster AF) but image quality wise, I'd say they're almost equal. Slight advantage to Fujifilm for better high ISO performance and colours with film profiles.

    • @glud800
      @glud800 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bigheadtaco why do you say that the M5 is better for video?

    • @dearangel9535
      @dearangel9535 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stefano Gentile probably the autofocus! And the image quality for 1080p is really great! I use the M5 for both video & stills

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      microphone input is the standard 3.5mm size versus the smaller 2.5mm input on the X-T20. The image stabilization and AF tracking not the Canon is vastly superior to the Fujifilm. Yes the X-T20 has 4K video, but the Canon's 1080P is very very good. Not all 1080p and 4K is created equal.

    Nikon needs to step up. Canon is finally adapting to the future with a solid mirrorless camera, still wouldn't pick this over Fuji, fujinon lenses are too good and compared to this, the lineup is far far better

    • @heythere6983
      @heythere6983 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I almost got the Fuji bc of that rational but really the m series has a 22mm f2 which is very sharp for 200 bucks, they have a 11-22 mm lense which is basically as good as the Fuji wide angle zoom and you have the option to use cheaper primes or get the sigma art series lenses which are super highly regarded for the same prize as the Fuji lenses when it comes to primes, you can also use the sigma 1.8 zoom lense that holds the zoom the whole way through for less than 800 dollars , you actually have better options for the canon, and can comfortably upgrade lenses whereas the Fuji primes are a big jump for most people. I went on 500px and Flickr and the Fuji really doesn't look any better than the canon, I actually found the Fuji to have more noise as a common thing, I also heard fujis pictures don't hold up to well in post if you wanna customize your pics in detail. You can get canon shots to have that retro look but I think you can't get the Fuji to pop as much as a canon or atleast stylistically like a canon if you wanted to do more

  • @heythere6983

    I want to buy this but I feel this isn't really much more portable than an 80d. The body is a lil but smaller but if I use a kit lense this isn't really going to be comfortable in my pocket. And if I get an adapter and use maybe 2 primes, it won't fit either. You're going to want a lil bag and if that's the case the 80 is a better camera . And I won't need to spend 200 for an adaptor for the 80d

    Interesting discussion here! I am pleasantly surprised about Canon making this move. Although I have to say I prefer Canon's decision on the aesthetics of the camera, it just looks Canon and not Fujifilm or Nikon. Makes me dream about Nikon trying to catch up on the mirrorless market. If only Nikon did something like this that looks like the classic Nikon F3... Golly!!
    Wishlist for Nikon :
    1. Make it look like the Nikon F3.
    2. Learn from Fujifilm's dial system or even try to be simple like Leica.
    3. Do not make a new lens mount, just use the existing one.
    4. Full frame sensor.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nikon is in a very precarious position at this time. I think their biggest mistake was to build a 1" sensor mirrorless ILC initially. They should have either joined the M43, which they would have been successful along with Panasonic and Olympus, or else go full speed with an initial APS-C sensor. Then, like everyone else, upgrade to full frame once you have the customer base. I don't think Nikon is now in a position to do any of these things, unless they are bought out by someone like Ricoh, Sony or even Fujifilm. Mitsubishi (current owner of Nikon) does not have the will or the technology (although they do have the financing) to battle against Sony, Fujifilm, Canon, Olympus and Panasonic in a shrinking camera market.

    • @LeelandLee
      @LeelandLee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree! That being said, we can all dream and hope that Nikon does not give up on trying to compete with this rapidly growing market.
      Do you believe the mirror less market will occupy the majority of the consumer pro camera market in the very near future?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the top end pro stills market will still be occupied by DSLRs, and there will be a separation between pro and consumer products. The blur between pro and consumer will be seen in the mirrorless market. At this point Nikon is too late to start a new mirrorless system. People have pretty much settled into their favourite brand. Canon is late, but that's why they've done an about face on mirrorless and pumping out M bodies like there's no tomorrow. Nikon, even if they decide to compete now, would be at least 1 year away from a new system. How many lenses would they release? How long will people be willing to wait? If Nikon wants into the mirrorless market, they need to go M43, or convince Fujifilm to work with them and create a Nikon body that takes the Fujifilm X mount. I think the M43 route makes more sense.

    • @terrywbreedlove

      Nikon could make a big move into mirrorless easy. They have the name they have the customers and importantly they already have a huge presence in the market place. If they build the right camera you would see it in stores everywhere over night. Places that FUJI have not yet penetrated.

How do I know without having an M5? I have a Canon EOS 100D (SL1) which is very close. The M5 is the most beautiful from the M series. And beats Fujifilm in color rendition.
