    Mooer Audio's Black Truck picks up the load where the Red Truck stops. You'll get more muscle in terms of distortion: perfect for metal and aggressive classic rock. The dirt is amply complemented by overdrive (more dirt!); compression; SPACE (reverb and delay); and modulation (flanger, phaser and tremolo). You can tap-tempo any of the time-based effects and save combinations of the 6 effects into 5 presets. There's a tuner onboard and you'll find a cabinet-simulated headphone output that doubles as a DI feed to your mixing desk, monitoring system or DAW of choice. The popular 4CM (four cable method) is catered for and you'll find Send & Return jacks on the rear. If you're into huge sounds with extreme portability, you'll want to have a look at the Black Truck.
    Today's tools:
    Guitar: 2010 Ernie Ball Music Man Axis
    Amp: MI Amplification Iron Duke V2 and Laney L2T Cabinet with Celestion Heritage G12's
    Cables: Various
    Power Supply: PowerAll 2A 9VDC (PSU not supplied with Black Truck. Requirements 1A 9VDC).
    Mic: Shure SM57 (Laney cab); Samson Airline77 (me)
    Camera: Canon 60D (me) and Nikon D5100 (Black Truck)
    Soundcard: PreSonus Quantum & Fractal Audio Systems Axe-FX III (guitar, mixing and bouncing).
    Monitors: Blue Sky Media Desk 2.1
    Computer: Apple iMac 27" i7 3.4 GHz 16 GB RAM
    Software: Logic Pro X, Waves Plugins, Apple Final Cut Pro X (video editing and TH-cam compression).

    Finally got my hands on one of these for a demo. The high gain is actually not bad at all. But it does take some time to dial in. It can get pretty ridiculous really quick. It absolutely nails Dimebag at moderate settings. At lower settings it is more akin to how the mooer rage machine sounds at low levels. It also has loads of low end, which I'm sure isn't apparent in a video demo. The hi gain section sounds best with some high end cut and the mids pushed on the eq. Very easy to get a rectifier sound. Or let it rip for Randallesque bite. Unlike a metal zone, as most people are comparing it, this would easily cut through a mix. It's a very in your face distortion, like a metal muff. My guess is that they based it on either their Blade pedal or the afforementioned Rage Machine pedal. I'm inclined to say it's the latter (go check rage machine demos). Personally, I would never run it beyond 10 o'clock on the gain. And even then, it needs to be ran through a closed back cab to tame the highs. The treble is real on the Hi Gain section. Everything else on it is fantastic. The comp is probably the high point. It is great for an always on compressor. If you have used the mooer yellow comp, you already know. It's a diamond clone. The comp combined with high gain kinda feels like a rat, with all that sustain.
    The modulation is very usable and the OD is basically their green mile pedal which is an excellent TS clone. Comp and Od together just sings. Very addictive. I quite like the overdrive section, it's a bit hotter than a typical TS9 and not overly mid pushed. Sounds a lot like an OCD actually but with less maximum gain.
    I think I'll keep this pedal. Would be perfect for gigs, even if I would only use the hi gain for solos (doubtful even then). I'm gonna open it up and see if I can modify the Hi Gain section to lower the output or tame the high frequency and then it would be a perfect gig pedal. Especially with the routing options and switchable fx loop (which can also be configured in your presets) 9/10.
    Would give a ten if they didn't go overboard with the high gain, but I admit it does sound pretty good as is with humbuckers and a large cabinet. Or at low gain to push a dirty Marshall style amp to give it some gnarly compression. Probably wouldn't sound good through a fender, especially with the inherent mid cut. If they used their actual Rat clone (the black Secret) in that section, it would sell like hotcakes. It's almost perfect. The flange, btw is exactly like the eleclady, which nails The Wall tones. It's almost Gilmour in a box.
    Hopefully the hi gain section can be modded so it can be just that. InstaGilmour with a fuzz in front and a good chorus/Leslie in the fx loop. My hope is that this section is completely isolated so I can just install the Black Secret pedal there (or the Muff clone) and completely do away with whatever is in there. Don't get me wrong, it's not terrible. And it definitely djents with the right can, but I'm not a big metal guy. And I always prefer amp distortion anyway.
    The cab Sim is ok. Not great. But not many companies do a good Sim anyway. Not at this price especially. My only other gripe is that the tremolo is kinda meh. If you like the mooer trelicopter, then you'll like this. It's not bad but it's not great. Tho I know a lot if people like the mooer trem a lot. It used to be one of their best selling pedals from what I've read.
    Haven't tried running the entire pedal through the amp fx loop yet, but I've found that the red truck sounds best like that. Bypassing amp preamps completely.

    • @LeviBulger
      @LeviBulger 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also should mention that the black truck is dead quiet, except for when high gain is engaged (the noise gate helps there obviously). Some of the first red trucks were noisy, but they have since fixed those and this one is just as quiet. Huge plus. I'm going to post a video soon of the black truck through a Marshall fx loop (bypassing preamps completely). The red truck sounds best that way I'm, but haven't tried this one yet in that fashion.

      In Ola Englund's demo, the hi gain sounded great as soon as Ola turned it on

    • @LeviBulger
      @LeviBulger 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kappa Chino yeah definitely. I hadn't seen his video before I posted this. Ola knows how to dial in his tones very well when it comes to video demos. As for Bergs, sometimes I think he allows too much treble through to his interface. I'm not exactly sure how he's sending his signal. Almost sounds like he's going direct on here. But Ola used his big cab and mic'd it which sounds killer and always works best for recording high gain IMO. That said, Olas video also sounded great when he went to the cab Sim. I wonder if he has a nice preamp going on with his interface. His videos always sound incredible. I love Bergs demos, but he and a ton of other guys always have too much treble. I'm sure it sounds great in the room tho

    Brett, I love your descriptive words like, "squeezy" and "chewy". (Only fellow electric guitarists can understand.) Thanks for the review. I now have the Red Truck and the Black Truck. I'm planning to use the chorus and delay sections from the Red Truck and the distortion and OD sections from the Black Truck via 4-cable method. Best of both worlds! (I hope it works!)

    Man I must say, I'm really diggin' that high-gain module. Seen lots of people say it's crap, but in front of (or behind for that matter) a decent amp, mixing with amp's color and tone of the right speakers, that's a slamming heavy tone. Def gotta grab one of these and put the high-gain DI signal into my DAW with some cab sims. For the price, this rig is hard to beat! Probably more suitable for recording and home dabbling rather than live, as it does have that quick cut-out when you add on effects or switch presets, so that's not too cool.

    Mooer have been coming out with some really good quality and reasonably priced multi effect pedals for the last 1-2 years with the Black & Red Trucks, the GE 200, and the Ocean Machine which I own. When I first played around with my O.M. I remembered just a couple of years before I had bought (and sold) Mooers pretty feeble Shimverb for around £70, and since those days they have come on leaps and bounds.
    Regarding the Truck units, the Black is ok but I'm not a big fan of high gain sounds. For my tastes I do prefer the Red, I really liked the juicy overdrive/distortion on it.
    They both have their pro's & cons, the Black has the pluses of having the compressor & EQ.....but that juicy overdrive on the Red.....So in that respect, it's maybe a little too expensive to have both of the Trucks side by side so the GE 200 might be a better buy, I haven't really had a good enough listen to it though....

    I just bought one and it does NOT come with its own Power Supply. I think the TH-cam demo guys should try to include that info in their demo videos. This pedal takes a 9V DC 1A (pos outside ring, neg inside ring). You will need to purchase this separately unless you already own one!

    Beats the NUX Cerberus in terms of tone - and global tap. With the NUX, if you are in preset mode you lose tap.
    The NUX does have MIDI and decent IR if you need to control other devices and/or DI.

  • @MarcCoteMusic
    @MarcCoteMusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great demo, Brett... but I've come to expect that.
    I think this unit, much like the Red Truck, is really best going into an amp. The direct sounds are... so-so. For direct, Mooer have the GE200 and the upcoming GE300. Also, I find it odd that the very thing that separates this from the Red Truck is the high gain section... which is the only section I don't like. The OD section on this unit, on the other hand, sounds great! To each their own, naturally.

    • @allofyourdreams
      @allofyourdreams 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should have had a Chorus instead of the Tremolo to be honest.

    • @MarcCoteMusic
      @MarcCoteMusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd agree with that. If you only have one modulation-style effect it really should be chorus, so, to have three... and none of them is chorus, seems strange.

    • @LeviBulger
      @LeviBulger 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The flange can be set as a chorus on this. It's basically the eleclady, which is the more chorusey flanger as opposed to the evh jet sound flange. You just turn the rate down and adjust the modulation to taste.

    Great review as always mate. Gotta say this unit is sadly crippled. What’s the point of having presets if you can’t save the effects parameters to a preset. I wouldn’t care if it had midi, but that feature’s missing too... That sucks... it’s a no for me.

    I would love to to hear the high gain with less mids,bass,and more highs .The high gain sounds like a peavey 3120 high gain which I don't care for.I want to know if you can get a good 80s solo sound out of high gain section . I'm an old rocker.mooer could put a switch on the high gain section to change the internal EQ from modern to classic like egnater has done in the past

    I like the sound of it. I wonder how this will sound in 4 cable method. I hated the sound of my BOSS GT-100 untill i tried the 4 cable method. It sudenly started to sound the way I want, and it is hooked up to a small bedroom practice amp. I still like this unit more then the BOSS GT-100. This one have knobs i can turn to adjust the sound, on my BOSS unit i have to mess with the menus to change anything. Now I have a challenge. This mooer black truck or BOSS ME-80? Similar price, both easy and fast to use units. I just need to find a way to compare the sound.

    Better gain and mods than the NUX Cerberus. Just add some cab em/R loader unit, maybe another delay and a fave OD/booster upfront, and it's yr grab 'n go rig. I'd want a Univibe in front.
    The drives on the Cerberus are crap and the phaser & 'vibe are post-gain! Gotta run them pre-gain. And it didn't have a comp.
    Good IR tho. But IR's are easy to come by.
    Red/Black Truck FTW!
