    I keep saying there are "2 springs in an OTF". What I meant was, "The spring inside an OTF is deployed and retracted using both sides of the spring". Most OTFs only have ONE spring, though I believe the Microtech Scarab actually DID have 2. I could be wrong though. Just wanted to clarify!

    The OTF lock isn't as "trustworthy", but if it fails, the blade just retracts. If the lock fails on an OTS auto or a manual folder, it can close on your fingers.

      @@davidliftsheavycircles its ONLY going to fail if you go head on with it and the object you try to pierce is too hard and the motion kicks the knife in the manner where it can break the lock and close on your fingers.
      If the swing or motion stays ON the sharp edge side 100% of the time, it will never close on your fingers, it may break backwards which is OK because the flat side of the blade will not cut your back side of your hand.
      Basic use of the knife in the proper motion, it will never close on your fingers.

    I think I'm gonna go for an OTF as a construction worker. I wish there were options with taller blades, but I understand the packaging challenges. The hardest thing I'm likely to do with my knife is strip large wire, but it's WAY more common for me to need the knife for a few seconds at a time or one handed. WAYYYYY more common. If not OTF, I would go for an axis lock or push button manual.

    • @Mr.Fields.
      @Mr.Fields. 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just don’t use that OTF to cut any Tyvek tape on the job site. Imagine having a fancy OTF and not wanting to use it because you have to cut some thing sticky or dirty. “ I have a knife, but can I borrow yours?”

  • @silverapple2011
    @silverapple2011 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very good points. I can relate on why I got an OTF.
    • Ease of carry. Much slimmer and less bulky than my Benchmade CLA.
    • Ease of deployment. In-out. Sometimes you just need to make a quick cut and not go through the whole opening/closing process of a folder.
    • Ease of retracting. Like stated, with an auto folder, you have a harder time closing.
    • Safer. Due to the previous point, I often leave my auto folder open laying around instead of on my pocket. This includes the seat of my car...
    I sold my CLA and I received my Microtech Ultratech last month and I'll be keeping it for a long time.

    My Single Action Halo 5 has absolutely no blade play in it and absolutely has the same durability with the locking mechanism as side opening does it's awesome. I believe there is a video of a Microtech double action OTF being plunged through a 50 gallon steel drum multiple times and it's still works flawlessly.

    A comment about the front blade locks on OTF knives: Inexpensive knives have thinnish locks that appear stamped with irregular edge profiles, and oversize lock recess that allow the lock to move around when under engagement pressure. Lock failure during the "nail test" isn't due to the lock tab failing, but to the oversized pocket allowing the lock to "bounce" when the handle is being hammered, causing the blade to momentarily unlock and collapse into the handle. When the knife is disassembled the lock appears "fine" because it wasn't a material failure, it was the result of additive variables. virtually any budget OTF can be greatly improved by replacing the stock front lock with a custom made one 1.5mm thick, with flat side edges, and rounded front and back (like Microtech), hand-fitted into the lock recess. The result is reduced or eliminated lock movement when engaged, and the rounded lock "nose" that sits behind the blade will tend to rotate toward the blade centerline under direct tip pressure, thus gaining the added strength of the handle material versus the stock, irregularly "squared" lock edge that tends to rotate away from blade centerline under pressure, making it easy to "bounce" out of engagement when hammering the handle.
    Superior blade locks are one of the reasons it's worth shelling out the money for a Microtech. They're thicker, perfectly shaped, and fitted into equally perfect trapezoidal lock recess that allow the lock to move only in the manner designed. You'll never "bounce" a MT blade lock out of engagement by hammering the handle, and in that regard, the DA OTF becomes equal to a hinged-blade knife.

  • @randallscott-key802
    @randallscott-key802 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Something I've yet to hear any reviewer mention is the construction of the Infidel versus the Combat Troodon, or any of the common MT DA OTF knives. In the MT line the blade rides on anodized aluminum which is quite hard and acts as a decent bearing surface, but, the Infidel uses twin plates of polished steel which is also quite hard and super-slick, imposing little friction to the blade. Given an equal "grit load" the steel on steel action inside an Infidel will function when the steel on anodized aluminum inside the MT will experience a stoppage. Also, that bit of "extra" play so many have commented on with the Infidel isn't simply an oversight or the result of poor build quality, or inferior design. The "play" has zero negative impact on function or strength, but allows the knife to work "dirty" versus binding up with the slightest amount of debris.
    MT blades locks (discussed below) are super-high toleranced which means they can be clogged up by liquid ooze taking the knife out of action. The swinging hinge style dual locks in the Infidel are more expensive to make and time, but it would take more "ooze" to impede their function, and there are two. Additionally, MT blade locks are spring-driven - with tiny coils, while the Infidel's locks are actuated by a powerful leaf spring stack. The Infidel also uses coil compression springs to drive the blade which eliminates a prime weakness of coil extension springs - the single coil on the end that loops into the blade hooks. Then the hooks themselves...MT uses a bent-steel version to extend the blade, thickly built and well tempered for sure, but the Infidel uses a massive drum on the end of the drive rod - zero flex, and will never get tweaked due to repetitive spring force.
    Not that I'm worried about my MT knives failing, but when you look at each design point by point, it's clear the Benchmade is a superior design for reliable function, but it's also a more expensive knife to build. When you look inside a MT your first thought is, why did this cost so much?, but when you look inside an Infidel you know exactly why it cost so much!
    Both are excellent, well-crafted knives though.

  • @randallscott-key802
    @randallscott-key802 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the Atomic Defender gives the Lightning a run for the same money. It's a big, loose copy of the Combat Troodon that fires very hard and solid. Like all so-called "budget" OTFs it's heavy due to Zinc-alloy handle, and it has a modest front blade lock of around 1mm thickness, set into a somewhat oversized lock recess, but this is no different than every other OTF in the class. When lock out, the blade is quite solid with just a hint of blade movement. With a sharp blade it's as a good a "cutter" as any hinge-blade since the closely-fitted handle supports the blade very well. I doubt it would do as well in the "nail test" but it would be in the company of most at the point of lock failure.

    My wife and I tried a lot of side automatics at Blade Show Texas and we really didn't see any advantage for them over OTFs other than being more resistant to debris.
    We found it easier to find the trigger and fire an OTF than the button on a side automatic, and she really didn't like how the Protechs almost jumped out of her hand.
    Plus, as you pointed out, OTFs are the easiest knife to put away one-handed, bar none, and side autos are one of the worst.

    A point I just thought of; what if you’re wearing thick gloves? Wouldn’t it be a bit harder to push the button instead of actuating the switch on an OTF? Doubt that would be a real big point, but I dunno, it might be one of those things that might not matter, but when it does, it might suddenly be a larger point to think about

    The only thing keeping otf knives from being far more superior over the switch blades is simple. Its a bitch to clean, and if the spring goes bad, the whole knife is good as phucked. Their also too extensive in terms of using them as a disposable knife. So heres what i got after watching this vid. For cutting dry substances like rope or cardboard, use otfs. For cutting things such as food or for self defense, use switch blades

      every style of knife has its positive and negative.
      OTF is the most convenient for everyday basic use but its the weakest.
      OTS manual requires more work but if the lock fails and the motion is right, it can close on your fingers ....
      OTS auto is the same with less work.
      Straight fixed blade is the best but the size of it makes it difficult to carry.
