FAULTY VW GOLF Rain Sensor - How To BYPASS

  • In this video we show a simple workaround for your Volkswagen Golf Mk5 Rain Sensor not working properly. It is very easy to disconnect the sensor so that you can manually work your intermittent speed on the wipers and manually control your lights as well. In this car the wipers have been 'playing up' for years. In fact from memory they have never worked properly.

    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    Vince, when you removed the sensor circuit board you actually just took the back off the sensor housing leaving the front of the housing in the bracket. You should be able to pry out the front also which will remove the gel piece with it leaving a clear gap. Whenever the gel goes bad it’s best to replace the sensor to get new gel as it’s needs to be transparent in order to detect light and movement of the rain drops.

    I got a golf Mark 5 for over 10 years now, amazing car! A couple of years ago i had my windshield replaced, and the sensors werent working as they should, turned out there is some kind of gel between the glass and the sensors, replaced that and it worked perfectly

    As a windscreen tech I see this all the time. The sensor can be separated from the screen easily by using a flat head screwdriver either side where the backing plate separated. The silicone gel pad has got air bubbles behind it. Very easy fix with silicone gel

    Went to a few of these as a trainee windscreen tech, as said the gel is separating from the sensor to the screen.
    IIRC the aftermarket screens we'd get from Laddles didn't suffer as bad from this.

    The entire sensor does come out. The frame around the sensor is mounted to the glass and is the anchor for the mirror.
    The "white" diamonds is the separation of the gel pad between the glass and the sensor. The can shrink and become brittle over time. The new sensor you showed on Ebay had a new gel pad on top. The 4 diamonds were black on the new sensor because of the gel pad making proper contact.

    I had this on a nearly new Skoda Octavia, with lights on auto they would often come on in bright sunshine. Took back to Skoda dealer and after initialy saying it could be a bad earth, they then said the 'auto' lights feature was actually meant for tunnels in Europe, where a road may have several tunnel sections - it wasn't meant for lazy drivers to just leave it in that position so they didn't have to manualy turn the lights on when it was dark enough - so they weren't going to do anything about it. Never went back to that dealer.

  • @dml1970
    @dml1970 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    the white is actually air bubbles in the gel, it should be perfectly flush with the windscreen and have no bubbles at all, that is what the problem is the sensors can not see though the air bubbles.

    Nice little fix. I never use the automatic settings on the wipers. Lights yes, because it's easier. If it's foggy or I need full beam I have to do it manually of course. My Girlfriends car does even switch the full beam on and off automaticly.

  • @batluckies
    @batluckies ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Maybe it's different on your brothers Golf MK5, but on both of my GTIs it's different.
    1. When you put the setting "off" the wipes won't work. And that's logical because "Off" is off. You have to put it on the setting intermediate (1 position above "Off") and there you can choose the sensitivity.
    2. When the Golf doesn't move and stands like when it's parked, the wipers won't automatically work. You have to drive and reach over 15Km/h, at least one time, so that they start working in the intensity/sensitivity that you chose.

    • @batluckies

    Vince..i also drive a VW but alot newer...all the diamonds in the sensor are black...mine works perfectly...i had a windscreen repair and the man who repaired it replaced the sponge that fixes to the windscreen...its crucial that no condensation from the windscreen enters the sensor, a good fix would be to use a strong double - sided tape and re-apply to the windscreen.

  • @michaelthomas3646
    @michaelthomas3646 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would say it is more like fingerprints on sellotape Vince, whereby after you remove your finger then the tape turns white. but when applied to something like glass the fingerprint doesn't show up quite as much, so my suspicion is the sensor pad has come away from the windscreen which gives it the misted look.

  • @AcornElectron
    @AcornElectron ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure this was a fix but I can identify with the issue, one of mine (a ford focus) is temperamental with its rain detection. Also, you’re not mimicking rain, it needs drops and force but that’s probably inconsequential. No advice here because these sensors are a nightmare.
    Keep up the good work and, as always, stay safe!

    • @michaelthomas3646
      @michaelthomas3646 ปีที่แล้ว

      the thing that causes it is like fingerprints on sellotape, then not quite so visable when compressed onto glass, it is the gel releasing it's grip on the windscreen, heating the glass up and applying pressure from the mirror side should allow the gel to demist it again. unless you can actually get to the gel pad, which applying pressure, and heat from inside the car would be better,

    You should use led light when testing light sensor. Halogen color and bright isn't enough. You get answer for the gel but also problem for your test prosedure. Wipers sensitivity use also speed information in one of many parameters to wipe.

    when you first took the rear view mirror off it wasn't actually slid in the grooves properly, the rear view mirror actually pushes the sensor against the glass, so if this isn't pushed on properly the sensor wouldn't be able to read fully. Windscreen technician with 5 years service so far. also the metal bracket is glued to the glass and I would advise not to remove this . the gel pad holding the sensor against the screen gets baked on with the sun which is why it didnt come out and split in half.

    Fix or not but interesting to see the light sensor / rain sensor in this Golf and how to bypass it.
    My car has only light sensor for the automatic lights on top of the dashboard, but no rain sensor, as it's lower spec Kia Rio, LX trim level. Higher EX trim level would have the rain sensor as well for automatic wipers. My car has adjustable timer for the intermittent wipers so that's good enough for me.

    It's air Between the contacting gel bad/mat and the Glass that you see and it shouldent be there as it now cant see the water on the glass and thats why it dosent work.
    Here in Finland you have to drive your car with hedlights on, even the 24h sunny day that we have ones a year at midsummer. No matter is it day or not. so the automatic is for lover voltage/dimmer headlights or different "Daytime Runing Lights"(DRL) that some cars have.

    Have a similar prob on my older jag, only it's occasionally. The map lights however come on and off at the slightest change in light, a dappled road is a nightmare. I fixed this once but, in doing so, hit the Jag DIY sensor which put the car in limp mode ... I just ignore them now.
    NB some of these sensors are linked to the speed of the car, they won't activate if the car is stationary.

    In my golf mark 7 if you go to settings, car settings you can turn the automatic wipers off. I personally find them very erratic. It'll come on when only a really mild drizzle yet not come on sometimes when it's raining hard. It's not the best system. Not that I've seen a good system. The one on a BMW makes the wipers run so irregularly makes one feel sick! Rather than the usual rhythmic pattern it's like an irregular heart beat!

    Hey Vince, You should look into the CAN Bus system the car uses to communicate back the BCM on that car. Its not whats wrong but the network that is running in side that car is super interesting. That sensor has power, ground and a data line. The micro controller joins the "network" of all the other devices. For instance the wiper and headlight triggers aren;t even standard circuits. They are powered and when you move the knob or whatever the stuff is turned on via software. That's the way most cars are now. I have a 2011 Audi A4 and a cable, once you get into the network you can do all kinds of fun stuff

    Auto-lights and auto-rain sensor have to be the DUMBEST features ever. Take the simplest things and add unnecessary sensors, pcb's, and switches. Yeah, that'll make it better and keep costs down!? The other dumbest thing, at least here in the US, is the DRL (daytime running lights) which typically only activate front lights. Dumb drivers think their lights are on and don't turn them on at dusk or night thus drive around with the tail of the car completely dark!
