    ts590sg sold a year ago for a ftdx10; after a few months I decided to go back to the 590sg to never go back; ftdx10 is great rtx, even if, in my humble opinion, it is more a computer than a real radio and the fascination of radio is also not knowing how many stations there are, where they are .. is not needing a screen touch and screen to select menus within menus; on 590sg many of the useful functions are available directly from the front panel and this is the type of radio that I personally prefer (without detracting from the many possibilities that an ftdx10 has especially in the digital world without the need for a computer)

      I LOVE that rig!! What serial number did you get?
      Did you also get the matching CW paddle with it?
      I remember when those came out, you had to cut away the UPC number off the box and send it into Kenwood prove that you had one… that was tough on keeping the box intact, but it got you a really nice extra piece for the transceiver.
      It’s not often you find it all together.
      Either way, you have one very special transceiver there my friend! HOLD ONTO IT!!
      All the best and I’m really impressed with your 70th Anniversary 590 SG!!

    I had a 590SG (70th anniversary edition) about five years ago, but sold it in search of the fancy-pants SDR type radios. I went to a Flex 6400M, then a Yaesu FTDX101D, and then to a Mission RGO One (with an Elad FDM-DUo as a backup). The RGO One was a great superhet radio on CW...until I had to replace a tiny IPex cable due to power droppages. I sold it immediately and am going back to the 590SG. It arrives Monday. Simplicity, beauty, and ability to drive an external SDR for a razor-sharp panadapter display (compared to the cartoonish ones like the 101D. Ergonomics is very important to me, and the 590SG excels in that area as well as performance.

      Thanks buddy, I appreciate that. Had to sell for an antenna purchase. Hated doing that. But this is too important to miss out on.
      After a good talk with my wife, my first idea of showing a different radio every month that’s entry-level was thrown out the window. Too much stress in additional work on me with all the things I do now for my family.
      But the antenna purchase is too important to not do. Because I need it.
      Thanks for your kindness. You know in my heart how much I want a Kenwood here. But a directional always should come first. So the original idea while being thoughtful I think it’s probably not manageable for me at this point due to everything I do here for my family. My wife is worried about me burning out. And she made some valid points. So, the directional will come and maybe the other idea down the road.

      @@HamRadioLiveShow wow, so you sold the 590?

    • @HamRadioLiveShow
      @HamRadioLiveShow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lizzyfan1986 yeah, originally, I purchased it to have a Kenwood in the shack. Then, a reasonably priced Directional Antenna I don’t have came my way. I will always pick an antenna if it’s a quality one, over anything else.
      so, it was a tough decision initially, but for what it would help me to do with the channel here, it was the right choice. It wasn’t easy though. It never is when you like something.
      I had the choice to cancel the transaction or bring the radio here and do a short overview on it. I chose to do that because it could help others. The antenna takes a while to create and be ready to be picked up.
      So for me, I felt at least it was best to show the 590 after finding out about the opportunity to get the directional residential let it go and miss the opportunity altogether.

    Ive had this radio, it has a good old school feel to it but I think it has been left behind and needed an updated replacement years ago... Yeah the receiver and tx quality is up there near the 7300 and ftdx 10 but those radios give you more with waterfall displays which adds another layer of visual of what you are hearing. I never really liked the noise reduction on the 590sg , the 7300 is slightly better in that regard but the ftdx 10 is even better. I actually love kenwood but they seem to have fallen by the wayside, I keep waiting for a smaller-cheaper version of the 890s which could replace the 590 but nothing so far.

      ALSO... Kenwood suddenly STOPPED MAKING the MC-60A ($180) desk mic for their HF base station radios!
      Now... the owners of TS-590/890/990 radios are left with just ONE expen$ive choice... the MC-90 desk mic with a jacked up co$t of $325.
      Last... right now, no one has an MC-90 (new) in stock. Oh well, you can always use the MC-43S hand mic (the cost of a replacement is now jacked UP to $70).

      I like both radios a lot. They’re both of course different… One superhet and one an SDR. They each have their special set of skills and advantages to learn.
      There’s nothing at all that compares to Kenwood sound however. They make the best sounding ham radios in the business.

    The Yaesu sounded harsher, but just as noisy as the Kenwood. The intelligibility sounded the same but the Kenwood sounds more pleasant for long periods of time. I have a 590S, NR1 = 3, NB2 = 2, Notch Wide ON and cranked fully clockwise., AGC fast. Also, RX and TX equalization tailored in arcp software. Sounds great to my ears. Tested some Icom and Yaseu at HRO and did not like what my ears heard. The only downside to the Kenwood is it might not handle immediately adjacent strong signals as well as the SDR type of tranceivers. Keeping my 590S for now.

  • @ratsstuff1952
    @ratsstuff1952 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have just got a TS590s - 2011. It is a great receiver, probably better than you will ever need but you do need to know how to use it. I use a narrowish band width, hb2 on recieve. The NR is not as effective as using the the RF gain to boost your SN ratio by turning it down and working the AGC in your favour. Using NB2 and the rf gain, noise is no longer present i kid you not! It is that good!
    I also use a 2003 vintage bhi audio dsp on a very low setting with a SP230 Kenwood speaker and the audio is crystal. I had tried a ftdx10 and a ic7300 and the TS keeps up with them on recieve in this configuration for not a lot of money.
    If you are hard up but want world class receive, the TS590s is a very good start.
    Transmit however....humm i have not had days playing with it yet as i have concentrated on the receive, but i think im going need a linear amp. My old FT 840 is much more powerful. My old IC7410 edges it too.

The Yaesu costs only around 100 euros more than the Kenwood, and with the FTDX10 I have the option to buy the ATAS 120 antenna controlled directly by the radio, no additional box ( tuner ) is needed.

    • @johncharles9105
      @johncharles9105 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@johncarr7684 this is normal, you won't find a 100 watt radio anywhere that puts out 100 watts on SSB, if you set the to 100 watts and whistle as loud as you can you might come close, that is why you always tune on CW or RTTY or even FM. Search and read on this subject, there is nothing wrong or unusual with your 590SG, all radios are like this. Enjoy the rig, it is one of the best ever made. BTW in SSB with audio peaks, you are likely putting out just over 100 watts. I am not sure how to explain this properly, but it is part of Ham Radio 101. You will need a peak power meter to see it.

    Thank's Larry, for this Video. Well I see that the 590 can hear better then the 101D? Hmm...
    If you do A/B comparison please take in account:
    - Use external, equal loudspeaker, on each transceiver.
    - Switch each 5 second, between A and B transceiver.
    - Switch during the same station is talking.
    - Don't talk yourself during the test.
    - Cut out in the video, for to search stations.
    Please take this as a constructive critic.

    • @HamRadioLiveShow
      @HamRadioLiveShow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 590 by the numbers is actually close to the 101D. However, it would be very unfair for me to do a comparison in this way just because of logistics my friend.
      The best audio comparison can be done through the Heil Parametric which goes directly into the TH-cam feed, not through a speaker that comes into a microphone that goes into TH-cam if that makes sense.
      The problem is that whenever you put a “Y coupler” connector to allow two inputs into one, you always get insertion loss as well as a possible ground loop.
      I did it with the best equipment I have the ability to pay for right now. Again, I’ve always spoken highly of the 590. And if I pre-produced my shows, it would be a cinch to get great content as an “A” to “B” comparison.
      The best way to always do it is a direct way into TH-cam. Then the problem lies with that provides the ability for ground loops and other issues.
      I know you already know this… But I just want to state that I always do my best to give me the best content that I can do. But there are limitations to how much money I can spend to do so. I don’t monetize this channel, and won’t because quite honestly it’s just in my eyes a no go option.
      People should be able to watch as well as listen to the entire show from beginning to end without a single commercial.
      So I’ll do my best to keep improving the I do things. I honestly appreciate your comment because it comes from your heart I didn’t mean something to you. I understand that. Thank you.
      All the best,
      Larry

      Dear Larry, you can do it really easy. Use the USB Sound Card output of each transceiver, feed it into your PC it's done :-) The easiest way is to use the software called "Voicemeeter Banana" (it's free).

    Hi Larry, Please, in your opinion what is the best choice Kenwood TS 590 SG or YAESU FTDX 10?

    • @HamRadioLiveShow
      @HamRadioLiveShow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FTDX 10. Hands down in my opinion.
      Definitely has a slower auto tuner then the 590 and it only has one antenna input where the 590 has two.
      But that’s where the advantages in my opinion end.
      I think the FTDX 10 is easier to use, has better filtering, superior noise reduction for sure, weighs less, is far easier to narrow or increase the passband, has a MUCH BETTER stock microphone and has incredible sensitivity and selectivity.
      With that said however, I believe both transceivers will still pick up the same signals through the same antenna at CLOSE to the same quality. The edge would in my opinion go to the 10.
      It’s also more expensive though…
      I think the FTDX 10 is one of the best transceivers you can buy on the market right now. Even at the price.
      In my experience, it is very likely to go down in price in the next eight months.
      Every new transceiver I can ever remember comes out with a high starting price, only to decrease within the first 12 months after introduction.
      The FTDX 10 released in December 2020. Black Friday sales should be strong on it in 2021. But there could be some price drops for sure between now and then.
      Of all the transceivers I have sold, that’s the one that was the hardest for me to let go of. It’s nearly the exact duplicate of the receiver I have on my FTDX101D.
      The slight nod goes to the more expensive FTDX 101 because of the VC tune which allows you to attenuate stronger signals in the passband giving a little extra selectivity to the FTDX 101.
      This is just my opinion based on my use of the Transceiver. And my experience based on that compared with the FTDX 101 that I have.
      Make the decision that’s best for you.
      Try them both out if you can. Explore their features. That will help you decide for sure.
      Perhaps neither of them work for you and maybe the 7300 could be a better fit…
      That’s between those two transceivers, in my opinion at least, do you FTDX 10 is the way to go. I know that I hope to have another one in the shack soon again. It’s that good.
      All the best and thank you so much for writing in from Brazil it’s my honor to have had you watch the show.
