I am coming recently to know this wonderful world of Penderecki - a reminder of the beauty we are capable of.

This symphony is titled 'Korean' because its composition is commissioned by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism to commemorate Korean’s Independence Day in 1991. Penderecki used melody of Korean song “Bird, bird, blue bird” as a basis of his passacaglia here.
Korean people suffered from Japan’s colonial rule from 1905 to 1945. Before the colonial occupation, in 1984, Donghak Movement took a place. Many peasants struggled against exploitation and Chosun dynasty wasn’t able to control them, so King Gojong requested a dispatch of troops to China. Japan sent its army to Korea as it had kind of right to do that as the result of the Sino-Japanese War. Though to Donghak movement had been put down, Japan did not withdraw its military forces and begun to accelerate the procedures to colonize Korean.
In the song “Bird, bird, blue bird”, people pray to blue bird, which means Japanese army, not to perch on mung bean flower, which symbolizes one of the greatest leader of Donghak. If you want, you can watch Sumi Jo singing the song at th-cam.com/video/c_M0wv__Xww/w-d-xo.html

I have known this 5° symphony of Penderecki for long since I have a record by Wit, but I did not know that it was named 'Korean'. I do not hear any allusion to the Korean musical language. Penderecki is here in new postromantic style and from the beginning some features bear indisputedly his signature.

It's called like that because it was commissioned by South Korean cultural society which exact name I don't remember. Although that nickname is not written down in the score. As far as I know there's also some melody taken by composer from Korean patriotic song which occurs a few times in the symphony (my guess would be among others a march starting at 19:29 but I may be wrong). Anyway it's hardly recognizable for European ear so Penderecki's Korean Symphony is not particularly Korean.

A Korean folk song appears at around 36:20. I don't think the march is from any korean song, at least I can't recognize.

That's because Korean government asked Penderetski to compose it. But he didn't use Korean scale.

the song is called blue bird! it's played in the middle register by the brass (overlayed with the strings' chromatic lines)

Not a bad symphony, Penderecki most certainly was a great orchestrator, with an obvious flair for the dramatic. Interesting painting as well, although I don't see how this critique of consumenterism is related to the music (besides the Korean theme).

Sure, the theme of the king's clown is present in art for ages. But in this particular case, I wouldn't say so. Lee Gil Woo likes to play with pop-art motives and mixing them with Korean drawings and patterns. That image is part of series based on snapshots taken by artists from his travel. I wouldn't look for a really deep interpretation.

Könnte es sein, dass Penderecki sich wiederholt...? Und weil er keine wirklichen Melodien mehr bildet, sondern nur mit den immergleichen Figuren hantiert, ist man seine Musik bald über.

Been sampling his Symphonies. 3, 7 and now this one. The faster scherzo-like bits seem to be the most interesting parts of this one. I wouldn't say that symphonic structure is his strong point. I think when he doesn't have a text to write to his works feel kind of shapeless. Always beautiful bits, but the best bits don't really take flight. Hints of minimalism here at times...and if I may say that mood music eats up a lot of real estate and richly developed sections are only evident in spurts...so it feels to me padded. Could have said what he said in about 20 minutes. And the ending sounds indecisive and silly. Kind of awkward banging around that does not sound like he knew how to end it. Sometimes textures and unique sounds are not enough to make a convincing case.

your taste and your opinion is in your ass. you can't compare his music to that of anybody else past or present. his style and music stands on its own. give me a link to one of your compositions so I can listen to and critique it.
