My buddy served during the Vietnam War and he said they had some South Korean combat troops serving alongside of them. These South Korean combat soldiers would share guard duty duties at night. My buddy says that the guards were supposed to yell halt three times before making any type of decision on whether to fire or not. The way he told it, the guy was supposed to yell halt wait two or three seconds yell halt and wait another few seconds and then issue a final halt command. The South Korean guards would yell the required halt command but it went like this: halt, halt, halt, with no waiting between each command. The South Korean guards would then open up. My buddy said everybody inside the compound slept well on those nights because they knew they were safe.

My grandfather was born to a wealthy North Korean household, 1944. He spent his early years during the Korean war, with his family having to leave their whole lives in the north to escape to the south amidst the conflict. Due to the impact it had on his life, my grandfather grew to resent communism, and a respect for Americans. He would go on to center most of his life around these values. At 14, my grandfather would illegally enlist in the Korean Marine Corps, and when Koreans first began to deploy to Vietnam in 1964, he was a part of one of the first units sent in, being the Second Blue Dragon Division. He would redeploy to Vietnam consecutively until 1973, and after making close friends with some of the American GIs he had fought alongside, decided to immigrate to New York with his wife and children. His daughter would go on to marry an American man, and out I came, born out of one man's hate of all things Communist

In real life, an ambush is never carried out like this. The side setting up the ambush would set up crossing lines of automatic fire (like a grid), and a small platoon walking into it would be wiped out. No matter which way they try to run, the grid pattern of the automatic fire would ensure they are hit. Also, the ambusher would never set up an ambush right next to a booby trap because the mechanical trap would take away the element of surprise. Lastly, when you have the advantage of being "ambusher," you are usually dug-in in advantageous position. You don't abandon that position, expose yourself to live fire, and come running towards the "ambushee" so that you can engage in hand-to-hand combat.

This style of ambush was rampant by the VC during the war. Most of these soldiers were untrained villagers and the CO's favored numbers to overpower the enemy. The VC urged a siege mentality even in the smallest of sorties. Khe Sahn, Saigon, and the entirety of the Tet Offensive are proof of this.

    • @tomviktorsson5052

@@pachajonathan LMAO , Khe Sanh , Saigon and the Tet offensive are not ambushes , they were massive siege at Khe Sanh and large military operation/ offensives conducted by North Vietnam commandos and well trained regular army , you dont break into the US embassy and the US military command center of the entire South East Asia with a bunches of untrained villagers. Small ambushes in Vietnam jungle were also conducted by trained and well experienced VC soldiers , they had 40 years of constant war fare experiences, these people were born and died in wars , while the Americans were a bunch of boys dragged out of highschool with minimal training .

The Vietnamese fought because they wanted to have the land re-united, but the Geneva Conference divided it up to North and South which lead to this conflict. The North gained support from communist countries and believed in fighting off anyone who supported the French Colonialists (the original oppressors). The south gained support from the US and other democratic countries and believed in re-uniting Vietnam under a democracy, but morale fell when their president was assassinated by the US government simply because he just wanted to just re-unite Vietnam without French colonial influence.
After all, Ho Chi Minh did ask the US for help against French colonialists before resorting to China and Russia for help, but the US rejected them because they were allies with the French (the original oppressors). In the end, this war was pointless, and millions of lives were lost because of communism and democracy; the Vietnamese on both sides just wanted to reunite the country but the French and Geneva Conference were the root cause of the wars that followed in Indochina.

Mostly true, just 1 point is not complete true.
Ngô Đình Diệm was assassinated because his Buddhism suppression for Catholicism favor, cause disloyal to the troops and officers, he even said to a high-rank officer "Put your Catholic officers in sensitive places. They can be trusted.", ironic, that officer is a Buddhism and many of high-ranking officers are Buddhism due it is most major religion in Vietnam. Diệm banned and suppressed any Buddhism protests in violent (shoot unarmed monks), the peek of crisis is Priest Thích Quảng Đức's self-immolation, this in incident, his heart was intact from flame, thus people believe he become Bodhisattva (as same as Saint), cause more distrust among South Vietnamese armies toward president Ngô Đình Diệm, and the crisis violent is out of control. Finally, CIA decide to put the end to President Ngô Đình Diệm before South Vietnam falling a part without face North Vietnam army.
Next presidents couldn't clear the mess of Diệm's legacy.

In the past, Champa kingdom was destroyed, massarced and was replace by Vietnamese migration from North. And Champa Kingdom is Middle Vietnam, not even South Vietnam. South Vietnam in 17th century is belong to Khmer Empire, then later, because the great drought, Khmer sell Saigon and many land of Mekong Delta to Dai Viet and many waves of Vietnamese migration to current South Vietnam and become dominating race in Middle and South Vietnam.

The combined American and South Vietnamese soldiers died half that of the VC, but the number injured were twice as many as the Vietcong, not as much as a quarter of the VC soldiers died for other reasons (not participating in the war). The job for Vietcong's wounded wounded soldiers is much worse than the US and South Vietnam, that's true because I have thousands of helicopters, curing an injured American soldier, almost then there will be a helicopter to the owner. . get treatment. The Viet Cong left to carry on a stretcher and hike through the rugged mountain forests - which is very dangerous in combat and potentially fatal.

I am Korean and have a relative who participated in the Vietnam War.
There are some people here who do not understand the nature of the war and criticize the cruelty of the South Korean military, so I offer opinion.
First of all, it is a misunderstanding to think that the reason for the Korean military's participation was to make money.
In 1950, South Korea was able to defend its liberal democracy with the help of 16 countries in the free world who fought to prevent North Korean communists from invading the country under a U.N. decision.
As a result, South Korea has become one of the most secure countries in the world today, a powerful economy, military and culture.
South Korea fought braver than the U.S. military in the Vietnam War because it participated in the war under the pretext of reciprocating the help of its allies and participating in the war to defend its allies' liberal democracy, and because it hated communism very much. South Korea sent more than 300,000 soldiers in total, the second largest number after the United States, with more than 15,000 dead and wounded, but killed more per capita enemies than the U.S. military.
The Vietnam War was a very dirty war because of the guerrilla warfare of the Vietcongs who didn't even wear military uniforms. Because of this, there were many massacre of civilians because it was difficult to distinguish between enemies that permeated the private sector, civilians who had internal relations with the Betcong, and civilians who did not.
It was also extensively committed by Vietnamese Communists, but the fault of the losers rather than winners remains in the history of the Vietnamese people.
What we need to understand is that war is inherently cruel and inhumane, so those who started it are the greatest sinners, and history is written on the side of winning and surviving, so it is not all or always right.

@@suoinguontuoitre. You are only talking about the history of the victorious Vietnamese Communists recording and propagating in their favor: the very fragmentary part of the Vietnam War. Viet Cong used tactics that kept themselves from civilians and even did barbaric acts of shooting at South Korean soldiers by hiding themselves behind women of his own kind.
Your statement that there are tens of thousands of innocent civilians killed by the Korean army is different from the history I know, but if true, who committed the remaining 15 million civilian killings? Those who killed the most civilians were their own communists. The victorious Vietnamese Communists just don't want to say it.
This is the same thing that happened in the Korean War and the North Korean regime says the U.S. military massacred many of the North's people, but in fact, communists killed an overwhelming number of civilians. It was the same in the civil wars of the Soviet Union, China, Cambodia, and so on. The communists don't mind how many civilians killed for their victory.
Because Communism, unlike liberal democracy, presupposes dictatorship, so once it is won, it can eliminate all who say their wrongs or control them with fear politics.
South Korea's top military commander, Choi Myung-shin, said, "Don't kill one innocent civilian even if you miss 100 Viet Cong guerrillas." The reason is because he thought that losing public sentiment is a victory that cannot win the war and is not welcomed even if it wins.
Nevertheless, it is assumed that there was an innocent massacre of innocent civilians due to the South Korean military's retaliatory attacks.
The South Korean military did the following to win the hearts of the Vietnamese people, but the following facts were buried by the victorious Vietnamese regime.
During the Vietnam War, the Korean military conducted 3,523,364 public health care workers, 19,640 tons of food, 461,764 pieces of clothing, 6,406 farming tools, 3,319 housing and classrooms, 132 bridges, 394km, 902 taekwondo sessions, 6,848 senior citizens and children, and 2,304 entertainment performances. Even now, the U.N. recognizes South Korean troops as the world's best in civilian operations, with the priority of treating local residents and supporting the people when sending troops abroad.

@Sơn Tùng M-TP Official There is a saying in dog's eyes that humans also look like dogs. And if South Korea is a dog, Communists are like wolves. The average dog does not attack the weak people, but the wolf tries to bite and eat anyone who is weak. So communism should be exterminated in civilized society.Because communists do not allow individual free ideas and individuals can be sacrificed for communism.

@Sơn Tùng M-TP Official I can't interpret your writing correctly because I use a translator, but I can see that you hate Korea. And I can see that you are very narrow-minded and probably Vietnamese. Because you were brainwashed by the communist regime. You can go around cursing Korea as much as you want. Still, the fact remains unchanged: Korea is far stronger than other underdeveloped countries such as Vietnam, to an incomparable degree in economic, military and cultural areas. And South Korea is a U.S. ally that helps and uses each other, not one where either side is victimized unilaterally.

This makes for good movie drama. In real life, an ambush is never carried out like this. The side setting up the ambush would set up crossing lines of automatic fire (like a grid), and a small platoon walking into it would be wiped out. And they would never set up an ambush right next to a booby trap because the mechanical trap would take away the element of surprise. Lastly, when you have the advantage of being "ambusher," you are usually dug-in in advantageous position. You don't abandon that position, expose yourself to live fire, and come running towards the "ambushee" so that you can engage in hand-to-hand combat. It doesn't take a military genius to carry out an ambush on a small platoon. This is infantry 101.

This movie is a horror film made by S. KOREA. Most Koreans have two mindset with the Vietnam war.
      1. We fought to protect South Vietnam from the communist (something happened in Korea too)
      2. We were quite harsh to the veitnamese at that time (as Vietcong were hidden in the civilians).
This horror film is poking that guilt feeling of Koreans. If you see the movie, the gosts who haunt Korean soldiers are the Veitnamese gosts who were suffered during the French colonization and the Vietnam war.
In the end of the movie, all the soldiers except a blind man are all killed and become other gosts trapped in that place.
I JUST WANT TO STRESS TWO POINTS to Vietnamese people.
      1. It is true that there were some harsh war crime committed by some Korean soldiers (undeniable. Even if there were other crimes done by Vietcong and American soldiers, we Koreans do not need to talk about others' fault. We just need to admit our faults)
      2. But, Vietnamese people also should admit that at that time those Korean soldiers tried hard to protect and help South Vietnamese. It is an undeniable history that North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam and there were numerous bad things done by North Vietnam. And it is also true that Korean soldiers volunteered to help South Vietnamese civilians. They built dams for farmers, provided medical services and foods.
      3. The reason why this issue has not been solved conclusively:
      - Korea's perspective: those soldiers are too old and most of the records are not remained, which means it is nearly impossible to proceed meaningful trial and judgment.
      - Vietnam's perspective:
If Vietnam starts to uncover this issue publicly, then the misconducts done by North Vietnam will be also revealed.
      Solution:
Two nations' private sectors should work together openly to fight against toxic nationalism and conflicts. We need to conduct cooperative research on the past history and should share the findings to both peoples. Those researches should be politically neutral if we want those to be meaningful to us.
But.... hmmm I am not sure... both governments are not really interested in this issue. And Vietnamese people, if you want your country not to become like China and CCP, you guys should be concerned about the communist system. I know that there are many smart young Vietnamese. You guys are the future of the Asia, South East Asia and Vietnam. Please be more interested in Liberal democratic system and be less interested in toxic nationalism. Nationalism is like a pandemic in all Asian countries especially in Korea, Vietnam, China and Japan.

@@7721forvalue 2. Vietnam is one nation, there is no such thing as ‘North’ and ‘South’ Vietnam. We were trying to reunite our country. Is it weird that you invade your own country? If ‘numerous’ bad things done by the North and Vietcong (which is south Vietnamese fights against Saigon government) then the Vietcong shouldn’t even exist in the first place and people in the south would not help and hid the soldiers. You protected the Government of the South but NOT the south people.
      3. I explained in the number 2.
