The Aluminum Ball Challenge Started With Mud

- Remember when the internet went wild for people crafting smooth, shiny aluminum foil balls? The so-called “aluminum ball challenge” originated in Japan, where there’s a long-standing tradition of making elegantly polished balls called dorodango-literally translating to, “mud balls.” Let Kiyoko Mikie, one of Japan’s most famous dorodango makers and judge at the art form’s national competition, show you how it’s done.

@@riza.1310 not really....
@tormentor545 Apparently, bringing your own culture to another land is technically ripping-off a culture.
@@riza.1310 Or some japanese man brought over his culture. Like, America is made up of many cultures. It'll be saying souther cuisine is a rip-off of african recipes, when they just used it to spice up the current foods in the sloth. If we are able to take culture just like that, then the japanese will be the one to commit the most of it.

What a thing to like
I remember my dad office use to have one of those
Sadly his company went bankrupt
What if you squish it
does it crumble, Does it melt?
Nope... If it already dried, it will be hard like a clay pot...
I sometimes play (something like) dodge ball with dorodango/mud ball when kids... And it hurt so much... But the ball will be cracked easily after hit something if it was made by pure mud + water mixture... That's why you need dried grass straw to brace your mixture...
You need to throw it so it could crumble...

Honestly I could listen to Kiyoko Mikie talk forever
Honestly I see this as a waste. The amount of tin foil wasted for what? To be tossed in the trash for these stupid challenges. At least mud is better
Better than sucking on tide pods.
Aluminum isn't exactly a scarce resource, being the third most abundant element in Earth's crust, after oxygen and silicon. Being that the mud is likely silicon dioxide and iron oxide, both mud and aluminum balls are about equally renewable. If anything, the hydrogen in the water in the mud being rarer makes the mud more wasteful. Still, they're both very waste-free and renewable ways to make art.
Danielle Spargo yeah, but how is the aluminium processed?
Snowy Mapping
I mean, how much processing goes into the tap water she uses for mud?
Snowy Mapping
Not like the clay she uses for the mud was dug out of her back yard either - it was in paper bags made from trees that were cut down and processed using water and electricity, and driven to her location using gasoline extracted from a mile below the Earth's crust.
As humans, just by being alive we destroy the Earth we live on. What do humans give to this world in return? Well, as far as we know, without us the universe wouldn't have love or friendship, or appreciation for beauty, or as it relates to this video - art. So is it worth it for us to be here? I can't really answer that, but the least we can do is bring some beauty into this world through, for example, beautiful mud balls.
