This is a much better copy than the one I’ve had for years. A bit of trivia - Bonynge asked Beverly Sills for the NYC Opera Orchestra because they were already very familiar with it, having played for her, as well as Olivia Stapp. Jerry Hadley said of Dame Joan, “I asked her how she approached the phrases with agility and high notes. She said, ‘I just say a prayer, Dearie!’ Hadley said that during the Bolena mad scene, she became very calm and focused, knew exactly what she had to do, and didn’t suffer any stress about it.”
I am guessing that the very last aria was played and sung a half step lower than what Donizetti wrote. However, the key tone of the aria is therefore darker, more ominous, and ultimately more tragic, and we get to hear the last note sung up an octave by Joan Sutherland. It is very emotional. Just my opinion.
@@lastupendajoansutherland That's right. I forgot about how the original score was written. My preference got in the way of the facts. The Db key makes the aria sound very dark, tragic, and emotional, and I enjoy 'Anna Bolena' going out on a "high note."
How beautiful! And a young Jerry Hadley, bless his soul. What a wonderful video!

It's sung a whole step lower than originally written 🙂

Thanks a lot! ACould you move the logo to the top of the screen so it does not block the captions?
