  • Although Thailand is known worldwide as a haven for transgender people, its citizens often turn a blind eye to the everyday struggles they face. In her talk, Tonchanok Nippanont speaks from the perspective of an ally for transgender people, advocating for Thai society to truly embrace them for who they are. After attending elementary school in America, Tonchanok Nippanont came back to Thailand and developed an early interest in public speaking. During her time in high school, she was active in many public speaking competitions and was also a member of her school’s student council. Tonchanok is currently a senior student at Chulalongkorn University where she is majoring in Arts in Language and Culture with a concentration in Spanish. She is also Chula’s master of ceremony for international events. She believes that her voice can help make a change and spread awareness to better society. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thai people may not be the most embracing of trans people, but at least Thai culture doesn't have the kind of open hatred that is often encountered in the western world.

Sure but you can ignore the haters, you can't ignore the sad reality that a Thai trans woman can't marry her husband in Thailand nor can she change her legal gender. My wife is a Thai trans woman and I have been waiting over a decade to be able to legally marry in Thailand.

Not the souls, but the bodies and everyone's purpose in life. I know everybody wants to live as nothing matters, but sadly everything does matter. But don't worry about this just live the way you want to, the time will show us what was the right thing to do.

Tonchanok is just introducing CONFUSION. Hijacking a definition and blurring it is not helping. Another term should have been used. For matters of identity she's confusing "treatment", which is a RIGHT, with "facts." That is she's implying, by blurring the terrain, it will help.

If it is being more than the physical feminine traits then why are people calling biological women, birthing person, menstruating people and etc .. being defined by our physical traits. Ain't that ironic?
    Woman means nothing nowadays.

They said gender trenscens the phygical body,
but where is WOMEN'S BODY born to be woman?

      1. Well, guess what? There are masculine women, feminine women, androgynous women... and there always were. So should something that defines women - be something feminine? No, as masculine/androgynous women (whether trans or cis) exist.
      2. Trans women are women. There are not just "feminine men", they are women. In fact, there are masculine trans women - which shows that -> no, trans women are not just simple drag queens... they are women!
      3. Did you watch the same video. "There's more to being a woman than body traits" - now speaks a lot, cuz we live in times when women can do stereotypically "masculine" stuff and still be women. Not all women can have babies (whether trans or cis).
      - all of this shows that there is more to be a woman, than just breeding children. It's just more to that (whether cis or trans) - and if you disagree, you are not only transphobic, but also very misogynistic...
      4. What do all of the previous paragraphs show? Well, that while yes, for you the word "woman" has no meaning anymore... But even though women don't have to be feminine, women don't have to breed, women don't have to act "like women" (i.e.: femininely), the word "woman" still has meaning. Yes sure - there is no codified definition of it - but while, you can be the most butch, masculine, trans woman --> you can still be a woman. Because while our norms, gender, etc... is not binary anymore --> being a woman is not the same as being a man.
So yes. Today, the meaning of the word "woman" is pretty vague... but even if the word would be totally similar to the word "man" (because men can also be feminine, for a reason), and all that being a woman means, is identifying as such -> man will still not be a woman.
What does it show? Well that men are not women, and will never be... Ergo, trans people are valid! Trans women are women, and trans men are men!

Er… as a trans woman you do realize our brains are biological right? Like we don’t have mechanical brain.. if you wanna talk about biology then there’s study that shows some parts of a trans woman brain are actually leaning quite female.

@UCBTKEIhbfzMK_j_em51Pwpw Not even. LGBT people contribute to society also and deserve nothing less than full equality under the law. LGBT couples adopt children all the time and raise them.
That said, those that are not raising children have a ton of time and capital to which to contribute to society.
