As an Indian I think Hambantota was a great investment by the chinese - but then USA/India meddled and started developing Colombo - existing port - although it is congested they further congested it and created more congestion so as to bankrupt Chinese port and make hambantota port. so on one hand colombo was getting over crowded and Hambantota was getting no business - so the Chinese had to take over - basically Indian politicking further aggravted the over crowding of Colombo port and bankrupted humbantota - creating a lose lose situation. where as humbantota was built to create a win win situation where colombo port would be eased and developed to become a more service oriented location - Financial hub and the heavy lifting would be done at humbantota port- and cargo would be moved to humbantota resulting in work creation at the southern side of the island.
As an India i would say to Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh that if China is helping you okay we will see the future, if your infrastructure is growing and modernizing good for you but china remains India's enemy but we love sri lanka so we just gave you a warning of what china has done in Pak so better be smart.
