- Hey Hazbeans! Wanna learn about Sound Design? This is aBehind The Scenes Look behind the hit Pilot Hazbin Hotel that I had the privilege of Sound Designing last year.
Creating Hazbin Hotel's sound space took over 200 hours of work. Every scene has recorded foley, and a dedicated acoustic signature for each main character.
So here are a few key scenes from the pilot without dialogue and music, so you can see just how much we put into the sound design of the show.

14:20 I THOUGHT THIS IS WAS SOOOO CLEVER. Idk why, but I love the idea of his thoughts as a radio flickering. I also really really like the little detail of Charlie’s song in there. I have never really thought about sound design and how cool it was until I saw this video. I really think that I want to get into sound design now.
Yeah, you can do so much with this in terms of easter eggs and covertly conveying in Alastor’s motivation for people that REALLY pay attention

This just made me notice how underrated sound design is. It’s discreet, but it’s giving so much life to the show.
I found myself immersed in the mystery and dreadfulness of hell just listening to these little tidbits! I do hope they put out the full pilot with just the sound effects and voices!

even when they move you can hear their clothes slushing around.you can even hear an on going hum of offline radio when alastor is near or on the screen.

14:19 Now gets me thinking, if Alastors thoughts can be heard from his constant channel changing, does that mean if he dreams when he sleeps(though, if he actually ever does..) does that mean we could hear his dreams while his channels are scrolling?Seems like an opportunity to leak some dirt while sleeping.
Also Nifty has very notable zipper sounds for movement, showing how fast she can quite literally ZIP into action back out of it with ease.

@@ethanwendigo9588 Yeah I think he is more depressed. I don't think Angel even enjoys sex anymore, at the end of the prequel comic when he arrives back to his apartment, there was a box of sex toys with the words "For Fun" crossed out and now says "Work Sh*t" on it.
While I do think there are way too many distracting sounds effects, I absolutely love how creative they all are 💕

there was a hunicast where kennedy said it took him like 45 minutes to an hour looking for one specific sound effect.This man's work is incredible in my opinion
I mean, it's possible for work to be done in vain. The cartoon foley in the show would be more effective with more restraint.
I honestly love all of these!!! The Cherri Bomb and Alastor ones are my absolute favorite, and the Angel one. The creepy caribou in the background, the flash of Charlie's song, and your nod to the April 1st broadcast of War of the Worlds in your videos are godtier. So many cool easter eggs!
The foleywork in hazbin is really incredible, and watching these videos gave me a really solid idea of what I'd like to use in my own work one day. A fantastic job well done, and easily one of my favorite things from the pilot.
This is so interesting. Sound design has always been something I’ve been vaguely aware of, but I had no idea it was truly this complex and layered. Things you don’t normally think about when watching something that make or break the whole atmosphere of a scene. Alastor’s distorted elk sounds are truly haunting to listen to isolated.
Everything aside, and no hate intended, but not every movement or sway needs sounds.
Footsteps, a sway of an arm, or even hair swaying is an exception.
And of course to add some cartoonish spots in considering Viv is inspired by old cartoons, like doing a quote on quote sign, squinting, waving or bouncing.
But after a while it needs to be minimized, considering their all moving so much. But other than that of course I really enjoyed the film and would definitely enjoy seeing the first episode 💕

The sounds were reduced in the French version iirc, it's less abrasive to listen to (though I have to admit the sounds have definitely grown on me)
The sound effects are one of those underrated elements in animation aside from lighting, visual effects animation, etc. It's lesser appreciated compared to songs and BGS, I think. This video showcases creative mixes of sounds that not many listeners know that they're different blends of what we hear everyday. Cherri's bombs and, unsurprisingly, Alastor's are my favorite acoustic signatures. I remember wondering if his "inactive" channel being heard while he was viewing the Magne portrait was his voice. It reminded me so well of Atlantis: The Lost Empire's ethereal sounds relating to its heart crystal.
They're fun to listen to. It's like reading a descriptive paragraph of a character's introduction. However, like other objective critiques and comments I found, having so much sound effects felt too distracting. The reason why lots of acoustic signatures work so well in cartoons like Tom & Jerry is because those cartoons have *little to no dialogue*. Not every finger-wag needs a "poit", especially when the characters are talking. The fast-paced, dialogue-heavy pilot isn't suited for several SFX per minute. It can be overwhelming. No hate, though.

I am just amazed how there is an entire philosophy to each aspect of the production process to create this high quality animation.

8:37 Honestly, I thought the delay when Angel shoves Cherri was a bit too noticeable. She had already gone "oof" before he came close to touching her.
I always found it a little odd and wondered why when Katie touches Charlie, she squeaks a little.. now I understand why ;w; here it makes more sense

I know this is a musical BUT I have to say this and i feel like it would bring alot more to the show in my opinion, I say one thing you should do is not have music unless it is coming from a source in the show. All the these little details like this are AMAZING but you cant realize them. So if Charlie starts to sing and a piano is near but no one is on it don't include the piano until someone starts to play. It would make the musical parts so much more impactful because during those scenes it's a break from the chaos that is hell.

This was really interesting. While I do think the sound effects in the final product could've been toned down, this was really interesting. Not to mention with the character voices gone I was able to enjoy all the sound effects properly without being overloaded. Reading about how everything was done was really enjoyable. Also, it was fun imagining all the voice lines in my head while I watched this. I hope more of these videos are made when more episodes come out.

Another thing that made the Pilot so special to me, the amazing sound design!
Omg, so many details I didn't notice before. It's incredible how much work you put in this, even if the audience didn't recognize the most thing by watching it, like Pentious blimp in the background or small details like the open window at 3:07, or Charlies "puppy"-sounds or the commercials in the background. The fact that everyone has his own acustic signature fascinates me. You really put a lot of effort in it and I'm glad this video exists, so we get an inside in sounds and details, we normally wouldn't recognize.😍

I don't think so, because the first song from hazbin hotel the pilot wasn't even ready yet (the song was inside everydemon is a rainbow ) but in my opinion i liked this "terrifying" hazbin hotel because at the begnning of it to see how the hell just endend go through a tragedy and such. (In this case, the day of extermination).

I love to see how much thought went in to this. Some of it NEEDS to be toned down in the future (some scenes were unbearable to me because I could no longer focus) but for the most part its quite brilliant

This is amazing. I hope someone dissects the IMP episodes like this, too. You don't really get the appreciate the background sound design while watching the show, and this is super neat.
I've actually proposed doing this, but my position as sound designer on helluva boss is a small part of a much larger team.
@@MagusSerling that's kind of too bad, but maybe when they finish rolling out the season they'll be more open to the idea. It's especially interesting to see the notes about the various acoustic signatures for the characters.
Well, either way, don't stop being awesome. Even though we rarely get to appreciate what you sound designers do, our experience is all the richer for it.
Actually, it would also be really neat to see this in the opposite spectrum. How empty the world would be without the background noises and only the characters vocalizing.
I love this because I can still hear most of the dialogue in my head, but its always superseded by intense rustling

I think HH would be a little better if they lowered the music, I loved the sound effects but all that musical stuffed within it makes it a little overpowered
