Using Draft Horses on a Homemade Bale Mover

- It's mud season in Minnesota. At Alan's parent's farm, it's too muddy to use the tractor to feed round bales to the cows. That is where Leonard's bale mover comes in handy! Stub and Stoney can haul hay in the mud where you wouldn't dare drive a tractor through right now. Follow along with Jennifer, as she rides with and does some mudding with real horsepower!

I didn't want the music either, but the wind noise was so bad that's all you could hear. I've since gotten a better camera and no longer put music over the horse videos.
That’s a nice bale mover, I can tell that’s not the first time you’ve done that.
When we had more cows and horses we would roll out 3 to 4 hundred bales a year. Rolling out hay and straw is what it works best for.
What I love about your horses is they are so calm and assured. This comes from having consistent and kind treatment from you.
In one of our videos, Leonard talks about when he got Stub and Stoney. They were wild enough that even the Amish didn't want them. After being with Leonard, Stoney was everyone's horse to learn how to ride on.

Good video could you do a video sometime about all the things your father in law has for the horses to pull. Like carts and trailers stuff like that. That would be a really neat video about all the old time stuff.

What's not to like about this video? Looks like fun. The epitome of the term work smart not hard. Beautiful horses. Would love to do that someday. Your children are truly privileged to grow up around uncommon but great activities. Thank you for sharing and for feeding our country.

Idea for an interesting (at least for me, and I think others??) video. Please have your father in law explain how the harness works. As I understand it the tongue is basically for guidance and the Haines (??) is where the weight is pulled from. Explain how the weight is distributed across the harness and how to steer the horses. Also perhaps a breakdown on what it takes, and how long, to train a team to really work together. He seems like a very knowledgeable fellow to explain all this, as that team works together very good! Maybe an equipment tour to show off and explain the various horse powered pieces he uses?? Anyhow, these horse videos are awesome!
A few miles north we have a Amish community. They have been here for around 20 yrs. Some of them have 2 wheel carts with bale spears on them. I assume they have springs on them to tilt the bale to get clearance. Nice video!!
I’m not sure why but the videos of these horses working is so interesting, different then most modern techniques. Good job on the video

Grew up in the northeast, had a Percheron team we used all winter to spread manure, skid logs off mountain tops, haul loads in muddy fields where wheel tractors couldn’t go This brought many memories driving a team, an enjoyment most will never know.

Logged with a Belgian and a Percheron. They skidded to the yard and back with no one leading them. Gentle giants. I used them single twitching unless I was cutting big pine or hardwood. Then I would team them. Getting ready to log my own property and will be using a horse. Much nicer cut than with a skidder or forwarder. Nice video.

More work involved, but you just don't get the peaceful feeling with tractors as with a well trained team of horses, growing up on a farm with the animals created many a fond memorie for me

What a nice video! That Bale mover looks like something that my grandfather would have made when he lived on a farm in Illinois. He was born in 1895 and lived through the depression and he was always tinkering with things. Draft horses and steam locomotives. I was clearly born in the wrong place in the wrong era

I just recently became a subscriber. I really enjoy these videos of the horses, cows etc. My Dad grew up using horses on my Grandpas farm. He was not overly fond of using horses, and preferred tractor power instead. He didn't talk much about that time as a kid, but he related one story where he would be out using a horse drawn cultivator, and when lunch time came, he said he could stop the horses in the field on a row, and they would be waiting for him when he returned, and hadn't moved an inch. I wish he had told me more about that time in his life. He's been gone for awhile now.

Great video, however the music distracts from the quiet of hearing the horses.

I watched this to see how to pick up a bale behind something without hydraulics , .................but your horses stole the show ! at backing up an articulated " trailer " combination , on command , without mirrors , & they,re animals , ( limited vocabulary grasp ! ) what a marvellous pair of animals . More sense than some humans I could mention . May they live long , & I salute them .

Your horses work and stand really well, so why does the off horse need stricter bitting, or did I not see that right?
As a former pulling horse, he can be really hard on the lines when there's a load.

For a pullung horse he minds great im sure it took some time usually there hear a click and they wanna start..i could see he had a more aggressive gate when they first started out.i didnt notuce the bit but a sungle wire would prob do the trick..nice video,nice roan

Nicely taken and even editing is good. Can stabilize the video by shooting using some tools like gimbal.

i object to he use of blinders on the horses....are they trained or no?do they trus you?believe in you?you're at home not a parade. you are in conrol of he environment. remove the blinders.
They are very well trained, and I would bet, with the trust they have in my dad, they would go through anything, without blinders. But I see no good reason to remove them, they don't hurt the animal in any way!

It's nicer to watch and hear your fine team working without the annoying music.
The reason we put the music in was because of the bad wind noise and the Bale mover had a nails on a chalkboard squeak to it.
Aren't these animals amazing? Thank you for giving them a life & a job they were bred to do. Might be much slower getting the job done but so much nicer.
They are! Of course to Alan, who grew up with them it's nothing special, but I absolutely love watching them!

Uv got 8 hoof prints and 4 tyre tracks ...x2 and u try and tell me a tractor do more damage..😕.. come on ... iv oned horses and worked with them most of my live ... iv drove tractors of all sheaps and sises big and small...😕... helo from IRELAND...
In clay mud, yup a tractor could do way more damage, but it's not so much about damage. His 2 wheel drive tractor won't go through that mud, it's just like a grease when it gets muddy. Hello Ireland!
Use a spring frome where your raighns are to help lift the low bar so its not pulling down on your horses. Of corse the bar dident look that heavy when u lifted it by one hand but still be nice if they dident half to have any weight to lift and only needed to pull and push back
That wouldn't make any difference because the tongue and the cart are all one piece.

Totally agree. When we started we were using our cell phones. We now have a GoPro and that made a huge difference!

Great horsemanship . but why are ye leaving hay out in open ,seems a lot of waste 🤔
There's actually very little waste, the bales are tight and they get a little crust on top that keeps the rest of the bale like new on the inside. A shed would be nice, but it's not a necessity.
@@trinitydairy putting all that effort into making the bales and one or two layers of hay damage isn't productive to be honest.
@@timmyotoolable the cost of a shed and the added property taxes for that shed every year, are not cheap! And the small amount of hay that is wasted is not going to pay for it. The majority of the wasted hay, is from sitting on the ground, and you would have that same problem in a shed, unless you had a concrete floor, and that would add a lot more expense. Whatever is wasted is put back as organic matter on the fields.

Why the crappy music?not needed!
The bale mover makes a terrible screeching sound that is worse than nails on a chalkboard. Working on a video with the team now that will have NO music.

I have 2 Belgium Drafthorses but they look so much different then these ! I never saw the colour that mines are .. i have a ginger coloured with dark ginger manes and on my pfp a blond one with blonde manes . I never saw these colours of mine inrl before .. beautiful horses tho !
