    Great info!!! Those orange, black & white fish are beautiful. One more piece of info is, if you are breeding for profit, swordtails take a LONG time to mature. It typically takes about 5-6 months for the males to show the swords. Nobody want's to buy a swordtail without a sword. So it's not a great "breeding for profit" fish. Keep up the good work!!!!

    • @Lazarusthefishboy
      @Lazarusthefishboy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that's true! The Swordtail that I had featured most of the video is my male that I raised up from a batch of fry, and it took him a good 6 months to develop the sword. Once again, raising the temperature could speed the process, but that would shorten the lifespan of the breeders. You make a good point, these fish aren't great for selling for profit as they're so popular but popular that fish stores already have more than enough to sell, and you don't get too much for them (at least around here). Thanks so much for watching Nygold! Have an awesome day man!

    Hi, I was just wondering if someone here can give advice for me! I'm having aggression problems with my male swordtails, i'll give some background info to be more clearer.
    I bought my male and "female" 5 months ago. Back then I didn't know that I should've gotten a lot of them and that to know wether they are male and female. I only noticed a month ago that my "female" has been growing a sword, then I noticed the gonopodium. Ever since then, that "female" has been harassing my male and continuously trying to mate with him (swimming backwards, getting in front of them to get attention, pecking at the anal part.) So, last night I bought 4 females for the both of them, and yet the "female" kept chasing the male instead of the multiple females around them. I am considering moving the harassed male to a hospital tank, wait until that female-male calms down, and put him back.
    But currently, what should i do?

    • @Lazarusthefishboy
      @Lazarusthefishboy  ปีที่แล้ว

      All swordtails when they're juveniles have a triangular anal fin, until they reach nearly full grown. I had the same thing happen, had a swordtail for a year, it was small and grew slowly, and a year later it started forming a gonopodium. They're just late bloomers I guess. But with your case, sometimes swordtails are super aggressive and nothing can stop them, other times they're sweethearts. This swordtail's a lost cause. If he still keeps acting agro, then separate him, but if he settles down in the next couple days, he can stay in his tank. Good luck Yaykii, and let me know how it all goes! 👍

      Nah, thanks for watching man! Hard water is always best for Swordtails, otherwise you'll come across many problems. But you're covered. Where I live in Australia, it would certainly not be ideal to keep tropical fish outside. The water never really reaches the 22°C mark for more than a couple hours, unless it's an occasional Summer's boiling day haha. But have an awesome day man! 😄

    Dear Lazarus:
    It's my understanding that the convention is to measure a fish from the snout through the caudal peduncle (excluding the caudal fin). The sword on a male swordtail is probably an adaptation which makes the fish look larger, and thus more intimidating, to predators and rival males.
    I haven’t kept swordtails since the 80’s, and then, only briefly. I didn’t realize they were on the aggressive side. But, I’ve even had a female guppy become a bully, when it was the largest fish, in a tank.
    Your, male swordtail is a marvelous specimen. He looks right happy in your, terrific, planted tank.
    Thank you for sharing this interesting and informative video on swordtails.
    All my best,
    Sincerely,
    E. J. Brinegar

    • @Lazarusthefishboy
      @Lazarusthefishboy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, there's different rules with measuring fish. Here in Australia we count the caudal fin when fishing. And swordtails need room to stretch their swords, so that's why I prefer to count the tail with the fish. Yeah, there's always a top dog in a tank mixed with fish species, for example the Chocolate Gourami dogs my Endlers around haha. Thanks for the kind words EJ. The Swordtail I have is a Neon Swordtail. I appreciate you watching man! Have a good one!
