The days when Quake 2 went from 320x240 with slow frame rates to 1024x768 with faster frames rates on my Pentium 120. It was on a 16mb Voodoo 3 2000 pci. I still play Q2 with nglide (3DFX) on a GTX 970 @144 fps lol. That game never gets old.

The first graphics card that I purchased at CompUSA in 1999 for my first new PC was a 3DFX Voodoo 3 2000 PCI (I didn't have an AGP slot).I initially tried a Nvidia TNT card out but returned it because it had butt ugly colors in European Air War (a PC Flight Sim).
It turned my lame what I could afford $399 eMachines etower 300K into a decent gaming machine though I had some other upgrades to do to it.It was no Pentium II or III beast but the 3FDX card made up for a lot of that eMachines gaming capability deficiencies.
I was satisfied with that 3DFX card though. It still works to this day though I had put a CPU fan on the heat sink to cool it down (works so much better that way).
3DFX should have put fans on those Voodoo 3 cards as the passive cooling just wasn't sufficient at the time (you could burn your fingers just touching the heatsink and the graphics card could quickly develop problems and fail because of excess heat due to intense long gaming).
As I remember there was an enormous amount of gaming titles that utilized 3DFX's Glide API and it was so much better, more detailed and much more 3D like than those Direct X API PC games at the time.
If you chose the other non 3DFX chipset cards you were seriously missing out if you gamed during that era.
Both ATI and nVidia had the 32 bit color thing except that very few if any games at that time used 32 bit color so it was meaningless.32 bit color would be more accurate for photography though.nVidia had the highest Direct X frame rates though and ATI had those great feature rich TV Tuner cards.Sad that 3DFX went belly up as they were easily by far my favorite graphics card chipset company.
This episode is just an amaing time trip back to probably my favorite era of computing as I had microcomputers since 1975.

Same memory as myself. My 1st 3D accelerator was a Voodoo 2 12MB from Guillemont. That card really opened up a whole new world to me when it came to PC gaming, I was awestruck by the higher-res, the non-blocky walls in games, etc. MUCH better than the Nintendo 64 when it came to graphics, me, my family, and my friends were all amazed by the Voodoo 2.

I got a great version of NFL Blitz with my Voodoo Banshee but they stupidly tied the game to the card! I couldn't play this game on any other 3dfx card! I still remember how awesome the racing game Whiplash was that came with my first Monster3D Voodoo1 card. Voodoo2 and Voodoo3 were great too. It's a shame that Nvidia won. Especially when they were touting 32-bit graphics even though their cards were too slow to run games in 32-bit color so you ended up running games in 16-bit just like 3dfx.

      @AshtonCoolman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

You are, of course, correct. Before graphics APIs, it took more to get console quality graphics out of a PC. That was in the 16-bit era though. By the time the 32-bit consoles hit the market, PCs were catching up and surpassing consoles. I currently own a Sega Saturn, PS1(2) and several generations of retro computers from the 286 to Core 2 (a hobby of mine). It's amazing to see how fast PCs advanced from the 486 onward.

If your interested, there is a line of PPC Computers/motherboard called the AmigaOne.
The AmigaOne is the PPC successor to the highly popular 68k Amiga line of PC's.
They are build to run AmigaOS and other OS's like Linux.
New motherboards are coming up but they are expensive tho due to small batches being manufactured, but there are also cheaper models like complete Amigaone 500 and the AmigaOS compatible SAM 440.
But non the less, they are completely awesome :)

I didn't found Quake 2 to be a very impressive demonstration of a 3D accelerator here, sure there is a lot nicer color pallet but it wasn't really noticeable here.
Unreal would be allot better to show of, as software rendering misses a good bit of detail like reflection on certain surfaces and the frame rate difference would be allot more noticeable.
But the best would be showing of an S3 Savage running some S3TC levels, would have make his jaw hit the floor :) but hey, 3Dfx is great as well :)

i remember them. I stuck with the brands common in the US. Diamond Monster3D, Monster2. Then V3 was from 3dfx themselves. My Banshee came from Quantum3D. The Quantum3D Raven 16MB card. they made it so that NFL Blitz and Gex only worked on this card! I couldn't play these games on any other 3dfx card!

patg108 I know its a bit late to answer, I missed the notification of the comment in my inbox, but what the heck..
The AmigaOne isn't you would say a clone, but the architecture is very different from the original Amiga series. In the late 90's Amiga were upgraded with PowerPC processors, AHI (an interface like Directsound) compatible Sound hardware and Picasso96 & warp3D (two other interfaces) Graphics cards such as the Radeon 7000.
It became a cluttered mess so in 2002 Amiga inc made the AmigaOne line. an A1 is essentially an Amiga without 68k cpu or chipset but with AOS compiled for PPC (the real deal, no lookalike) and using those interfaces above for hardware. Its more of a natural progression than a clone or replica.
You're right about it not being very popular , but the very dedicated user base is slowly growing.. but yeah, its not going to face off Apple or Dell anytime soon.

22:40 1999 - now imagine 2 years later WTC, wall based on dozens of ~50cm columns made of 4x6.5cm thick steel sheets( precise thickness of most tank's armor) separated 2m away and two aluminium planes "coca-cola cans" going inside and passing trough such structure, including wing tips.. without slowing down, without being crushed, supposedly making substantial damage to "rows of tanks". Its almost as was made in Lighting 3D in just 5 min. Such powerful tool it was ahead of it's time. May it look silly but it was enought to deceive 6bln people into believe in fakery.
