What’s the Scream movie about?
The peaceful town of Woodsboro in California turns into a bloodbath when a masked killer haunts the town. Nobody is safe, as the psychopath stalks victims, taunts them with trivia questions, then rips them to bloody shreds.Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), a young teenage girl, whose mother was killed a year before, becomes the target of the masked killer. Her boyfriend Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) becomes the main suspect along with Sidney's father. Local Tabloid News Reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Woodsbroro's Deputy Dwight "Dewey" Riley (David Arquette) investigate and try to figure out who the killer is and if it's the same person who killed Sidney Prescott’s mother the year before.

It makes me want to cry everytime Casey tries to yell for her mom but can't. Reminded me of one of my nightmares as a kid, couldn't call out to my parents.

It's been said that Drew Barrymore purposefully rejected the role of Sidney.. She thought that her role as Casey would shock viewers more, and make the opening to the movie more impactful.

This scene always kills me, the mothers reaction and the desperation to find her daughter always saddens me. Brilliant film making. The knowing you’re not going to get there is the horrifying payoff.
The only other scene to almost equal this one was sherif Judy and her son Wes in scream 5

Casey's death always breaks my heart for its sheer brutality. Not just because of the actual killing but the psychological aspect as well. No one else throughout the entire movie went through the torture and fear she went through. Ghostface made sure to drag out her death as long as possible to completely f*ck with her mind and terrify her past her limits.
Every time I watch this scene, I begin to tear up when she desperately tries to call out to her parents. I wish I could just go into the movie and save her somehow. Probably sounds dumb but that's how emotional I get over this opening. That justs shows how effective and brilliant it is as an opening!

Ghostface can be quite goofy, but scenes like this are pretty brutal. I also think that the Scream franchise gets more serious & brutal with each new film. Scream really has become my favorite slasher franchise, no doubt whatsoever! While it's fun and entertaining seeing ghostface getting kicked and punched, and being a bit goofy, I do love the more serious/brutal side of ghostface the most. It's probably because it's more dark and heavy. Plus it has more impact than when you'd see ghostface being goofy.
(As of typing this I've only got to watch Scream VI, then I've watched them all)
@@SpaceSloth707 Agreed, Ghostface can be goofy but when it gets brutal like this, it really leaves an impact. I think that's why I like the character so much, you can be be laughing at Ghostface being kicked and thrown about one minute and then be clutching your pillow in fear and anticipation at Ghostface's sheer brutality and fear factor. This is so freaking brutal and one of the best openings. Casey tries to call out to her parents but can’t because Billy crushed Casey’s vocal cords. Also so freaking sad.
Edit: I heard a stab noise when Billy touched her neck. STOP REPLYING TO ME.
hahaha dude your so wrong . look back . he is strangling her neck when she is on the ground . if someone is squeezing your vocal cords and airway super tight if you somehow get away from that person try and scream . itll be hard and painful and the result will be a soft raspy voice . basically your airway or vocal cords will be crushed or close to it . sound wont be able to escape essily. so like a sore throat tjmes 1000 . if he never grabbed her throat then yea she wouldve easily been able to yell out

@Ivan Renard The whole point of her pulling the mask off is to show that she knows who the killer is, and that the attack is personal. Clearly, it's her ex boyfriend Stu.

One of the most iconic opening scenes of any horror film. I just hate how many stupid decisions she makes trying to escape though. Pauses to look at her dead boyfriend, pauses to look at the car that's approaching...Like girl fucking RUN what are you DOING?
Like I can understand to stop to look at her dead BF in shock. But to stop when she sees her parent's car. Like girl keep running. They're just getting to the house and have no idea what's going on, just keep going to try to alert them. It's possible had she did that she would have survived, and her BF would have been the only kill that night since I doubt Stu and Billy would have wanted to deal with killing the parents as well.
She actually doesn't make any dumb decisions.

@aaronsings007 It's realistic, and besides, she didn't go to the front door or upstairs like they expected. Once outside, she would've had a good head start to run or at least hide somewhere as I think she was barefoot, but seeing her parents come home complicated everything for her.

One of the best moments in the entire series. Not only is it intense and scary, but also pretty sad. When Casey's crying for her mom.... 😕 And then her mom's scream. Not sure who the actress is but she did a very good job. Brutal, shocking scene.

The soundtrack is absolute perfection. So is the mother's acting.

if she managed to alert her parents she still would have died as her parents most likely weren't armed and casey had already been stabbed in the neck

I actually think that Steve's death is the most tragic in Scream.
When Casey is asked if she has a BF on the phone, she plays it off like she's single. So he winds up being killed over a girl who cheats on him. Now that's brutal.
I love when she punches him with the phone. I've heard through the years that it was Wes in the costume playing a trick on Drew Barrymore but it looked so real they kept it in. Has anyone else heard this?
No I haven't. Plus I haven't seen any of the Scream movies but have heard & seen bits & pieces of it whenever I'm bored

I also remember her watching the 2nd one the week after while me & my siblings were outside but we ended up going back in & went in another room.

Catching this on tv (somehow uncut on fox) at like 9 years old, seeing her get stabbed in the throat and then trying to call out to her mom but can't, chilled me to my core and made me feel ill. Of course now horror is my favorite genre.

Fun fact. When Casey nails Ghostface with the phone, Wes Craven himself was wearing the costume. He got the mask's eyes altered soon after because he couldn't see through it very well

I got to admit as a toddler whenever I was around three or four years old when I saw this scene in this movie. I didn't actually got scared of ghostface. Because when I was a little toddler actually thought that ghostface was actually a ghost in this movie lol. But overall this scene just never gets old

I remember the first time I saw this movie and how shocking this was. I though Drew was gonna be the star or at least have a bigger role. She was on all the posters and it really seemed that way. But nope. She lasts about 10 minutes. Great setup for the whole series.

Scream's opening is gut punching
When she unmasked Ghostface...the hesitation to include the shaking of the knife it's like "Stu" had a spilt second of remorse but was so heartbroken/enraged he followed through.

That was Billy. Strangling was his thing.
It was definitely Billy. You can see the same actions in the climax of the movie, where he strangles Sid and then raises the knife over his head with one hand to deliver the killing blow.
As for why he hesitated, it was because Billy got off on the terror his victims were in. It’s the same reason why he doesn’t immediately kill Sid and instead emotionally tortures her.
It was Billy alone to kill Steve and casey!

Where did Stu and Billy disappear off to after Casey's parent found her body hanging from a tree? I'm surprised they quickly dragged her body from the front pronch to the treee where they hung her body and then they disappeared very quickly like ghosts.

Scream was the first real horror movie I ever saw, for Media Studies. I was the only one in the class who hadn't seen horror movies too. The teacher realised that I was actually crying in class during this scene, and I was also the only one who admitted that it was a horror-comedy.
Just the same, why can't horror movies kill like this any more? They have to be all 'look away last moment'. In this, Casey's guts are literally falling out of her; her body's still warm. Every time in this scene that the scene looked away was not to protect the audience's tender sensibilities, but to add MORE horror, like hiding the face, or Casey's mom and dad being mere feet away as she gasped for them as her last words.
That's a 90s cordless, you know. They don't work out of house boundaries.
