As usual, you break technical things down in such a simple way, even noobs like me can fully understand. Over the past 2 or 3 years I've learnt so much from you, and I've never regretted any buys I've made based on your reviews....My speed booster s is arriving tomorrow, and CAN'T WAIT!!......Thank you soooo much, for everything.

Cool video but, aren't the Metabones adapters just essentially changing/reducing the size of the Circle of Elimination size to fit the sensor on the four thirds cameras?

I've spent nearly USD 500 in the Metabones Speedboster and I have to say I could have saved that money. It works well only from f / 1: 4 to f/ 1:11.
At f / 1: 2 or less to f / 1: 1.4 only works well in the center of the image. At the sides and corners is very, very soft and provides chromatic aberrations.
The extra stop is useless and is better to spend that money on a good native lens.
I am outraged that Brian Caldwell told me that the problem is the lens Canon FD 50mm f / 1: 1.4. It is incredible .....

The extra-attachment makes sense even on the gh3 or gh4 if you want to put your cam on a steadycam, i tried it yesterday, and without i would have failed :D

Speed booster actually does "light/image compression". As we know lens aperture determines amount of light on the sensor's area. If we project all this light on smaller sensor, we get higher luminosity on area unit. Thus speed booster effect... Passive adapters hasn't light gathering element, thus we loose part of light and also part of image.

What happens if I use the speedbuster with a APS-C lens in GH4?.. I mean..I have a 70D with tokina 11-16mm (APS-C lens).. Using my tokina with the metabone speedboster in a GH4 what do I have in terms of focal length and aperture..?

Look at it this way, the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens is famous for being just as sharp, if not sharper, than the 24-70mm f2.8 L lens. The 24-70mm costs $2k new, $1700used, while the Sigma is $750 used, with the Metabones speedbooster, it's now a $1350 lens, but still beats most $1500+ lenses! IMO it's still a great value, Max Yuryev used it in a wedding video, and it was sharp as hell! vimeo.com/103043835

Please let me know as i am trying to buy an Adapter that carries all AF + Image Stable+ light mettering /=some adapter that actually carries /connects all 11 Semi conductor to do all regular functions of Newest Canon STM EF-S To M4/3 OM'D E-M5MK11 Now i saw the Kipon Adapter but also saw some horrible results where the hunting was super fast and non stop infact the guy called it something like focus madness and lens would never stop to actually focus :/ he was highly disappointed in money spent & horrible results
Anyway PLEASE Let me know p.s not a real big fan of M.B. or anything that adds another window of glass

Hey Tom, this is a great review yet it leaves me with one question. There were two clips in the test footage that had extremely bad chromatic aberrations (2:41 first clip branches against the sky; 4:10 last clip, street light behind tree). Is this caused or accentuated by the adapter, or is it the lens you used?

    Great video, subscribed :-)
I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I just got a GH4 for mainly video use, now i don't own ANY glass at all. So the two options I'm looking at is either getting the Metabones Speed Booster along with the Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 IS Lens, Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 which would cost a total of $2,076 OR i could go with MFT lenses, the Voigtlander 10.5 f/0.95, Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f/0.95 and the Voigtlander Nokton 42.5mm f/0.95. Assuming the 10.5 Voigtlander will cost at least $999, that would make the MFT lenses come to $2,998. That is $900 more than the Speedbooster and the 3 EF lenses.
Which option would you go for ?? Would you advise the speed booster for someone who doesn't have any lenses or would you suggest getting Voigtlander glass which even with the speed boosters help, none of those EF lenses i listed will drop to 0.95 like the MFT lenses.
Your advice would be really appreciated, thank you.

Hi Tom Antos , Does the Metabones Speed Booster work well with the Canon Sigma 18-35mm on the GH4 in Video? I am primarily a videographer and very interested in getting this puppy.

  • @yusripp
    @yusripp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

So if i'm right, The typical calculation for MFT was by the factor of 2. example E-m10 using m.zuiko 45mm f1.8 would equate as canon FF using 90mm F3.6. Am I right? So if I'm using this speed booster on let say Sigma 35mm F1.5 art with e-m10 body it would retain the focal length and aperture at f1.4? so the DOF would be same as the sigma mount on FF. Am I right? If that so, I would need that adapter as i'm DOF freak.

Tom Antos Well I picked up my SpeedBooster S and ended up sending it right back. $600 to control the aperture and a extra stop is a lot of money. I have a lot of prime APS-C lenses with just a 1.25 crop and will only use them in low light wide open a $100 adapter makes more since to me.

So basically if you already pre own the canon or nikon lenses then you should get an adapter, but if not wil the voigtlanders 17.5, 25mm, etc work? I mean you're basically getting only 1 extra stop of light from the adapter+canon lens. Im not saying its not worth it but I dont have Canon lenses lying around and the GH3 was my first camera. What makes me interested is the fact you said these lenses are more sharper with the adapter attached. Also, how does the crop factor work? I know if you have a 45mm with no adapter on the gh3 its equivalent to a 90mm but what if you have say a 50mm along with the adapter? Any help appreciated. I wish I knew about your videos a few years back when I first purchased my GH3.

Tom Antos, I have been watching your videos for a while and I just purchased the GH4 with 12-35 lens and a metabones speedbooster, I would like your professional opinion as I have a few EF prime lenses, I need a good zoom and was thinking about the canon 24-105 f4 and just wondering would that lens coupled with the speedbooster be bad in low light situations? Or should I consider the 24-70 f2.8?

Thanks for your reply Tom...I really appreciate it! I'm wondering about the Metabones Speed Booster and its compatibility with the GH4 - I'm looking for a zoom lens with OIS for the Metabones Speed Booster. I've seen a video about flickering issues with the GH4 when zooming ( aperture fluctuates) with one of the panasonic zoom lenses. My question is this: What zoom lens (Canon EF) with the Metabones Speed Booster would you suggest that will still have OIS ( and all other features) like a regular Panasonic Lumix Micro Four Thirds lens? Thank You

god this looks lovely! i'm totally late to the speedbooster party, but i recently dropped my GH5 with it's 12-60 zoom on, and unfortunatly ruined the zoom (very very upset about this - panasonic are terrible for spares it seems, anyway....), luckily my gh5 was absolutly fine. So it means i can look for more glass, i'm thinking of going down the Metabones 0.71x + sigma DC 18-35 f1.8 art (EF mount). It's really exciting that i might be able to shoot in low light at last. great review thanks!

Can anyone confirm that ''Metabones Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds T CINE Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x'' will work for Bmpcc 4k to the 18-35mm lens? Thanks!

Cool Review, I'm now more keen to buy this with GH5 ;) I have a question though, because it seemed like the speed booster did degrade the image quality, is it just me or is it really the case?

Hi Tom! Im a fan!!! watch all your videos.
i have a question for you regarding the speed booster for the gh4. I followed the link that you had for the speed booster and i notice there is another model. "S" version. im alittle bit confused but arent they the same adapters? they both are priced at $599. so i was wondering which one should i buy? The one you linked was MB_SPEF-M43-BM1 model and the "S" version is MB_SPEF-M43-BM2. if you can help me please thanks.

Yo tom, ive used this speedbooster for a few days now, it works great with all my canon lenses except one issue with the canon 24-105mm f.4 . The IS wont activate for some reason. The IS on all my other canon lenses work great with the speedbooster. Do you know how to fix this? (ofc ive switched IS 'on' on the lens) . The aperture works with the lens, only IS doesnt so the electronics work. On my 6d the IS only activates when you are recording, that triggers it on the 6d, but recording doesnt trigger it on the gh4.

Hi Tom - another informative review! You used the GH4 here - are you still happy with your Sony A7S?? I have a GH4 but after watching your A7S review I'm considering one - it is expensive over here! I'll appreciate your comment!

Thanks for all your informative video. Wanted to ask you your opinion... Do you think Canon glass has better image quality then regular Panasonic glass?

    • @TomAntos
      @TomAntos  10 ปีที่แล้ว

no... depends on each individual lens but in general there are great canon and Panasonic lenses. Only problem with Panasonic is that there aren't as many to choose from. Canon has by far the biggest selection of lenses.

There's also olympus, rokion, slrmagic, and voigtlander who sell lenses for the mft mount. Possibly more. :)

Hi, I was wondering if I can use two speed boosters?
If I have a Micro Four Thirds sensor and a full frame lense, can I use two speed boosters to match the lens light to the sensor?
    Thanks.

Hey Tom how are you man? I hope all is well. I have two questions for you: can I use the Metabones MFT to EF adapter I brought for my GH4 on the Blackmagic Pocket camera? and between the Canon C500, Red Scarlet, and the Blackmagic URSA, which would you recomend for Indie film production? I'm looking to shoot something that can be picked up by the distributors.

Hi Tom, If you were starting fem scratch with only a GH4, and had no glass from any other manufacturer, which speed booster would you get? Nikon? Canon? Basically which company's lens' are the best bang for your buck for a GH4? I only just got a GH4 with the 12-35mm Lumix, and the Olympus 12mm f2.0 prime.

Chad Johnson I think Canon version. Simply because there's a lot more lenses for the Canon EF mount
