He was quite strong but used to get roughed up alot because of his size but never retaliated or swore, hed just have a shot of scotch at half time, some stitches, then carry on. Played on ice, mud snow rain. There were no substitutions. Italian top leagues offered him Ferraris, villas and the millionaire life, but stayed in his home town club his whole career. He played with some good players, but never in a team of greats like Ronaldo and messi do of today. There is very little footage and the the little footage there is of him is nowhere close to showing how good he actually was. People used to arrive in the 10s of thousands and stand like sardines litteraly to watch one player. Elite players and managers have said Finney is the greatest they have ever seen. People think a winger like Beckham, who was also a number 7 for England is a legend.. .. Beckham couldn't even lace Finneys boots, and that's a fact. Sad. People need to know. Your post highlights some of the remarkable things about his career. The kids of today can't be expected to know how good he was (because there is so little footage) but people like Shankly and Docherty and dozens of the greats of that era knew. All the best !
Thanks for assembling this collection. Some of these I hadn't seen and are great examples of the genius of Finney. At 4.26 and 4.33 you can see glimpses of his supreme talent and that's not an exaggeration, either. My dad packed up watching football when Finney retired because nothing compared, so he said. Right or wrong that's how it was for some people. Best regards

Well said, sir and yes you are correct ! The board of directors wouldn't let him go anywhere else, not even abroad. The Italian club, Palermo offered a king's ransom to sign him, but Nat Buck refused. Some people think because he didn't win any trophies, he couldn't have been everything that his legend suggests. Not so, as one of the posters above has said, there's very little film of Tommy playing but there's no doubt he was a sensation. He could put thousands on any gate, particularly at Preston, where they never released team news until just before kick off. Otherwise, if Finney wasn't playing, the gate receipts would be cut in half. He was a footballing genius and a exemplary human being !
Finney had a second goal in that 1948 Italy game. Guess the footage hasn't survived. He was the Football Writers Association's Footballer of the Year in 1954 and 1957 - the first to receive this honour twice.
I guess so. This video was made from "The Greatest England Games 1920-1966" compilation (that I sadly don't have anymore now), so it's quite possible that a lot of footage wasn't included/didn't survive until this day.

This is nice, but they're doing the thing you always see with MLS highlights, where as soon as something cool happens, they swap camera angles and you lose focus and you can't really appreciate what happened. Why??
It's such a shame that all we have now is his heroic FA Cup performance and some highlights from England's games. He really looked like he could anything with the ball, such a sublime technique - even slicker than Matthews'.
British Football is dominated by SKY which ensures the biggest clubs get a large share of International Telent, rather than nurture home-grown . So the biggest English clubs have the money to enable many great continental players to come over for a few seasons. This is great for the Clubs & Club's fans but imo has led to a lack of development of young British players- some of the best of these actually have to go to Spain & Germany in order to get game-time. And the biggest clubs are now 'banking' v.good players who are either bench-sitters but always 'understudies' to the first-team group. Because of the wages they can offer these '2nd-stringers' - most of them are happy with this arrangement.
