If there's one positive to have after his untimely death, it's that he's still remembered to this very day. There's a very small handful of players from that era who get talked about today, and Edwards is still one of them.
My grandad watched the busby babes live, He told me about the beautiful football they played. If the disaster didn't happen United could have easily won 3 or 4 European cups in that era.GGMU
Saw him play as a lad for England schoolboys and again on his full England debut against Scotland.lplus a couple for Man united. Always strong, but, fair play. Opposite goal always a target,no messing about, not afraid to take opposition on. Duncan was admired by fans everywhere. Probably, in my opinion the most I have ever known. Duncan was exactly 6 months older than me.Him October 1st me April I st. Was due to play against him 1951 in school cup match at Dudley ,my school was from Wednesbury. As we gathered at ground to play. I was told Edwards ay playing today mate, good job for yow ( you ) cuz yow would think yow wuz playing against a Mon (man ). Never ever will I forget that daw , incidentally we lost 0 5 .To me Duncan's firm, forward style of play is still with me. I think today's game I think, stop messing about and get going forward. Sometimes the goalkeeper sees more balls from his own players, than the opposition. .

I'm a Liverpool supporter since 1972 but my dad was a manc through & through......he always used to tell me the story, that when he was in the Army,he saw the last game the Busby Babes played in England prior to the Munich tragedy. It was a match at Highbury against a struggling Arsenal and the match ended,if my memory serves me right, in a 5:4 victory to Utd.My old man said it was a superlative performance by both Duncan Edwards & Tommy Taylor. On their fight back to the Rock of Gibraltar they where informed about the tragic accident. My dad was a very hard military man but my uncle said he cried like a baby throughout but when Duncan Edwards passed away a month later,it destroyed him. He always measured greatness if they where at Duncan Edward's level. His 3 all-time greats where Duncan Edwards,Georgie Best and Di'Stefano......a man of exquisite state. I miss you old man.
The main thing I took away from these clips is what a physical presence he was. Always winning the ball back and stronger than everyone else on the pitch.
The images of the game against Real Madrid are unique. Between 0:52” and 0:59” you can see Di Stefano pissed off with Edwards. Even the great star of that era gives a kick with his foot to the youngster
It’s said, Edwards was the complete footballer. He could dribble, tackle, shoot on either foot, header, score and play in any position. I think from the footage, we can see, why he was so special.
Wayyy too young to have ever seen him But with the praise given to him by the few lucky ones to see him I can only imagine how good he was If only that plane didn't crash
Make a visit to Dudley and view his statue by the market place . Saw him play as a 15 year old and his debut for England. Will always remember him. A local Black county lad like myself he was respected by all fans, whoever you supported.Yes,often when visiting Dudley stand looking at Duncans statue and remembering.
My school at Wednesbury was drawn to play Duncan's school at Dudley in cup match. When we arrived a lad from their team said." Edwards ay playing today ,he has to be somewhere else. Good job he ay, it's like playing against a MON . We still lost 5-0. Often thought when I saw him play later for England and Man Utd. Wouldn't that have been wonderful to play against him. There was exactly 6 months age difference between us. Duncan Oct 1st me April 1st. Memories of Duncan will never fade. Dudley, Manchester United,E ngland. What more could you ask for.?
Great vid thanks for compiling this, can appreciate Duncan Edwards reading of the game, timing, strength and distribution. In defense he generally stays on his feet and blocks and doesnt go in for slides or recovery tackles...all due to his excellent reading of the game ability. Its interesting watching some of his advancing forward play from defence...its not dissimilar really to Dutch defending in total football era of 74-78. He looked like a modern footballer ahead of the times
Two footed; world class as a back, half back and a forward. Strong but fair in the tackle, and perfect technique when striking the ball. He's easily in the all-time top 10 of British footballers. He really was that good. The top 10? Bloomer, James, Moore, Law, Best, Charlton, Edwards, Blanchflower, Charles, and Charlton. Unfortunately, no players in the Prem era are good enough. Bit of a shame that but there you go.
My old sports teacher was Gordon Pulley. In the old days they actually taught young lads to properly strike the ball. Anyway, Gordon could properly put his laces behind the ball and he was a Third Division professional. At Arsenal, they had Ronnie Rooke, and he had a hard shot on him. Story goes that at Highbury, Rooke shot toward the United goal, and Edwards not only stopped the cannonball shot with his head but apparently directed it out to the left back, killing the power of the shot and allowing the back to play the ball first time.
My Dad talked about George Best and my grandad talked about Duncan Edwards. Because so little of their game time was captured on camera they’re both mythical creatures of United. Best obviously has more tape but still it only represents a fraction of what he accomplished on the pitch. I’m reading a book about big Duncan at the minute and I’m amazed at how little I actually knew about someone that I’d heard so much about.
That is the one. I'm about 3/4's through and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I do wish there was more footage but I also quite like that there isn't because there is a an aura with Duncan and for different reasons Best (I am from Belfast so Besty means something else to us here)...anyway thanks for the video mate, it is nice to see some of what I am reading. I don't think the videos do him justice especially based on what I read and have heard from my Grandad but I really love seeing his body language & stature because it helps to paint the picture a bit more. There is a level of composure that you only typically see with the greats, like they see the game in slow motion. @@martinh1309
I tell you that in Spain a lot of people like your grandpa remembered very well that team, especially Charlton, Edwards and Taylor. It was a well respected and beautiful team of youngsters and many people were very sad after Munich accident. And in the 60’s, when Charlton was at his prime, the fans in Spain used to compare him with Di Stefano because of their similar way to play football
@@carlossimancas9867 thanks for sharing. I know the great United side of the 50s had a few bouts with Spanish teams like, Real Madrid in 57, and Bilbao the same year. Real and United would have been the main two teams fighting for the European Cup between 58 and 68 if it hadnt been for the disaster. And you're right, Charlton and Di Stefano were very similar, even in appearance. Both great players.
@@MM-mt3rx ive heard good things about that one. I have read his George Best book. I read, Duncan Edwards:the greatest a few years ago, and that was entertaining aswell. For me, Charlton, Best and Edwards encapsulate what Man United is all about.
Looks composed, confident, strong, skilful and appears to read the game way beyond his years. In those days teenagers rarely got first team football, he made his first division debut aged 16! I can't think of any 17/18 year olds these days that would slot into top flight and international football in that position and look so comfortable.
Bobby Moore would probably tell you that aswell. But in reality, i believe Moore would have played anyway as Edwards played most games at left half, not centre back. Jack Charlton and/or Nobby Stiles/Alan Ball would be at a higher risk of never playing for England though.
One could argue he was better, simply given the era of football during that time. Pitches were awful, balls were hard, kits were heavy, boots weren't good, and Edwards still looked world class. Mbappe is a real talent too, no doubt he'll be one of the greatest of all time if he keeps it up.
I think you could have accommodated Edwards and Moore in the same England team, but the player that would have had difficulty being selected would have been Charlton. Edwards was best in an attacking midfield role, and that was the role Charlton played in 1966. By 1970, Charlton was playing in a less advanced role, so Edwards could still have fitted into the 1970 side (he'd still only have been 32 in Mexico!) in a midfield position.
@@martinh1309 England's best ever player was Edwards. I don't think Charlton was. That being said, the top 10 British players of all time are Edwards, Moore, Charlton, Matthews, Blanchflower, Law, Best, Charles, Bloomer and James ... so Charlton is obviously there, but Duncan Edwards, as even Charlton was glad to tell everyone, was a completely different class. The point regarding Charlton in 1970 was that by that stage he was more a holding midfielder, rather than an attacking midfielder in 1966. Thing is how do you accommodate two players of different technical ability in the same side? Edwards could do what Charlton could do, Charlton couldn't do what Edwards could do. So Ramsey would have had a real problem I think if Edwards had survived.
