Just had to say - thank you for posting a vehicle painting tutorial that wasn't just airbrush evangelism, it gets so tiring looking for or asking for advice on this subject and just getting endless "buy an airbrush or you'll never paint a good vehicle ever". Well, this certainly proves that sentiment wrong, it looks great.
THIS! Your techniques produce absolutely fantastic work and prove that you don't need to buy an airbrush to paint vehicles. I'm building the Bandai AT-ST right now and plan on using this tutorial when it comes time to paint. I'll be adapting these techniques to some WW2 vehicle models in the future as well. Thank you for making this video!
Limited palette, simple techniques properly applied , loads of meticulous work and... Voilà! You have a very nicely painted huge vehicle. Excellent tutorial. :)
Fantastic work!! I absolutely adore the AT-ST, been my favourite sci fi vehicle since I was very little! Something about this guy lumbering around on two legs was scary and awesome!
Just getting into SW Legion and your videos have been invaluable! They have transformed my miniature painting not just for Legion, but I'm now using your techniques across the board for mini painting and the results speak for themselves. Keep up the great content.
I know this is 4 years old now, but having discovered SW the second time around (Mando has a lot to answer for!) really getting into the "Legion" models, not to play but to display....your tutorials are perfect for this. immensely impressed this is done without using an airbrush (I have two which get used a lot...possibly TOO much)....excellent work......and thank you!
I came to this video to find reference for an Illustration I'm working on, I'm new to model painting, my friends have a few of these that they've painted.... but I really gotta say I found this incredibly relaxing/therapeutic. Great Content. Excellent Work.
You're a Meastro with those brushes good sir. I'll be painting up my Legion models using your extremely excellent videos as a guide. Thank you for the high level of detail and professionalism. You have a sub for life! Keep it up. Hungry for more!
It is amazing how you put in this work to make a practically ready AT-ST (as comes in the right color) look so good. I've watched some of your other videos of Star Wars Legions too. I just found out about this game at Pax and decided to order it online (just the base game for now), and when it gets here I will be using your videos to guide myself through painting them. I would love to see how you tackle the cover and priority supplies pack, and also can't wait to see how you paint the Rebel Fleet Trooper pack coming in May. Keep up the good work.
I've always loved and have been watching your videos since the beginning but I find it interesting seeing how your techniques and choices have changed over time.
Thanks Chris! I try to approach each mini I paint with fresh eyes, and also like to try new techniques and ideas out as I work. For this AT-ST I really wanted to more closely match the AT-STs from the movies which is why I chose a more controlled level of weathering, and I also avoided the temptation of covering it in rust! :)
I've been watching some of your videos recently because I want to get back into painting mini's. Your pointers and step by step tips have been invaluable! Thank you for doing this series. I'm nearing completion on my AT-ST walker and, while it pales in comparison to yours, I'm noticing things that I could improve on in the future thanks to you! Cheers!
This is perfect, you are a life saver. I was very intimidated by this model, especially since I don't own an airbrush. I'm following your lead, and so far so good!
@@Sorastro Just finished (for now, you know how these things go lol)! I didn't do as much dripping and condensation, but went harder on the metal chipping since I based my force for Tatooine, and I figured the drier climate would make for less humidity and more sandstorms that would erode the paint. Thanks for guiding me through it!

I was given the core box set as a 30th birthday present and have been following all of your tutorials. Almost finished the stormtroopers and as a beginner I don’t think they are half bad :)
Once again, Mr S, thank you for a truly beautiful painting tutorial. I am SO happy to see someone who doesn't rely on an airbrush to paint large scale armour pieces. This is the best painting of a AT-ST from Star Wars Legion I've seen so far. I don't really like the new "Heroic Scale" that minis have taken, but your videos have got me interested in the new SW Legion minis at least, and I'm looking forward to putting your techniques into action on some figures and vehicles in the near future. All the very best Paul
Video is looking amazing, like always. Been following you since the days of your first stormtroopers video from SW:IA and it's always been a real pleasure. Thank you so much for all this, keep up the good work!
So, firstly; just as with the hover tank, I have to say I respect your choice to paint this kit with regular brushes when I *know* that my first instinct would be to reach for the airbrush because this is ideal for taking advantage of the time saving element of airbrushing. This "miniature" (and in this case that term is *very* loosely used) looks like its about the same size and scale of the Bandai kit (and infinitely easier to assemble) which means that's a lot of surface area to paint by hand. Secondly, never have I witnessed, until this video, someone using dry-brushing to create such smooth gradations of highlight; had I not watched this video and only been shown the finished kit, I would have been dead certain an airbrushed was used, that's how smooth it looks. Clearly, you have mastered some sort of sorcery here because, by the very nature of the technique, I didn't even think it was possible to do something like this with dry-brushing; I have to second something that was said below, which is that you've managed to create a piece which could be used for the movie poster.
Thank you so much! I agree, the airbrush sure is tempting when faced with a "mini" like this! However, I generally prefer to use the brush for tutorials that are aimed at a wide audience, most of whom don't have the luxury of an airbrush. I also get a kick out of rising to the challenge of using basic techniques to bring the figure to life - and in this case - creating a look that matches the look from the movies as closely as possible. I actually studied multiple freeze-framed shots from Return of the Jedi to try to pin down the colours and level of weathering, which is tricky as the light shifts quite dramatically during that sequence! The original trilogy of movies was a big part of my childhood and bringing a little piece of that world to life on my table top is a privilege and a joy :)
I been following all of your SW Legion videos to paint my own minis. I had a lot of trouble with the Stormtroopers, my Rebels look good and my ATRT looks very good. I think I can't follow this one though. :(((((((( don't have the skill xDDDDD. Congrats for your paint, your music, and your videos but for me that I'm starting it is very frustrating hahaha xDDD. Keep working this way!!! Thanks!
Hello! Awesome tutorial, as always! Will you go on with the SWL painting series, there is a lot of add on´s i would love to see beeing painted by you... :)
Thanks so much! I have another SWL video coming out later this month, and don't forget that I have quite a few PDF guides over on my website covering additional figures from the line: sorastro.com/2020/12/24/luke-skywalker-operative-pdf-painting-guide/ :)
I saw Legion in my local model shop recently, and the biggest units they had were like the starter set speeders and such. Now I'm eager to learn if some of the hovertanks used by the CiS are in yet o_o
Congratulations for your site and your videos. They are sensational.Tell me please how do you do your little shrubs. This little final touch is beautiful Thx for all
@Sorastro's painting Do you intend to do a video about the airspeeder? I just finished painting one (after several years without painting!) and I must say that your videos helped me quite a lot in avoiding completely butchering the mini. Anyway, keep up the awesome content.
Thanks DeuZerre! Yes - I finished the Airspeeder video a while ago; I just need to wait for it to get approved before I can release it which hopefully won't be long :)
Love your videos, even for someone new to painting I can follow your tutorials. Is there any chance you will be doing the land speeder soon? Also any plans to cover the Test of Honour minis from Warlord would be so interested to see your views on the colour schemes. Keep up the great content, do you have a link to your patreon page?
Thanks a lot Jonathan! I really appreciate the kind words. I have almost finished the T-47 Airspeeder video so watch out for it soon. I'm afraid my schedule is too full at the moment for me to take any new projects on so won't be covering ToH any time soon. Here's my Patreon page: www.patreon.com/Sorastros :)
I don't have the Mechanicus Standard Grey spray, but used the grey Vallejo spray. It seems that one is quite a bit lighter. Do you have any advice? Should I paint a base layer of Mechanicus Standard Grey (base paint) over it first, or can I just continue like in your video?
Do you have a link to the air brush you use. I am based in the US. Do I need a compressor with the air brush? Im not sure what I need to buy. 100% filter face mask? Thanks
Hi, not so used to the citadel range, can you substitute the Citadel Air: Mechanicus Standard Grey for the spray primer. Are they the same grey as I know the sprays are not always a match to the paints in some lines. I think the grey looks like a great match and don't know a Vallejo has a good air equivalent. Thanks loving the videos!
Hi Tom! I'm pretty sure all of the different versions of "Mechanicus Standard Grey" should have the exact same tone, however I don't think the "Air" paints are primers as such so you still need to prime either with a spray can or something like one of the Vallejo primers for airbrush :)
I actually learned a lot from this series of painting star wars legion and i will be using it to paint my minis. But i have to ask, how did you make your forrest ground texture?
Thank you so much! I think I just used "fine turf" by Javis, but there's a more thorough explanation in one of the earlier episodes (the AT-RT perhaps?) 😀
Excellent video, as always. I often paint miniatures to my own colour schemes, but think I will definitely be using this tutorial as a guide. I’ve achieved similar results with dry brushing my 40K vehicles, so glad to see it can be done with Legion too. When are you planning on releasing the Airspeeder video?
Thanks a lot Kurttkrueger! I'm going to being work on the Airspeeder video soon so it should be landing some time later this month, depending on how long the approval process takes :)
Amazing video as always. Based on my dry brushing experience with the AT ST from Imperial Assault, I’m clearly not doing this right. Do you have a video explaining the important points of dry brushing?
Good question. Well, on the AT ST for IA, I tried using a wide flat brush my kids had lying around. I don't know if I didn't let the base coat dry enough or the paint on the brush was too wet. But it went on very sticky and unevenly - not really making the kind of dry brush highlights I was looking for. other times, I end up leaving too much paint on the model.
I'm trying to figure out where the smallest pieces actually go. They are little small bolts and it isn't clear on the instructions and there doesn't seem to be any place for them
Hi there! I'm afraid it was a few years ago when I painted this, and I can't really remember the assembly details..! But if you ask on the Star Wars: Legion Facebook group you'll probably find the help you need :)
So I'm painting this model using the a flat 6 brush like you do for the base and I'm getting brush strokes after thinning down the paint. Maybe it's the video but I can't see brush strokes on your model and you are applying it really aggressively. Are they covered up with another layer or is their a technique I'm missing?
Hi Adam! It could be that you need to thin the paint just a little more, and/or perhaps you just need to stretch the paint a little further, so it almost becomes like applying a dry brush.. 😀
Thank you Mihai! I am painting the Gloomaven minis but don't have time in my schedule to create videos for them unfortunately. I am however producing some PDF guides for them for my patrons over on Patreon :)
As I did with all my other units, this will be my guide. Small question about stage 2; did one of the paints have a metallic shine? I dont have a gray tone with a shine, should I add some silver?
Hi there! No I didn't add any metallics apart from the edge highlighting/chips because I wanted to capture the matte look from the movies. You certainly could do though - like I did with my AT-RT in Episode 3 :)
I am still interested in where you found that palette, it seems like the perfect well size and number (especially when mixing several colors) but I can't find one close to that anywhere. Great tutorial as always!
Thanks Ethan! Oo that's a tough one.. I have both and I find myself using a lot more of the VMC paints than the VGC because the colours are generally more natural and subtle, but it does depend on what you're painting of course :)
You make great vehicle tutorials but I’m greatly disappointed by the lack of interiors in the Star Wars legion vehicle sculpts. Hopefully they update some of these to include them, they’ve certainly proven that they can create good interiors with some of the newer releases.
what color would you recommend for the barricade pieces. I want mine to be dark but i also want to do alot of blaster burn marks and battle damage so it cant be to dark.
Hi Kendall! You could actually use the exact same recipe used here for the AT-ST. You could freely adjust the brightness by adding black or white to create an overall darker or lighter look of course :)
this is a weird connection to make, but your layering technique here is almost the exact same method i use when digitally coloring artwork. start out with a wide brush and lower the opacity and lighten the color with each layer.
So I started this afternoon and for the base coat I mixed Mechanicus grey about 4 to 1 with Zandri Dust like instructed, but it looked a lot darker than it does in your video. In fact, it looks a bit darker than the prime coat of mechanicus grey I started with. I don't understand what happened.
Hi there! Hmm that does sound strange. The Mechanicus Standard Grey from your pot should be an exact match for the Mechanicus Standard Grey from the spray can, and adding Zandri Dust can only make it lighter.. did you perhaps use Army Painter's Uniform Grey instead as your primer?
Hi Jake! No I'm afraid the music from this episode was written fresh for the Legion series and is scheduled to appear on album No.3 (Album No.2 will be coming around July and will feature my fantasy-themed music) :)
Just had to say - thank you for posting a vehicle painting tutorial that wasn't just airbrush evangelism, it gets so tiring looking for or asking for advice on this subject and just getting endless "buy an airbrush or you'll never paint a good vehicle ever".
@@Sorastro sorry, i meant how did you make the battlemap, did you print it on something?
Ah, OK! That's just a neoprene mat by Deep Cut Studios 😀
@@Sorastro Thank you!
No problem! 😀
Great work. I'm not liking legion, but this could make a great model for my desk
Cheers Mike! It does indeed make a nice display piece doesn't it! :)
Amazing video as always. Based on my dry brushing experience with the AT ST from Imperial Assault, I’m clearly not doing this right. Do you have a video explaining the important points of dry brushing?
Hi Andy! Can I ask what is the specific issue you are having with the technique?
Good question. Well, on the AT ST for IA, I tried using a wide flat brush my kids had lying around. I don't know if I didn't let the base coat dry enough or the paint on the brush was too wet. But it went on very sticky and unevenly - not really making the kind of dry brush highlights I was looking for. other times, I end up leaving too much paint on the model.
YEAH! its here :)
Yehaa! :)
Amazing Stuff!
Thank you Colin! I'm glad you liked it :)
Hi, do you ave the intention of painting Gloomhaven? You are so very good!!
Thank you Mihai! I am painting the Gloomaven minis but don't have time in my schedule to create videos for them unfortunately. I am however producing some PDF guides for them for my patrons over on Patreon :)
Amazing. Truly amazing! Ever thingking of showing some alternative colors schemes? Like you did with rebels?
Thanks Xinperor! I'd love to try some alternative schemes but currently have just one one AT-ST :)
I wasnt specific talking about ATST. Just any model would be cool :D Stormtroopers for example to avoid clone wars( put intended)
Thank you for the reply, grand master Sorastro! ;)
Great music
Thank you so much Larry! ☺️
I am still interested in where you found that palette, it seems like the perfect well size and number (especially when mixing several colors) but I can't find one close to that anywhere. Great tutorial as always!
Thank you! There's a link to that palette in the video description :)
What’s the name or brand of putty you use right before priming?
Hi! That is White Tack by UHU :)
Great video! If I were to get one of the big full set boxes. Would you suggest the VGC or VMC paint set
Thanks Ethan! Oo that's a tough one.. I have both and I find myself using a lot more of the VMC paints than the VGC because the colours are generally more natural and subtle, but it does depend on what you're painting of course :)
Sorastro's Painting I think the games I will be painting will be Blood Rage, Rising Sun, Zombicide Black Plaque, Imperial Assault, and similar games
And this would not be the end of my paint collection just what I would use for a little till I can afford and need more paint.
You make great vehicle tutorials but I’m greatly disappointed by the lack of interiors in the Star Wars legion vehicle sculpts. Hopefully they update some of these to include them, they’ve certainly proven that they can create good interiors with some of the newer releases.
Thank you Connor! I agree, their vehicle sculpts have really come a long way.. 😀
I use an air brushing so what priming color should I use?
Hi Maxine! I think any mid-tone grey would be fine :)
How would this looks with black panel lining I wonder?
what color would you recommend for the barricade pieces.
+Sorastro's Painting Thank you for the response im looking forward to your snowspeeder video its tge last thing i have to paint.
No problem! I've almost finished the next episode.. :)
Is there a possibility to use the music for my Pnp campaign?
this is a weird connection to make, but your layering technique here is almost the exact same method i use when digitally coloring artwork. start out with a wide brush and lower the opacity and lighten the color with each layer.
That is interesting actually! :)
Hello There!
OK now that was fast! :)
haha it’s my first time!
What ratio did you mix the Zandri Dust and Celestra Grey for the highlight tone?
So I started this afternoon and for the base coat I mixed Mechanicus grey about 4 to 1 with Zandri Dust like instructed, but it looked a lot darker than it does in your video. In fact, it looks a bit darker than the prime coat of mechanicus grey I started with.
I don't understand what happened.
Hi there! Hmm that does sound strange. The Mechanicus Standard Grey from your pot should be an exact match for the Mechanicus Standard Grey from the spray can, and adding Zandri Dust can only make it lighter.. did you perhaps use Army Painter's Uniform Grey instead as your primer?
is the music in this vid on your Starborn album? If so, I'll buy, if not, where can I buy it?
Hi Jake! No I'm afraid the music from this episode was written fresh for the Legion series and is scheduled to appear on album No.3 (Album No.2 will be coming around July and will feature my fantasy-themed music) :)
You got any of them T-47 Airspeeder Painting Videos?
Hi Rich! It’s on its way.. :)
What matte spray do you use for protection on this or other models?
Hi there! I use Testor's Dullcote th-cam.com/video/1OVnCFq1j04/w-d-xo.htmlm13s :)
that large flat brush is an awesome way to base coat! how long have you been using it, sorastro?
Hi Frank! I've had that brush for quite a long time; it just hasn't been used for a while as I haven't painted anything quite this large in ages :)
