So very, very refreshing to listen to a PROFESSIONAL JOURNALIST NARRATE ABOUT MT. ATHOS. His respect and attention to detail and kind explanations are to be respected and admired...a RARE RARE TRAIT nowadays where journalists take political and personal disrespect to others beliefs. Thank you. From a 🇺🇸 orthodox.

@@lapacesiaconvoi yes, we Eastern Orthodox make three fingers into the Father Son and Holy Spirit; with the remaining two fingers into the palm, the Theotokos womb, for two natures of Christ, human and God.
As we say to the Father Son and Holy Spirit, we touch our forehead, our abdomen, our right shoulder to our left shoulder, crossing to our heart - the Cross.

As an Eastern Orthodox woman, I would love to visit Mount Athos.
But I completely understand why the monks need to be separated from mothers and children; it is a place of Prayer, meditation and a place our Lord resides.
The world especially, the Orthodox world, need the monks to pray for us; we need their prayers.
    Christ is in our midst.

@@llabronco sorry Alex, you must be thinking of the roman catholic church.
In Orthodoxy there is no grave sin, no original sin; there is only ancestral sin which all humans inherited from Adam and Eve.
Orthodox Baptism is to unite us with Christ and the Orthodox Church, we participate in our first Eucharist from that day, baptism, and the rest of our lives.
Orthodox do not believe as romans believe, baptism is to wash away original sin; especially since Orthodox do not believe in original sin.
Orthodoxy is the ancient original True Apostolic Church.
Lord Jesus Christ Son of God have mercy on us.

I had never even imagined such a holy paradise of peace and sacred meditation of monks communing to be with God and with hosting pilgrims and students, keeping their own acetic purities and care for a truly treasured well occupied quieted wonderful relief for a group also apparently worthy to be there!
It's a pure Haven safe from all the outside world.
Practically another world of its own.
These are some of the world's best people and trustworthy men to be known!

I love that they just devote to God (Jesus Christ) and angels against the Satanic one , living there in blessed efficiency and see to maintain heavenly graces that actually can be said to literally protect the noble focus uninterrupted, and no need,I presumed, for the subjectivity of the United Nations /Heritage Site or UNESCO to intervene!

I was in Mt Athos in 1976, travelling thru Greece, was encouraged to make an effort to visit. I got a 5 (or maybe 7) day visa from the British consulate (I think) in Thessalonika, and after a week in Chalkidiki drove to the port, where the ferry was leaving as we arrived. It was a memorable time, I was just out of college, and unaware of what I was getting into, stayed at several monasteries, What Bob Simon failed to say, is that beyond no human females, there are no females animals either (not sure how you can possibly control rodents, birds or flies), no cows, no ewes, just bulls and rams.

Liked the clip. 60 Minutes is typically interesting. Found the reference to Lent Holiday and the fact that all sorts of businessmen showed up --- besides the pilgrims. I am reminded of the legend of how Maatkare Hatshepsut became Pharaoh ... it turns out that there was a religious celebration that required a bunch of BCE priest types to walk in a line while chanting. Hatshepsut attended these activities... she called out words to the effect that 'if the Gods wanted Hatshepsut to be the next Pharaoh then whole line should take two steps back and then continue on in their walking.' And low and behold that is what apparently happened. A Religious Miracle of a sort that was likely arranged and paid for by her or her family prior to walking in a line or referenced chanting. Religious folks with obvious feet of clay and their hand out. With this in mind one might wonder, given a historical background, if there were the vending of "miracles" while being filmed by CBS' 60 Minutes?

And the monk is right...all true Orthodox prepare daily for their eventual death. We do not fear death as we pray we will be worthy to be with Christ and the Holy Theotokas. At our funeral, it is an open coffin. The icon of the resurrection and the Apostles creed are placed in our hands and a blue ribbon on our forehead. Our loved ones prostate themselves 3 times in front of our coffin, asking forgiveness for any offense we caused . Then we kiss the ble ribbon on the forehead and often the hands of our departed. It never ceases to amaze me how many people I meet who have great fear of even attending a funeral and are appalled at giving our loved ones a last kiss goodbye before the coffin is sealed.

It isn't true that they are the only ones who use Byzantine time. They do it in Ethiopia as well, with 12 o'clock at sunrise and sunset, and they also use the Coptic calendar, based on the Julian one, with 12 months of 30 days each, and 1 month of just 5 days. No leap year, so they are by now some 8 years behind the rest of the world.

Nevertheless they were not allowed to enter the monastery, but housed in a hut by the beach for three days. Many women found sanctuary there during the war, but they are reluctant to tell the story so they can keep the narrative of the «άβατον» true. Their funds, though little is needed as they raise their own food and purchase few things from the rest of the world, is primarily earned by individual donations by people. Especially during previous decades and centuries, it was quite common for people that died with no close relatives to donate their fortunes to the church or monasteries like that in Mt. Athos. Additionally, they harvest herbs and produce wine, herbal oils etc. that they sell in order to ensure a steady income. Some monasteries can even rent some of their land (or buildings) outside Mt. Athos in order to earn more funds. In short: Donations, small scale goods sale and rents.
