Nah, 55 kids is a red flag. It doesn't make me think of her as a saint, it makes me think there's something sinister going on. Plus...She ran several "mega churches?" Nope! I can tell this woman is shady before even hearing the whole story.

Despite how dark this story is, I can‘t help but marvel at how good you are at telling stories! You use so many details, put emotion into every character and use even mundane story sections to build tension. Everything about it pulls you into the story and makes you want to hear more.

In fact normally i cant watching or listen to any storytelling channels AT ALL so to me goes to show how brilliant she is. What a story. This woman and her husband ruined children's lives or deeply traumatized them; yet, they were seen as pillars of the community and religious leaders. Scary.
Sadly, that happens a lot with religious leaders. And I'm not knocking religion in general, it's just that more often than not, it seems that successful, famous religious figures often turn out to be total dirtbags.
A lot of power seeking predators (of all kinds) put themselves into position to run religious, political, law enforcement and other leadership roles. Most decent people do not want to have people under their control.
As a Brazilian, this case is as insane as Stephanie tells it. Edit: Flordelis' adopted kids were mainly picked up by Flor from very poor people, who had no conditions to raise a child. In Brazil, we call these "Brazilian adoption", because it's not formal and not done though the State. But it's said that she used to come up to homeless women and just force them to turn their kids onto her care.

Childhood is so so important. Flor was groomed, surrounded by horrible things at a young age, and grew up to be an abuser. Anderson was groomed by Flor, and then became either an abuser or an enabler of abuse. It really is a cycle. 😢 Good lord, what a case!
Yeah... but not going to sympathize because they were caught in the cycle of abuse. They has the choice to abuse and did it. They as adults knew it was wrong... but still chose to abuse. I have no sympathy. It is called a cycle of abuse but one can break that cycle.

I certainly don't condone neglect or abuse, but as far as how they viewed weird and (to us) unthinkable actions, I wonder. Did they know it was wrong the same way we as outsiders do, or were they just a product of their environment? An environment that acclimated them to horrible things. An environment that made abuse very familiar. A lot of times familiar means something you're ok with even when you shouldn't be. I've learned that people who grow up in dysfunction (like myself, narcissistic abuse) don't usually know just how bad it is until they are exposed to how healthy people live. I'm still unraveling my own abuse and neglect in my 30s. The point is, the life we have as younger people defines the starting point in our adult years. It's totally our responsibility to be decent citizens though. In this case, the trauma and dysfunction is just multiplied. All those children are affected by this. How are they gonna deal with it? Are they going to be abusive, or are they gonna wake up and say no more? I think I have a little sympathy for the younger versions of Flor and Anderson, but I mainly feel for the sadness of the situation as a whole. I'm glad this kind of thing is being talked about. Maybe we'll have less of it, if more people take it seriously.

To me, the traumatized children from SA is more heartbreaking than the murder. It's like everyone pays attention when someone gets murdered but when a child is hurt, it's not treated that seriously.
Flordelis' whole bloodline seems like it had failed to pass down love in the most basic way. She was truly an extreme case of passing down generational trauma.

This woman used to be seen as a hero. They even made a movie about her life and the Christian community LOVED her. I even respected her myself. But the second her husband died and I saw her “crying” at his funeral… I turned to my mom and said “she did it”. Something about it felt so off to me even with no information about what had actually happened, I just couldn’t believe a single second of her act.

As a Brazilian i was shocked to see Flordelis's picture on the cover. There are not many Brazilian cases that gain international media's attention, so thank you Steph, Mr. Mango and everyone else that helped making this video and gather information. As always your way of telling stories is amazing! One thing about favelas is that being on a "gang" in favelas sometimes is the only way they have to afford food and living, people there are just trying to have a better life, they have dreams and aspirations just like everyone else. There are some movies, books and songs that can portrait that really well! If im honest rich drug dealers and gangs that arent based on favelas are really more dangerous than the people on favelas, mostly because its always really rich and powerful families, politicians, so basically people that wont have to deal with consequences. There is also a lot of discrimination when it comes to that because the police will just shoot anyone(literally innocent kids playing on the streets) with the excuse that they mistook the kid with someone dangerous or that they were holding guns, these police officers and etc never had to deal with the consequences of their actions. There are many sad cases on that and many more. Brasil is an amazing place, but just like any other country there are many many social, political, system and religious problems. For me personally, there are 3 heartbreaking that stay on my mind and traumatize me til this day. Eloá's case, Isabella Nardoni's case, Von Richthofen case as well. The more you dig in the crazier it gets... All of these have either a documentary, movie and/or series about.

I think you got it all mixed up. The one who exposed Sandoval and Flor predatory relationship was the daughter of the child bride. The child bride died because she was beaten to death but the baby survived. The baby grew up with Flor as step sisters.

Oh, this one is a crazy ride. I met them personally and boy, those kids were a mess. For context, big churches in Brasil have sort of a inner circle thing and the more prominent members tend to go around visiting each other's churches. Back in my church days, I had the chance to meet them at one point. I had contact with mostly the younger ones, and let me tell you, those kids had it rough. For those wondering how they maintained so many kids, two things (allegedly), one, there were select ones who got a good treatment and the rest were resumed to rice, pasta and hot dogs. Two, the church pays for them, many donate directly to the parents to help out. My former church also had another family with 50 children (this one hasn't been found guilty of anything as far as I know) and they got a lot of monetary and food donations, they did just fine. And if I may, the Evandro case is also quite the roller coaster ride. Maybe check it out.

Stephanie PLEASE, talk about the "kiss nightclub case", it happened in the city of Santa Maria in southern Brazil, in 2013. It is an absurd case that shocked the entire country, a fire in a nightclub that killed 242 young people and left more than 600 injured. it was an extremely terrible and bizarre case, the nightclub had several structural problems and many other problems that, if they had been resolved earlier, would have prevented this tragedy, this case even became a 5-episode Netflix series, I recommend watching it too. The worst of all is that to this day those responsible have not been arrested. I believe that with you commenting on it it will become better known internationally, thus ensuring that the victims and these tragedies and injustice are not forgotten.

when I was 29 years old, I unofficially adopted 3 teenaged girls who were being neglected and abused (I live in Colombia) they are now 23 years old and I'm very proud of what I did but it was so hard that I can't even imagine how impossible it would have been to have even one more child under my care, not all people who adopt like that are out to hurt, but this woman is evil encarnated

Its possible if done correctly but guess what? It never is. I would have made it my top priority to find them all the closet to perfect homes as possible...but that's not what people do. They go to poor communities and get this narcissistic believe that only THEY can save them. There's a specific type of people who do this alot. They leave Europe or America and go literally searching for children in poor countries and play this holier than thou bullshyt that they are doing GODS work...the care in foster care is extremely non existent anymore
I mean, if we take this situation in a vacuum without all the other nasty stuff, this is probably the best option for those kids sadly. It’s better to be in a house with 55 siblings and 2% of the paternal care you need than to be out on the streets with nothing
People from "normal" families would be shocked at how many of the people with a high social status /and a lot of respect /and a spotless public persona - LOTS of pastors, politicians, doctors, nurses, spiritual gurus, famous scientists, etc.. are horribly abusive to their children. Unfortunately, and sadly, child abuse isn't rare. And it is *usually* accompanied by a public facade that is maintained by threat of violence or other abuse. And children learn this YOUNG. Most before they can even express themselves at all.
I sadly have personal experience with this phenomenon of crazy Christians adopting kids only to abuse them. I grew up in the church and met this family seemed normal on paper, they had daughters I was really excited to get to know as there weren’t a lot of girls my age at my church. But suddenly the family started attended church without their adopted daughters. After people asked questions they stopped attending church completely. Fast forward 4 years and they are all over the news for keeping those poor girls I had tried connecting with in cages in the basement of their house. It became a huge case in my town because they were homeschooled and people rightly pointed out there was no way to check in on these adopted kids because of this “homeschool” set up, and they could’ve been rescued sooner if they had been enrolled in public school where them going missing could be reported. My church at the time couldn’t have reported them missing and we had no clue. It’s a sad case and still upsets people. The homeschool community fought hard against government check ins, but how else do we stop these types of people?
Just want to say if the church had suspected anything, they could've reported them missing. There was nothing stopping them. Homeschooling is illegal in most other countries because of things like this.

In Brazil is also John Of God. All connected to Oprah Epstein and Clintons as their spiritual advisor. Man made a baby factory to sell to adoptive parents. Many kids with No IDs. Arrested around the time Trump began the arrests of Epstein, Ghislane, Allison Mack, Keith Raniere of NXVIUM cult.
The primary reason why this channel is great is because it overcomes language barriers in order to tell the story of cases from Korea, China, Brazil, etc... The rest just regurgitate American cases which are not even that noteworthy a lot of the time.
This is a big reason why I wish people would stop telling adoptees they should be grateful for being adopted. You don't have to dig deep to read about more tragedies that involve adoptive children. We're not a monolith and just because there may be good adoptions, doesn't mean we should neglect the bad ones. Please stop telling adoptees to be grateful and assuming they were adopted into a loving home. It isn't always the case.
Exactly...especially ones that seem good from the outside. My husband is a case...I hate to say it but I really think my mother in law was infertile bc she just wasn't exactly built with maternal instincts. When the child she adopted had mental health issues she just couldn't handle it. I really don't think she handled it the right way. Let alone the lack of maternal love and safety he experienced, but of course I do believe some was genetic. But no one in her family ever had problems with mental health. It sucks bc he is still close to and talks to his parents but when he tells me stories of his childhood I have to be like "that isn't punishment or discipline that is abuse like bad abuse..." like getting whipped with a belt till he was purple because he wouldn't eat a certain food bc he has ocd and sensory issues. He ended up getting into alot of legal trouble and fell into addiction , and they never took any credit, in fact, they hated him and blamed him more for "ruining their good family name" ...didn't mean to trauma dump but its something that still has me angry to this day and they never really acknowledged what they did wrong Our son has OCD too, and I'm just relieved that I can raise him with love and empathy and do what they couldnt.

Having 55 kids is honestly such a HUGE red flag. It’s impossible to take care of that many children without there being any form of neglect :(( I’m surprised no one really questioned it.

this case was INSANE when it dropped… i’m brazilian and i love the way stephanie covers true crime cases, she’s always so tactful and respectful! there are some crazy true crime cases that happened in brazil and it would be very interesting to see them told from our MMB’s pov if she’d like to cover more of them (like what happened in boate kiss or isabela nardoni’s case, for example)

This might be the most insane case I've ever heard. Just... madness from the top down. And the way it goes back generations is really the crux of it all. Flor, her mother, even her mother's mother most likely, none of them had a chance to grow up sane and healthy, to the point that they could not even conceive of providing better lives for their own children. And their society was in no condition to do anything about it. Horrendous. Unthinkable.

Just adding some context, she had 55 kids within years, some older and some younger, so not every kid lived with Flor anymore. The first generation of kids she adopted really saw her as a mother, so at the begining there was probably a real care and love for the kids, they were her favorites and this was pretty clear inside the house. Really loved this episode! I'm usually careful to watch people from outside talk about Brasil, since there's a lot of misinformation, but this video is so well done!

In brazil there's this thing called "brazilian adopting" in which a family takes a kid in to raise, and sometimes the biological family is ok with that. But also it was very common for families to take poor girls in to be their maid. Other families see this as a way to adopt a child without having to go through the legal system (which is very thorough to make sure the parents are fit to raise a child, you have to go through a six month course and then submit to be considered legally able to adopt, and only then you'll be put in line to adopt a child fit for your profile). So Flor's case wasn't seen as strange cause this kind of informal adoption was/is very common here. Which sucks. She was seen as a foster mom.
It makes me sad that women take in girls they're not related to be their little house slaves. I say that because I study U.S. history and see parallels.

In the Philippines it's the same taking in girls as maids. I remember having had one at my cousins' family and she was early 20s, when I was a teen. All kids called her "Ate" because she was practically our sister.
This case shook the whole country, every time a new detail of it was made public, we would get more and more shocked. Brazil is a very religious country, so Christians are seen as the good people here, after this case, the police uncovered so many other cases of the same nature, like João de Deus and so many other Pastors, because the victims knew it that this time the would be heard. Obs: Since Brazil is a very Christian country, any religion outside of the Christianity is seen as "Dark Magic", and most of them being African rooted religions, I think the reason of this prejudice is mostly racism, because those religions were brought to Brazil by the enslaved people. Flor de Liz doing things that could be considered "Dark Magic" was so mind boggling for a lot of people, because she was an evangelical pastor, and the evangelicals are known to be one of the most extremists Christians, at least here in Brazil, they even attack other Christian religions, like Catholicism, they already kicked and broke the image of Nossa Senhora Aparecida, the Brazilian representation of Virgin Mary, live on national television. Obs 2: The some favelas are so neglected that, the crime lords/drug dealers are the ones that take care of their population, give food, clothes, toys, throws parties for the community, they went as far as, stealing Yellow Fever vaccines because the government weren't sending those vaccines to their community. Brazil is indeed a crazy country, we make no sense sometimes, the "bad guys" sometimes are the "good guys", and the "good guys" sometimes are the "bad guys". I don't live in a favela, but I live on a neighborhood that was once the hill and later became asphalted, and it was once seen as a dangerous neighborhood because of a drug dealer, everyone feared him outside our neighborhood, but in reality he was a pretty nice guy, he just looked scary, our house was never robbed because he studied with mom and was friends with my family, when he died the whole neighborhood went to his funeral. I love my country 🇧🇷♥️
The notion that all drug dealers are bad is pretty silly. Some people are good people who deal drugs. I’m glad to hear you nuanced perspective on how these crime groups did good for their community, it makes sense considering the members of the gangs would be members of the community, so of course they want to give back. Definitely not a problem exclusive to Brazil where people turn to organised crime as a source of security and income. A lot of these gangs and drug trafficking would be lessened if people were just given liveable conditions, as a poor person myself, not as bad off as people in the favelas obviously, but it does affect my mental health and leads to me to take medicinal drugs. I think the world is very united on some things, and how it affects Brazil is incredibly nuanced and interesting. Amazing to learn 💖

My thoughts exactly! That case really deserves to be talked about on this channel. I was so young (12) when it all happened but to this day I remember the absurdity behind the decisions that caused that tragedy as the media coverage started explaining stuff like the ceiling material, the equipment the band used that caused the fire, how even the way the exits were build contributed and, worse of all, the stories about how many people died in the bathroom suffocated by the toxic gas... And to people unfamiliar with the story, I think the numbers say a lot: 242 died and 630 were injured. The victims were mostly young adults who were just going out to a night club to have fun and watch a show. This case happened more than 10 years ago (Jan 27th 2013) and to this day families are grieving and still demanding justice.

I'm Brazilian, so I want to make some commentaries to help understand the story better: - Flordelis was not admired and believed by the whole country, not even by it's majority. She had all this fame with a part of the evangelicals of Brazil, but they are not the majority over here. Brazil is a country of Catholic prevalence, and she was not saw as "mother of the nation" or anything like that to the great majority of the country, she was actually saw with some suspicion, as are all pastors that run for political offices over here. She was even mocked sometimes because she used those wigs and had those "I'm a saint" airs. The great part of the population didn't really believed her stories about facing gangs and saving children. She made, and still makes, propaganda as if she is and was way more important than she really ever was. Before the crime, very few people outside of Rio de Janeiro state would know who you were talking about if you asked them about Flordelis. - About that stories of Flordelis' mother and witchcraft, take them with a lot of salt. Their source is a mix of evangelicals wanting to declare Flordelis was not a "true" Christian, Flordelis herself wanting to mud the waters of the investigations and pure dynamic of stories becoming more extraordinary and flamboyant with each telling. - The 55 adopted children were not legally adopted, they were what we call here "filhos de criação" (children by raising, loosely translated), abandoned children or children from parents that do not want or can't created them and are taken informally to live on your house. There are two things that happen then: some people really adopt those children and create them as their own, just like a legal adoption; some people, though, take those children to have a servant without pay. They are raised cleaning the house, making the food, taking care of the biological children and living without any of the privileges of the biological children. This second kind is suffering on the last decade or so a strong movement to denounce and end it, but there are still cases, unfortunatelly. - That stories about the movie are what Flordelis says, not the truth: the actors and actresses were barelly know here, they were paid normally to make the movie and the movie was a flop here, on this part a think there was a misunderstanding of the research team. - The penalties, as Flordelis' 50 years, are only for show, because Brazilian law limits to a maximum of 40 years of prision, so all the years past that threshold will not be served. Besides that, all of them that are first offenders, if they keep "good behaviour" (basically not kill anyone on jail), they will leave on parole after 1/6 of the penalty, less than 7 years. This is Brazilian law, unfortunatelly. - The general opinion here is that she killed Anderson because she wanted control of the money and because she already had a new boyfriend, that Anderson and her abused the children and that the couple were involved on a lot of other crimes too.
How is it even legal to adopt 55 kids? There is no way you can give equal love and attention to 55 kids!

Childhood is so so important. Flor was groomed, surrounded by horrible things at a young age, and grew up to be an abuser. Anderson was groomed by Flor, and then became either an abuser or an enabler of abuse. It really is a cycle. 😢 Good lord, what a case!

I certainly don't condone neglect or abuse, but as far as how they viewed weird and (to us) unthinkable actions, I wonder. Did they know it was wrong the same way we as outsiders do, or were they just a product of their environment? An environment that acclimated them to horrible things. An environment that made abuse very familiar. A lot of times familiar means something you're ok with even when you shouldn't be. I've learned that people who grow up in dysfunction (like myself, narcissistic abuse) don't usually know just how bad it is until they are exposed to how healthy people live. I'm still unraveling my own abuse and neglect in my 30s. The point is, the life we have as younger people defines the starting point in our adult years. It's totally our responsibility to be decent citizens though. In this case, the trauma and dysfunction is just multiplied. All those children are affected by this. How are they gonna deal with it? Are they going to be abusive, or are they gonna wake up and say no more? I think I have a little sympathy for the younger versions of Flor and Anderson, but I mainly feel for the sadness of the situation as a whole. I'm glad this kind of thing is being talked about. Maybe we'll have less of it, if more people take it seriously.

As a Brazilian i was shocked to see Flordelis's picture on the cover. There are not many Brazilian cases that gain international media's attention, so thank you Steph, Mr. Mango and everyone else that helped making this video and gather information. As always your way of telling stories is amazing! One thing about favelas is that being on a "gang" in favelas sometimes is the only way they have to afford food and living, people there are just trying to have a better life, they have dreams and aspirations just like everyone else. There are some movies, books and songs that can portrait that really well! If im honest rich drug dealers and gangs that arent based on favelas are really more dangerous than the people on favelas, mostly because its always really rich and powerful families, politicians, so basically people that wont have to deal with consequences. There is also a lot of discrimination when it comes to that because the police will just shoot anyone(literally innocent kids playing on the streets) with the excuse that they mistook the kid with someone dangerous or that they were holding guns, these police officers and etc never had to deal with the consequences of their actions. There are many sad cases on that and many more. Brasil is an amazing place, but just like any other country there are many many social, political, system and religious problems. For me personally, there are 3 heartbreaking that stay on my mind and traumatize me til this day. Eloá's case, Isabella Nardoni's case, Von Richthofen case as well. The more you dig in the crazier it gets... All of these have either a documentary, movie and/or series about.

Oh, this one is a crazy ride. I met them personally and boy, those kids were a mess. For context, big churches in Brasil have sort of a inner circle thing and the more prominent members tend to go around visiting each other's churches. Back in my church days, I had the chance to meet them at one point.
I had contact with mostly the younger ones, and let me tell you, those kids had it rough.
For those wondering how they maintained so many kids, two things (allegedly), one, there were select ones who got a good treatment and the rest were resumed to rice, pasta and hot dogs. Two, the church pays for them, many donate directly to the parents to help out. My former church also had another family with 50 children (this one hasn't been found guilty of anything as far as I know) and they got a lot of monetary and food donations, they did just fine.
And if I may, the Evandro case is also quite the roller coaster ride. Maybe check it out.

Stephanie PLEASE, talk about the "kiss nightclub case", it happened in the city of Santa Maria in southern Brazil, in 2013.
It is an absurd case that shocked the entire country, a fire in a nightclub that killed 242 young people and left more than 600 injured. it was an extremely terrible and bizarre case, the nightclub had several structural problems and many other problems that, if they had been resolved earlier, would have prevented this tragedy, this case even became a 5-episode Netflix series, I recommend watching it too. The worst of all is that to this day those responsible have not been arrested. I believe that with you commenting on it it will become better known internationally, thus ensuring that the victims and these tragedies and injustice are not forgotten.

Its possible if done correctly but guess what? It never is. I would have made it my top priority to find them all the closet to perfect homes as possible...but that's not what people do. People from "normal" families would be shocked at how many of the people with a high social status /and a lot of respect /and a spotless public persona - LOTS of pastors, politicians, doctors, nurses, spiritual gurus, famous scientists, etc.. are horribly abusive to their children. Unfortunately, and sadly, child abuse isn't rare. And it is *usually* accompanied by a public facade that is maintained by threat of violence or other abuse. And children learn this YOUNG. Most before they can even express themselves at all.

I sadly have personal experience with this phenomenon of crazy Christians adopting kids only to abuse them. I grew up in the church and met this family seemed normal on paper, they had daughters I was really excited to get to know as there weren’t a lot of girls my age at my church. But suddenly the family started attended church without their adopted daughters. After people asked questions they stopped attending church completely. Fast forward 4 years and they are all over the news for keeping those poor girls I had tried connecting with in cages in the basement of their house. It became a huge case in my town because they were homeschooled and people rightly pointed out there was no way to check in on these adopted kids because of this “homeschool” set up, and they could’ve been rescued sooner if they had been enrolled in public school where them going missing could be reported. My church at the time couldn’t have reported them missing and we had no clue. It’s a sad case and still upsets people. The homeschool community fought hard against government check ins, but how else do we stop these types of people?
Just want to say if the church had suspected anything, they could've reported them missing. There was nothing stopping them. Homeschooling is illegal in most other countries because of things like this.

The primary reason why this channel is great is because it overcomes language barriers in order to tell the story of cases from Korea, China, Brazil, etc... The rest just regurgitate American cases which are not even that noteworthy a lot of the time.
This is a big reason why I wish people would stop telling adoptees they should be grateful for being adopted. You don't have to dig deep to read about more tragedies that involve adoptive children. We're not a monolith and just because there may be good adoptions, doesn't mean we should neglect the bad ones. Please stop telling adoptees to be grateful and assuming they were adopted into a loving home. It isn't always the case.

My husband is a case...I hate to say it but I really think my mother in law was infertile bc she just wasn't exactly built with maternal instincts. When the child she adopted had mental health issues she just couldn't handle it. I really don't think she handled it the right way. Let alone the lack of maternal love and safety he experienced, but of course I do believe some was genetic. But no one in her family ever had problems with mental health. It sucks bc he is still close to and talks to his parents but when he tells me stories of his childhood I have to be like "that isn't punishment or discipline that is abuse like bad abuse..." like getting whipped with a belt till he was purple because he wouldn't eat a certain food bc he has ocd and sensory issues. He ended up getting into alot of legal trouble and fell into addiction , and they never took any credit, in fact, they hated him and blamed him more for "ruining their good family name" ...didn't mean to trauma dump but its something that still has me angry to this day and they never really acknowledged what they did wrong
Our son has OCD too, and I'm just relieved that I can raise him with love and empathy and do what they couldnt.

Having 55 kids is honestly such a HUGE red flag. It’s impossible to take care of that many children without there being any form of neglect :(( I’m surprised no one really questioned it.

This might be the most insane case I've ever heard. Just... madness from the top down. And the way it goes back generations is really the crux of it all. Flor, her mother, even her mother's mother most likely, none of them had a chance to grow up sane and healthy, to the point that they could not even conceive of providing better lives for their own children. And their society was in no condition to do anything about it. Horrendous. Unthinkable.

Just adding some context, she had 55 kids within years, some older and some younger, so not every kid lived with Flor anymore. The first generation of kids she adopted really saw her as a mother, so at the begining there was probably a real care and love for the kids, they were her favorites and this was pretty clear inside the house.

In brazil there's this thing called "brazilian adopting" in which a family takes a kid in to raise, and sometimes the biological family is ok with that. But also it was very common for families to take poor girls in to be their maid. Other families see this as a way to adopt a child without having to go through the legal system (which is very thorough to make sure the parents are fit to raise a child, you have to go through a six month course and then submit to be considered legally able to adopt, and only then you'll be put in line to adopt a child fit for your profile).
So Flor's case wasn't seen as strange cause this kind of informal adoption was/is very common here. Which sucks. She was seen as a foster mom.
It makes me sad that women take in girls they're not related to be their little house slaves. I say that because I study U.S. history and see parallels.

In the Philippines it's the same taking in girls as maids. I remember having had one at my cousins' family and she was early 20s, when I was a teen. All kids called her "Ate" because she was practically our sister.

I'm an American living in Brasil 33 years..and have never heard of this story! Wow!!
This case shook the whole country, every time a new detail of it was made public, we would get more and more shocked. Brazil is a very religious country, so Christians are seen as the good people here, after this case, the police uncovered so many other cases of the same nature, like João de Deus and so many other Pastors, because the victims knew it that this time the would be heard.
Obs: Since Brazil is a very Christian country, any religion outside of the Christianity is seen as "Dark Magic", and most of them being African rooted religions, I think the reason of this prejudice is mostly racism, because those religions were brought to Brazil by the enslaved people. Flor de Liz doing things that could be considered "Dark Magic" was so mind boggling for a lot of people, because she was an evangelical pastor, and the evangelicals are known to be one of the most extremists Christians, at least here in Brazil, they even attack other Christian religions, like Catholicism, they already kicked and broke the image of Nossa Senhora Aparecida, the Brazilian representation of Virgin Mary, live on national television.
Obs 2: The some favelas are so neglected that, the crime lords/drug dealers are the ones that take care of their population, give food, clothes, toys, throws parties for the community, they went as far as, stealing Yellow Fever vaccines because the government weren't sending those vaccines to their community.
Brazil is indeed a crazy country, we make no sense sometimes, the "bad guys" sometimes are the "good guys", and the "good guys" sometimes are the "bad guys". I don't live in a favela, but I live on a neighborhood that was once the hill and later became asphalted, and it was once seen as a dangerous neighborhood because of a drug dealer, everyone feared him outside our neighborhood, but in reality he was a pretty nice guy, he just looked scary, our house was never robbed because he studied with mom and was friends with my family, when he died the whole neighborhood went to his funeral. The notion that all drug dealers are bad is pretty silly. Some people are good people who deal drugs. I’m glad to hear you nuanced perspective on how these crime groups did good for their community, it makes sense considering the members of the gangs would be members of the community, so of course they want to give back. Definitely not a problem exclusive to Brazil where people turn to organised crime as a source of security and income. A lot of these gangs and drug trafficking would be lessened if people were just given liveable conditions, as a poor person myself, not as bad off as people in the favelas obviously, but it does affect my mental health and leads to me to take medicinal drugs. I think the world is very united on some things, and how it affects Brazil is incredibly nuanced and interesting. Amazing to learn 💖

It would also be helpful to include visuals when there are so many different people in the story. It can get convoluted remembering all the characters.

My thoughts exactly! That case really deserves to be talked about on this channel. I was so young (12) when it all happened but to this day I remember the absurdity behind the decisions that caused that tragedy as the media coverage started explaining stuff like the ceiling material, the equipment the band used that caused the fire, how even the way the exits were build contributed and, worse of all, the stories about how many people died in the bathroom suffocated by the toxic gas...
And to people unfamiliar with the story, I think the numbers say a lot: 242 died and 630 were injured. The victims were mostly young adults who were just going out to a night club to have fun and watch a show. This case happened more than 10 years ago (Jan 27th 2013) and to this day families are grieving and still demanding justice.

As a Brazilian who watched on TV all of this being unveiled, it’s interesting to rewatch through someone’s else perspective, especially as an outsider’s point of view. Stephanie as always a great storyteller! The way she tells almost makes me forget I already know about it 😂❤

No way! How did I not know she'd covered a case from my country? What? This story is insane and stomach-churning! In retrospect it's inexplicable how Flor de Lis was able to keep all of this under wraps for as long as she did.
You are my favorite storyteller of things that I should not know. You really cover some of the darker corners of humankind and you do it with such care.
The way she lures in the kids remind me of the pleasure land in pincchio since it made kids go there thinking it was all fun and games but it turns out the opposite, maybe that just me.

I'm Brazilian, so I want to make some commentaries to help understand the story better:
- Flordelis was not admired and believed by the whole country, not even by it's majority. She had all this fame with a part of the evangelicals of Brazil, but they are not the majority over here. Brazil is a country of Catholic prevalence, and she was not saw as "mother of the nation" or anything like that to the great majority of the country, she was actually saw with some suspicion, as are all pastors that run for political offices over here. She was even mocked sometimes because she used those wigs and had those "I'm a saint" airs. The great part of the population didn't really believed her stories about facing gangs and saving children. She made, and still makes, propaganda as if she is and was way more important than she really ever was. Before the crime, very few people outside of Rio de Janeiro state would know who you were talking about if you asked them about Flordelis.
- About that stories of Flordelis' mother and witchcraft, take them with a lot of salt. Their source is a mix of evangelicals wanting to declare Flordelis was not a "true" Christian, Flordelis herself wanting to mud the waters of the investigations and pure dynamic of stories becoming more extraordinary and flamboyant with each telling.
- The 55 adopted children were not legally adopted, they were what we call here "filhos de criação" (children by raising, loosely translated), abandoned children or children from parents that do not want or can't created them and are taken informally to live on your house. There are two things that happen then: some people really adopt those children and create them as their own, just like a legal adoption; some people, though, take those children to have a servant without pay. They are raised cleaning the house, making the food, taking care of the biological children and living without any of the privileges of the biological children. This second kind is suffering on the last decade or so a strong movement to denounce and end it, but there are still cases, unfortunatelly.
- That stories about the movie are what Flordelis says, not the truth: the actors and actresses were barelly know here, they were paid normally to make the movie and the movie was a flop here, on this part a think there was a misunderstanding of the research team.
- The penalties, as Flordelis' 50 years, are only for show, because Brazilian law limits to a maximum of 40 years of prision, so all the years past that threshold will not be served. Besides that, all of them that are first offenders, if they keep "good behaviour" (basically not kill anyone on jail), they will leave on parole after 1/6 of the penalty, less than 7 years. This is Brazilian law, unfortunatelly.
- The general opinion here is that she killed Anderson because she wanted control of the money and because she already had a new boyfriend, that Anderson and her abused the children and that the couple were involved on a lot of other crimes too.
