Meine freundin hatt mich immer beladen mit Schmuck, Armband, Ringen, Kette... Und ich musste immer deutsch cool bleiben von Sie. Geile zeit war das. Das kann jeder der Englisch fließend kann in 2 Jahren wenn er es wirklich will ... und selbst wenn man nicht gut in sowas ist und ne unpassende Muttersprache hat sollte man es in 2 bis 3 Jahren fließend können, zwar nicht Akzentfrei aber man sich unterhalten Leute die nach 10 Jahren nur gebrochenes Deutsch sprechen wollen es ganz einfach gar nicht, die schaffen sich eine Blase in der sie Leben und interessieren sich nicht für das Land in dem sie leben ...
@Pustekuchen naja da gibt es auch in England ecken die es schwerer haben werden ... Amerikaner neigen dazu oft mit anderen Amerikanern sich zu unterhalten, Telefonieren oder Gruppen zu bilden was schlecht ist und je mehr das wird um so mehr baut man sich seine eigene Blase ... ich denke das ist ein Problem mit der Mentalität, Britten bringen sich in eine Nachbarschaft ein, Amerikaner kennen oft viele Nachbarn gar nicht ... eine Amerikanerin sagte mal, das dass größte Problem was Amerikaner mit den Deutschen haben wenn die hier leben ist, das die Deutschen nichts von Smalltalk verstehen und auch wenig von so etwas belanglosen halten ... ich denk das kann man so stehen lassen ...
Nicht vergessen, im Urlaub immer ein Handtuch dabei haben, nicht wegen "Per Anhalter durch die Galaxis" sondern um die Sonnenliege zum deutschen Hoheitsgebiet zu erklären! Ein Komedian hat mal gesagt: "Der große Fehler der deutschen Führung in Stalingrad war, sie hatten nicht genug Handtücher, damit hätten sie sich den Rückweg freihalten können!"

Our German authorities seem very modern, flexible and fast, listening to you... interesting that it is worse in other countries, cause we often blame our authorities... yes, football is still much more natural than in the Premier League... I often met English fans and tourists in stadium at my homeclub Mönchengladbach (which is VRR too...), they love our atmosphere in the Germans stadiums... we played vs Man City 4 times in the ECL, and it felt quiet and heartless... the only superb atmosphere I noticed in Britain was in Glasgow when we played Celtic... I live in Berlin, you have public transport around the clock. In the night it may take longer, walking longer, but possible. Some years I was in the Region Hannover district, in a village. There was a bus every 60 minutes, on Sundays every 120 minutes and also in the nights from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday there were two busses in the night for suburbs like me. Driver asks for the stop you want and plans the route individually. Also it wasn't not expensive to take the train to Berlin - when I booked early undercrowded trains, it was between 19 to 29 EUR each direction and took 2 h main station to main station.
Reason 3 is enough to get me over full time! I have been trying to learn German and used Duolingo for a year but no app prepares you for listening to an actual German speak. I’m back at it trying to learn again but I’m still little more than a beginner
Hold on, it's worth it. Learning a new language opens a door to a complet new culture. I've learned two foreign languages and in both countries the first few days were hard. But you'll get used to the spoken words and it becomes much easier.
@@rolemodel04 that's true, at school you are learning vocabulary and grammar, but speaking with natives will teach you the language. We already thought about holydays in England to reanimate our speaking skills. I'm ok with slow and clear spoken English (most of the TH-camrs are adapted to the abilities of German understanding skills), but a bit scared of English people in their natural habitat, not to mention Scotts, Irish or Welsh (sorry, but what ever you speak, this is not the language I've learned at school).
Try Michael Thomas language course! Very efficient. And start watching movies in German with English subtitles. You’ll be surprised how quickly you will catch on!

People that care about the language easily learn to speak like a local! Thats why americans always wondered why i sounded like an american! Well Taxi driving in times as the american Post was still there was nice! Most told first words in my Taxi after i asked: "Where do you wanna go?" was always: "You are the first american that i see driving a Taxi in Germany!" No i am not, my grandfather was american and my aunt married an american, both i never talked to, maybe i just have it in my genes!

that's the first time i hear that from somebody not from germany: bureaucracy (or however you spell that) is functional in germany. but it's true, mainly. if you know what you need for your request (and you'll get that information online or by asking via phone) things normally work out the way you were told they should .... but "normally" leaves enough space for diversion ...

I believe, we have (as far as I know) the best transport-system at the Ruhr. (I have been to Tokyo, and it is good there, but overrated.) ... there is private public treransport all over germany, the difference to the rest of the world is that the local government decides what kind of transport is needed and than they ask for bids from private companies. alot of those buses you use are private buses in service of the local government.

Do you really feel that the German public transport ist that much better than in the UK? I was living in Gravesend, Kent (just outside the London orbit) and I was working in London. So I used public transport all the time. It is maybe a bit more expensive than it is here in Germany, but it is as good. The Kohlenpott works pretty well with public transport but I am living in Cologne now and often working in Düsseldorf and I can't see how this is any better than in England. Another thing I experienced in England (totally anecdotal of course) when I moved there as a good German obviously one of the first things I did was visiting the town hall to find out what paperwork is necessary to live in the UK. The employees there were extremely nice and helpful. "oh you live in a street with residential parking only, wait we help you to get the necessary paper". "What paperwork do I need to open a bank account?" "Just show them a letter from BT with your name on it." Like really useful help for somebody new to a foreign country. I have the feeling that in Germany whenever you go to an Amt the people there are in a bad mood. It was completely different in England. People are so unbelievably friendly.
Detailverliebt some good points there, the local councils in Blighty can be very helpful but I think here in Germany you have to ask them about it, sometimes they are not very willing to give out info unless asked.. The transport system I think is great, one ticket and I can use the S & U-Bahns as well as the trams.. couldn’t do that in my neck of the woods in Blighty, I know in London it’s different..
Kein Zwanni für nen Steher! - means a Ticket für the Standing Area in the Football Stadium should bist more than 20€. The Fans are fighting for it for years and still are proud about this.
Public transport here suuuucks if you dont live in a big city. I have to drive for 40 minutes in the next big city and it costs 10 Euros even so its only 25km just because the route goes trough 5 different zones which means the price and routelength goes up.

Wir brauchen im städtischen ÖPNV unbedingt das Londoner Modell. Die Bankkarte an den Leser halten und schon hat man ein Ticket gekauft. Das ist so bequem und einfach. Gerade gibt es in Bonn eine Feldstudie dazu. In UK kommt man auch ohne Bargeld klar, da jeder Pub die Bankkarte akzeptiert. Ich werde das Relegationsspiel von Bochum gegen Gladbach nie vergessen. Ihr starken Bochumer habt uns damals beinahe aus der Liga geworfen. Mit viel Dussel haben wir gewonnen. Das Bochumer Stadion erinnert mich immer an den guten alten Bökelberg. Ne super Fankultur habt ihr Bochumer! Das Bermudadreieck kann auch einiges!

When I mention strategic industries I'm talking about industries which are important for the country's economic development, e.g. energy, public transport, telecommunications etc. All these sectors are largely privatised in the UK.

Great about Germany, as a Person with a Schwerbehindertenausweis (Prove of disability) you can almost travel for free. Stucked elevators, delations etc sucks, because we have to plan the ride to get supportat the Stations etc.
Nicht ganz: ich hab auch einen Schwerbehinderten Ausweis und ich muss ganz normal meine Fahrten bezahlen. Man muss schon eine Geh-Behinderung haben oder eine Art von Behinderung, die es notwendig macht, fahren zu müssen. Zum Beispiel: Epilepsie oder einen Herzfehler. Wenn man bei der Fahrt auf Hilfe anderer Menschen angewiesen ist, kann auch eine Begleitperson kostenlos mitfahren. Aber das alles muss im Ausweis vermerkt sein.
I find transport here quite expensive, but it all depends on what country you compare it with. I preferred free transport in Tallinn :) And bureaucracy for me here is also a nightmare, smth like it was for u in Spain - different ppl tell me different things and it's way easier to personally come and get Smth than wait for email, post or phone call... Maybe it's easier for you because u don't come from post soviet country(that is never going to be part of EU) like me idk :)

As a political science student who at least partially blames neoliberal ideology for a myriad of issues ranging from the rise of right-wing populism to our inability to tackle climate change or properly prepare for pandemics, I especially liked the 4th point. Even though Germany saw a lot of neoliberal policies being introduced over the past 40 years, it never got the radical makeover Thatcher and Reagan introduced in the UK and US respectively.
the neoliberal reforms were as harsh as in other countries, just more clever. the government got alot of their companies into public trading instead of destroying them like the UK and the US. the National rail company of germany not only exists, its one of the biggest logistic companies in the world(if not the biggest). sames goes for telecommunication and energy. German unions are also very different to UK and US unions. German unions have just one goal, getting more money into the hands of its members. Us and UK Unions are very political. the Us unions are the worst, their goal is to buy political favours, germanies union on the other hand dont usualy endorse anybody.
@@nox5555 German reunification was managed entirely by neoliberal ideologues. At least the economic aspects of it. They brought in consulting firms like McKinsey and others who were tasked with dealing with east-german industry. This industry was estimated to be worth 700b Mark and was eventually "sold" to private West-German industry for -200b Mark. In other words companies got money to take on East-German facilities. Then they went on to dismantle them instead of investing into the region. The consulting firms handling these assets on behalf of the german govt were also consulting the german industry they sold to. Which led to the funny circumstance of one of those firms giving out a memo stating that it should be avoided to sign contracts where the seller and buyer is the same consulting guy. Anyway. It was massive fuck up that seriously hurt east germanys economic potential and has been costing the german govt billions ever since to try to offset the inequality between east and west. Even though reunification itself was a big success, the neoliberal ideas that guided the economic aspects of it proved to have been very bad ones. This instilled early on a certain german scepticism towards neoliberalism in german politics. A sentiment that in many other countries only came much later as a result of the 2008 crisis or the climate crisis. Germany never went all the way when it came to privatizations. It kept strong worker protections in place.(Every company with more than 200 employees needs to have worker representation on the company board for example. Neoliberals couldnt even fathom that) It retained a focus on social services that are partially paid for by private businesses(german healthcare system forces every employer to pay half of the employees healthcare costs). And nowadays mainstream german politicians opely talk about going back to public ownership of crucial industries like transport, infrastructure and others. Especially now that a lot of industries need handouts due to the corona crisis anyway, these handouts can be attached to partial public ownership as a result. In turn this influence would allow the public to force things like environmentally friendly business strategies and other routes that are right but not necessarily the right thing to do from purely economic and short term profit focussed perspectives. Like phasing out fossil fuel powered cars. Investing more into public vs individual transport. etc Generally just ousting business cases that are successful but harmful to society in one way or another. In a neoliberal world that wouldn't work and these business cases would ruin us over time. Not financially but as a species.
As an official of a Regionalliga club, I would like to thank the english FA for allowing investors to ruin football in England. This provides us with a steady stream of english football tourists showing up for our home games, getting totally knackered and then spending inordinate amounts of money on our merch.

Leute die nach 10 Jahren nur gebrochenes Deutsch sprechen wollen es ganz einfach gar nicht, die schaffen sich eine Blase in der sie Leben und interessieren sich nicht für das Land in dem sie leben ...

Amerikaner neigen dazu oft mit anderen Amerikanern sich zu unterhalten, Telefonieren oder Gruppen zu bilden was schlecht ist und je mehr das wird um so mehr baut man sich seine eigene Blase ... ich denke das ist ein Problem mit der Mentalität, Britten bringen sich in eine Nachbarschaft ein, Amerikaner kennen oft viele Nachbarn gar nicht ...
eine Amerikanerin sagte mal, das dass größte Problem was Amerikaner mit den Deutschen haben wenn die hier leben ist, das die Deutschen nichts von Smalltalk verstehen und auch wenig von so etwas belanglosen halten ... ich denk das kann man so stehen lassen ...

Our German authorities seem very modern, flexible and fast, listening to you... interesting that it is worse in other countries, cause we often blame our authorities... yes, football is still much more natural than in the Premier League... I often met English fans and tourists in stadium at my homeclub Mönchengladbach (which is VRR too...), they love our atmosphere in the Germans stadiums... we played vs Man City 4 times in the ECL, and it felt quiet and heartless... the only superb atmosphere I noticed in Britain was in Glasgow when we played Celtic... Best regards, and I‘d like Bochum back in the Bundesliga!

I live in Berlin, you have public transport around the clock. In the night it may take longer, walking longer, but possible.
Some years I was in the Region Hannover district, in a village. There was a bus every 60 minutes, on Sundays every 120 minutes and also in the nights from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday there were two busses in the night for suburbs like me. Driver asks for the stop you want and plans the route individually.
Also it wasn't not expensive to take the train to Berlin - when I booked early undercrowded trains, it was between 19 to 29 EUR each direction and took 2 h main station to main station.
If it goes on like this we might have to annex some more land for people to live. Just joking :D i´m happy you like it here. I do too

@@rolemodel04 that's true, at school you are learning vocabulary and grammar, but speaking with natives will teach you the language. We already thought about holydays in England to reanimate our speaking skills. I'm ok with slow and clear spoken English (most of the TH-camrs are adapted to the abilities of German understanding skills), but a bit scared of English people in their natural habitat, not to mention Scotts, Irish or Welsh (sorry, but what ever you speak, this is not the language I've learned at school).
Try Michael Thomas language course! Very efficient. And start watching movies in German with English subtitles. You’ll be surprised how quickly you will catch on!

that's the first time i hear that from somebody not from germany: bureaucracy (or however you spell that) is functional in germany. but it's true, mainly. if you know what you need for your request (and you'll get that information online or by asking via phone) things normally work out the way you were told they should .... but "normally" leaves enough space for diversion ...

I believe, we have (as far as I know) the best transport-system at the Ruhr. (I have been to Tokyo, and it is good there, but overrated.) ... there is private public treransport all over germany, the difference to the rest of the world is that the local government decides what kind of transport is needed and than they ask for bids from private companies. alot of those buses you use are private buses in service of the local government.

Do you really feel that the German public transport ist that much better than in the UK? I was living in Gravesend, Kent (just outside the London orbit) and I was working in London. So I used public transport all the time. It is maybe a bit more expensive than it is here in Germany, but it is as good. The Kohlenpott works pretty well with public transport but I am living in Cologne now and often working in Düsseldorf and I can't see how this is any better than in England.
Another thing I experienced in England (totally anecdotal of course) when I moved there as a good German obviously one of the first things I did was visiting the town hall to find out what paperwork is necessary to live in the UK. The employees there were extremely nice and helpful. "oh you live in a street with residential parking only, wait we help you to get the necessary paper". "What paperwork do I need to open a bank account?" "Just show them a letter from BT with your name on it." Like really useful help for somebody new to a foreign country. I have the feeling that in Germany whenever you go to an Amt the people there are in a bad mood. It was completely different in England. People are so unbelievably friendly.
Detailverliebt some good points there, the local councils in Blighty can be very helpful but I think here in Germany you have to ask them about it, sometimes they are not very willing to give out info unless asked.. The transport system I think is great, one ticket and I can use the S & U-Bahns as well as the trams.. couldn’t do that in my neck of the woods in Blighty, I know in London it’s different..
Kein Zwanni für nen Steher! - means a Ticket für the Standing Area in the Football Stadium should bist more than 20€. The Fans are fighting for it for years and still are proud about this.
It all depends on where you lived in England. If you lived in London, every city in Germany, would hardly meet your expectations.
Public transport here suuuucks if you dont live in a big city. I have to drive for 40 minutes in the next big city and it costs 10 Euros even so its only 25km just because the route goes trough 5 different zones which means the price and routelength goes up.

Wir brauchen im städtischen ÖPNV unbedingt das Londoner Modell. Die Bankkarte an den Leser halten und schon hat man ein Ticket gekauft. Das ist so bequem und einfach. Gerade gibt es in Bonn eine Feldstudie dazu. In UK kommt man auch ohne Bargeld klar, da jeder Pub die Bankkarte akzeptiert.
Ich werde das Relegationsspiel von Bochum gegen Gladbach nie vergessen. Ihr starken Bochumer habt uns damals beinahe aus der Liga geworfen. Mit viel Dussel haben wir gewonnen. Das Bochumer Stadion erinnert mich immer an den guten alten Bökelberg. Ne super Fankultur habt ihr Bochumer! Das Bermudadreieck kann auch einiges!

It's not quite the same thing. Public services are things like fire services, police, armed forces and even public service broadcasting.
When I mention strategic industries I'm talking about industries which are important for the country's economic development, e.g. energy, public transport, telecommunications etc. All these sectors are largely privatised in the UK.

Great about Germany, as a Person with a Schwerbehindertenausweis (Prove of disability) you can almost travel for free. Stucked elevators, delations etc sucks, because we have to plan the ride to get supportat the Stations etc.
Nicht ganz: ich hab auch einen Schwerbehinderten Ausweis und ich muss ganz normal meine Fahrten bezahlen. Man muss schon eine Geh-Behinderung haben oder eine Art von Behinderung, die es notwendig macht, fahren zu müssen. Zum Beispiel: Epilepsie oder einen Herzfehler. Wenn man bei der Fahrt auf Hilfe anderer Menschen angewiesen ist, kann auch eine Begleitperson kostenlos mitfahren. Aber das alles muss im Ausweis vermerkt sein.

I find transport here quite expensive, but it all depends on what country you compare it with. I preferred free transport in Tallinn :)
And bureaucracy for me here is also a nightmare, smth like it was for u in Spain - different ppl tell me different things and it's way easier to personally come and get Smth than wait for email, post or phone call...

As a political science student who at least partially blames neoliberal ideology for a myriad of issues ranging from the rise of right-wing populism to our inability to tackle climate change or properly prepare for pandemics, I especially liked the 4th point.
Even though Germany saw a lot of neoliberal policies being introduced over the past 40 years, it never got the radical makeover Thatcher and Reagan introduced in the UK and US respectively.
the neoliberal reforms were as harsh as in other countries, just more clever. the government got alot of their companies into public trading instead of destroying them like the UK and the US. the National rail company of germany not only exists, its one of the biggest logistic companies in the world(if not the biggest).

German unions are also very different to UK and US unions. German unions have just one goal, getting more money into the hands of its members.
Us and UK Unions are very political. the Us unions are the worst, their goal is to buy political favours, germanies union on the other hand dont usualy endorse anybody.

They brought in consulting firms like McKinsey and others who were tasked with dealing with east-german industry. This industry was estimated to be worth 700b Mark and was eventually "sold" to private West-German industry for -200b Mark. In other words companies got money to take on East-German facilities.
Then they went on to dismantle them instead of investing into the region.
The consulting firms handling these assets on behalf of the german govt were also consulting the german industry they sold to. Which led to the funny circumstance of one of those firms giving out a memo stating that it should be avoided to sign contracts where the seller and buyer is the same consulting guy.
Anyway. It was massive fuck up that seriously hurt east germanys economic potential and has been costing the german govt billions ever since to try to offset the inequality between east and west.
Even though reunification itself was a big success, the neoliberal ideas that guided the economic aspects of it proved to have been very bad ones.
This instilled early on a certain german scepticism towards neoliberalism in german politics.
A sentiment that in many other countries only came much later as a result of the 2008 crisis or the climate crisis.
Germany never went all the way when it came to privatizations. It kept strong worker protections in place.(Every company with more than 200 employees needs to have worker representation on the company board for example. Neoliberals couldnt even fathom that)
It retained a focus on social services that are partially paid for by private businesses(german healthcare system forces every employer to pay half of the employees healthcare costs).
And nowadays mainstream german politicians opely talk about going back to public ownership of crucial industries like transport, infrastructure and others. Especially now that a lot of industries need handouts due to the corona crisis anyway, these handouts can be attached to partial public ownership as a result.
In turn this influence would allow the public to force things like environmentally friendly business strategies and other routes that are right but not necessarily the right thing to do from purely economic and short term profit focussed perspectives.
Like phasing out fossil fuel powered cars. Investing more into public vs individual transport. etc
Generally just ousting business cases that are successful but harmful to society in one way or another.
In a neoliberal world that wouldn't work and these business cases would ruin us over time. Not financially but as a species.
As an official of a Regionalliga club, I would like to thank the english FA for allowing investors to ruin football in England.
This provides us with a steady stream of english football tourists showing up for our home games, getting totally knackered and then spending inordinate amounts of money on our merch.
