Fun fact about the guy who pirated/republished LOTR back in the day, it was his wife who years later would go on to publish The Name of the Wind and Christopher Ruocchio!
The music industry tried to stop pirated music. However, when music was being downloaded free, it increased artists fan base and demand on concert tickets, driving concert ticket prices from $10 to $1000 and artists began making most of their revenue from tours.
Artists making most of their money from tours is not necessarily a good thing, if they enjoy touring it's great for them but many artists don't want to spend months on the road every year not seeing their families. They should be able to make a living from selling their music but barely anyone buys music anymore and music streaming only benefits a few people.
Same thing I buy the special edition (often broken binding edition) and I "borrow" the epub version because I prefer to read on my ereader and I'm not going to pay for something I already have. Honnestly we should have access to the epub version when we buy the physical copy...Same thing if I want to read the book in another language, I'm not going to pay twice.
Huge prices is why most people in my country pirate things (including me, sometimes). Our salaries are the equivalent to 300 usd, rent is around 150-200 usd. That leaves you with only 100-150 usd to pay taxes and buy food... do you think I can afford a book that's 20usd and risk not liking it? No. If I read it for free, digitally, then I'll save money for a few months and buy a physical copy because I love having books in my shelves! But I need to know I won't waste money that I can spend on food. Now, I'm really lucky and live with my parents, so I don't have to pay rent, that leaves me with more margin to spend on books, but I still only buy physical copies of books that I know I like or will like, the rest I read from scribd with is an affordable subscription for ebooks and audiobooks.

This reminds me of how a lot of authors, especially self published authors put their first book or a novella for free on ebook. I know I got a lot of ebooks for free on Black Friday as well. Then a lot on sale for $0.99. So far I have found multiple authors I will be buying in the future and most likely will be buying physical copies of the books I already read for free.
I was reading a comment from a Portuguese girl who pirates her books, she said it was because books don’t get translated into Portuguese that quickly, and the libraries near her only have older books and she can read English so she used to get them from the UK but then Brexit happened which led to customs charges and stuff (I don’t completely understand it even as a Brit) and now it’s completely unaffordable to import the books and now she has no choice but to pirate them. She said if the books she’s into get translated she’d buy them. I’m now collecting the physical copies of a book series I read on KU. (Not that KU is piracy of course but I loved those books so I want to support the two authors of the series)
Yes, those importation taxes are annoying. I do believe they are no longer applied to books, at least the latest ones I bought from the UK and USA didn't have taxes no more. But a couple of years ago it was pretty much more than the book itself. I got a collector's book for my wife, it cost £60, the taxes were roughly £30. I has to do with the UK no longer being part of the common market. I think it was something put into place by the EU to encourage people to shop within the EU, but it's dumb because some items are just not available in Europe. My wife got me an Alvvays hoodie for Christmas, had to pay €18 taxes, but those are not available here.
Not exactly piracy, but Will Wight (author of Cradle) gave away every single book he wrote for free on Amazon before his last book came out. Because I’m a greedy man, I grabbed them all not even knowing if I’d ever read them. Turns out I did, I loved them, bought all the audiobooks, the new books he didn’t give for free, and I just bought a few of the leatherbounds on his kickstarter. The best thing is I know I’m not unique there. He has such a huge fanbase and I know that has to be a big part of it. Personally I find it extremely difficult to pay $10 or more for a book that I don’t know I’ll like. There’s a number of authors who give away the first in a series for free, and while this isn’t a valid strategy for many authors, I think more should consider it. Sanderson gives away Warbreaker for free on his website. Ryan Cahill gives away one of his prequel books to his main series for free on his website if you join the mailing list. Anyway, I agree with you guys. Great conversation and a fun listen!
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned that if a KU (kindle unlimited) author’s work is pirated and it catches Amazon’s attention, they can pull that book from the shelves. KU has an exclusive contract with that author, and the digital pages read can be the bulk of earnings for newer, and especially independent, authors. Once you are flagged by the ‘ZON, then it’s on the author to prove they didn’t give permission for their book to be downloaded. Getting reinstated can be a nightmare as you might imagine, and while the author is trying to prove their “innocence” they aren’t making any money at all.
This was a very interesting topic to discuss and I loved listening to your opinions, especially living in India where piracy is basically everywhere. I don't know if you know this but the college I went to, professors actually send downloaded copies of textbooks to students so that they don't have to buy the books themselves. At that times I felt that this was a necessary evil because there were about 200 students referring to a book but the library had about 50 copies of it, so the other 150 would at least have some way of reading. And overpricing is such a pain. You can check this right now, but for some reason, Rhythm of War is currently sold is two parts in India, each one costing 600 rupees each which is a lot. When it first came out, I bought the whole book for 700 books which already was overpriced but right now its just ridiculous. Its the same thing for Tress, Yumi and the nightmare painter and other Sanderson books. There are some books that are just not available at all. So for me, the best I could do was buy one or two books of the series, and 'loan' the other epubs onto my kindle which of course I bought.

I really enjoyed this discussion, however, I think you left an important topic, which is, dead authors. I just watched a discussion video of Empire of Silence with the author and he said this stuff exactly. He doesnt care about piracy of his books cause it gets his name and books out there.
I'm from Argentina, and my country is going through a terrible economic crisis. I read A LOT and I used to buy all my books, but is just not possible for me anymore. As Richard said in the example from Brazil, it would be a really big portion of my income. However, I always save and try to buy the books i really like. To put the Brazilian pricing in perspective. $10 US can MAYBE buy you dinner at McD's for one, right? That same $10 to is about 50 BRL. I am in Sao Paulo, the Brazilian equivalent of New York City, so not at ALL a cheap place. Earlier this week, using iFood, I ordered a big portion of steak, in a 5 cheese sauce, with sides of home fries and white rice for 165 BRL, and the portion size was so big, it was enough for me and my GF to make 2 meals, almost 3, for each of us. So that 50 BRL was about equal to steak dinner for 2, delivered, when ordering in bulk as I did lol. If I make the comparison using the same restaurant, I can still order 2 Big Macs, a medium fry and a soda delivered for 47 BRL. But that comparison just says more about how overpriced McD's is here lol.
Intellectual property is a government scam that subsidizes established/successful creators and consequently stifles the creativity/profitability of newcomers.
How about someone who collects ebooks out of a collecting obsession - maybe thousands. You can't read them all. You try some and DNF and you try some and finish them. And for the books you really enjoyed you end up buying a hard copy and end up with hundreds on your shelf. These kind of people must end up spending a lot of money into the industry, you think?
You both alluded to it around the 15 minute mark, but when I listened, I couldn’t help but think of a MrBeast interview where he talked about how he loved it when people clipped his videos or live streamed themselves watching, as all it really did was drive more viewers to his channel.
Something related that makes me super mad is that the office is on Peacock. When it was on Netflix it was the most popular show in the world and now nobody is going to watch it. And if you do pay your not at all supporting the people who actually made the show.
I pirated "Red Rising" 3 years ago. I am now a huge fan and have bought every book and audio book in the series.

Marketers and salespeople use this reciprocity effect as well.
Very true
Intellectual property is a government scam that subsidizes established/successful creators and consequently stifles the creativity/profitability of newcomers.
Oh man, I know this is a depressing message but I would like to have a friendship as you two have. 😅

Pirate got me here
Can we get an AI generated audiobook of LOTR read by the Beatles please 🙏

Oh it shall come 🤝
You both alluded to it around the 15 minute mark, but when I listened, I couldn’t help but think of a MrBeast interview where he talked about how he loved it when people clipped his videos or live streamed themselves watching, as all it really did was drive more viewers to his channel.
Yes I remember him saying that! - definitely similar
Something related that makes me super mad is that the office is on Peacock. When it was on Netflix it was the most popular show in the world and now nobody is going to watch it. And if you do pay your not at all supporting the people who actually made the show.
I guess you can say Peacock gave everyone the bird…
Ill leave. Sorry. Richard, dont fire me.
lol, I won’t tell Richard
So you're saying we should keep paying artists with "exposure?" 😅
Dont you dare try to get us in a lawsuit this early in our TH-cam venture 😂
