Just saw the movie for the first time. Hypnotic is a good word to describe it. What a performance by these two. Joaquin and Philip. They make nowadays actors look like amateurs. You can actually believe they are not characters. I think this movie is about the master taking a student in. He was the perfect candidate for Philip's character to test his work. And we saw the evolution of Joaquin which proved the master work was actually doing well to him . I think Joaquin felt something true when the master interviewed him. That's why he wanted to continue and not run away like he's always doing until that point. The prison scene was also great. And then Joaquin goes through the intervention of the actual work to try to heal him and make him more of a man and not a victim from war. In the end even though he's not completely healed I think he is more calm and confident about himself and willing to deal with reality and I think it is because of the master work which a lot of people doubt it wasn't just a play for taking people's money. Which in times I also thought because every time Philip's character was tested he would blow off some steam pretty quick. But what a great movie. In multiple runs you get more clarity, for sure. But what a watch.

I really want to own this on Blu-ray because its the type of movie than benefits from home viewing more than public viewing. The ability to stop the film and either think about or discuss the scene is a great feature when watching films like The Master. It's also great for re-watching!
    Great review as always.

Great review. I'm trying to wrap my mind around it. I agree though that I don't think it's quite on the level of There Will Be Blood, but its so impeccably made. Everything. The direction, performances, writing(for the most part), cinematography, and score are masterful. Hopefully it won't be another 5 year wait for PTA's next flick.

Very good review. My favorite review of the from TH-cam. critics saying it was not emotional enough is absurd. The emotions flow out through the screen. One is the best acted movies seen in awhile and visually amazing. I want to see it again

"You can't take this life straight can you?"
The question is directed at Freddie Quell, but this diagnosis extends to Lancaster Dodd as well. Both men are bored by what life has brought them. One invents a fantastical back story behind all that lies before him in a desperate attempt to escape the pain of the mundane, while the other binge drinks toward a destructive abyss.
No film has proved with more power the irrelevance of plot when you have characters this complex.
I, along with Paul Thomas Anderson (according to his interview with the Los Angeles Times), do consider The Master to be his magnum opus. I personally found the characters of Freddie Quell and Lancaster Dodd to be far more nuanced and inherently compelling than Daniel Plainview and Eli Sunday... not to mention the actors who embodied them (Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman) who were both at heavy weight title fight level unlike Paul Dano who was easily outmatched by Daniel Day Lewis.
The Master is still in the lead for my favorite film of the decade.

I just saw LAWRENCE OF ARABIA for the first time the other day (50th anniversary in limited theatrical release). For what it was, David Lean seemed to be creating a new form, a new genre, something that, at least in 1962, had never done before. THE MASTER is a film with the same vigor. As Paul Thomas Anderson gives his progress report on cinema, innovating new ways to tell of a story based on classic fundamentals, he is also simultaneously intellectualizing his audience. He challenges us. Great!

before watching your review, ill give my thoughts:
i thought this was the best acting by a cast in years.. the film looked breathtakingly beautiful and it had a great story. i thought the ending lacked closure and ambiguity, and the overall film lacked emotion.the film was building up to something (or so i thought) and it didnt deliver. i wish i didnt feel this way seeing as PTA is my favorite filmmaker, but i'd say this is his 4th best film (of 6).i'd recommend it but i was a bit disappointed

Did you get to see it in 70mm? I had to see it in 35mm, it still looked good but it felt like I wasn't getting the film in its full potential. The best thing about the movie is Anderson's visual craftsmanship, but it lacks story telling in the second half.

I think P. T. Anderson has a lot to say about sex in this film. I'm not quite sure what those things are yet, but Freddy's obsession with sex certainly speaks to a greater thematic drive of the film. Particularly when Freddy has that eerie vision of all the women at the party dancing naked with the Master. In that scene, Amy Adams' character is starring at Freddy, almost as if she can read his mind. Very creepy and interesting.

This movie sucks!!! One of the most overhyped and overrated piece of garbage I’ve ever seen. Same goes for there will be blood. I miss the early years of PTA. Boogie Nights and Punch Drunk Love are the only good movies that dude has ever made.

Big fan of Anderson but........this was a terrible movie. Hated it from start to finish. It was too much flash and no substance. I would rank it amongst the worst films I've seen this year. But then again I am a person who likes Magnolia and Boogie Nights more than There Will Be Blood.
