Phantom Thread is one of my favorite films of all time; it’s so simple, yet it’s so complex. Vicky Krieps was an outstanding supporting actress. The argument at dinner with Reynolds is the best scene of the film, in my opinion. Her acting talent really shone through in that scene. I became an instant fan. The sets, wardrobes, and especially the music really make this film work.

I feel that Lesley Manville is the treasure here. It seems as if she is one with the audience, watching the relationship between DDL and Vicki Krieps develop, understanding that is will not be healthy. She is sure of this and knows why. I was sure of this and thought I knew why. The reveal is perverse but is a different way than I thought. Subversive, like Lolita, but for different reasons. By the way, Johnny Greenwood is a genius.

I always have had that Kubrick vibe from Anderson that people have always claimed belonged to Nolan but his last few films especially this and the master feel very Stanley Kubrick I didn’t like the master. When I first saw it I have seen it three times since then and I think it’s the best film of 2012 i know that isn’t a popular opinion but it really does grow on you overtime as I think the phantom thread will I think it’s a great work although it won’t be for everyone and a wonderful send off for the magnificent Day Lewis , Paul Thomas Anderson has become one of those directors whom for me I personally have to see everything he does. I wonder if Daniel said “I’m finished” At the end!, it is his last film after all. Maybe he will go back to Italy to make shoes again!?! Or maybe we will get to see him do something on stage in the theatre. That’s something I would love to see.

Given how much DDL collaborated with PTA for the role, I'm wondering how much DDL put of himself with the character because of how far he goes with his method acting. If any of this is true with himself. I loved this film, top 10 of the year, and stellar acting.
Possibly the only film in which I've ever seen Daniel Day-Lewis respond to another actor. He usually doesn't even make eye contact, but in these he seemed to open up a bit. I guess there's hope for him yet.
What is your take on Hard Eight?? Apart from There Will Be Blood this is the PTA film that I rewatch the most. Surprisingly, it gets mentioned the least whenever anyone speaks on PTA. I'm starting to think that my affinity for films that take place in gambling towns has left me a blind spot when it comes to that film. Anyway, love your reviews. Please keep em coming :)

Phantom Thread was too egotistical IMO. I hate to do this, but the 10s and 9.5s are ridiculous. This film was not better than Hard 8, Magnolia, Boogie Nights, There will Be Blood, or that movie with Adam Sandler. It wasn't very entertaining. This film was made to win an Oscar(s), not to entertain. It was made so people who critique movies could separate themselves by showing everyone what they know and what the Layman doesn't. I thought this movie pandered too much to critics and PTA fans. With that being said, great review. This movie gets better after thinking about it.

the ending is bizarre....it's a movie for bdsm and feminist types that want to subjugate successful genius men to a subtle yet subordinate role to women...it's basically saying that a man can't be strong in his own right and that he needs a woman to maintain his composure....it's utter rubbish but the acting is superb

"Never Cursed" is one of the most incredible pieces of film music I've heard in a while. The scene where it was used almost brought me to tears.

GnB I also saw it twice, about 5 days apart. It just stays with you and becomes so much richer on second viewing. This is an almost perfect movie.

Not the biggest fan of 1990s PTA, though I admire the craft. Punch-Drunk Love was more a step in the right direction.

Score and soundtrack so good like CMBYN. Uses the same Schubert trio Kubrick did different movement. Greenwood should win for best score.
I just couldn't buy into the film. Perhaps I need to see it again, but TBH, the first viewing didn't really do enough to motivate a second viewing.
