Heritage House, a historic gem waiting for its new custodian.
In 1913, the Wanganui Gentlemen’s Club needed new premises so made an offer to the Wanganui Bowling Club for their green. The talented Rush and James, Architects from Hastings won the contract for the design of the new club house and work was started in 1914 by the Whanganui building firm Russell and Bignell. The work was completed by the end of 1914 and the grand opening was held the following year. RG Talboys and associates designed the original laundry that was added at the back in 1947.
The Wanganui Gentlemen’s Club, now known as The Wanganui Club, sold the premises in 2002 into private ownership. They remain a big part of Heritage House as the Club are still tenants in part of the building.
The current owners have spent eight years working hard to give the building back its grandeur. They also gave the building the name of Heritage House, deciding that it was fitting for a building with its history. They undertook a complete refurbishment of the building, which was no mean feat as it is comprised of approximately 1,475sqm of floor space. From the moment you step inside the stunning lobby with its gorgeous chandeliers, you will find that every room has been well refurbished while maintaining many original features.
The business side of things have also been well developed. The office spaces are all fully tenanted, the building and its beautiful gardens are available to hire as a wedding, events and conference venue which has proved to be popular. The gardens are also home to the Summer House which can be used for intimate outdoor functions. Upstairs are two Airbnb five-star apartments and also the private owners’ apartment.
