  • Bernard Braden's series 'On The Braden Beat' (1965) was enlivened by Peter Cook's monologues in the character of E.L.Wisty. Here he talks about spinach.

Bernard Braden deserves to be remembered for bringing Cook to a mass audience, and for his show working on behalf of the consumer; one which didn't feature vegetables shaped like genitals.

the new wave of comedian, taking a swipe at everything that was off limits before the 60's. and it holds up remarkably well 57 years later.

Thank you for posting this classic clip - still so fresh. Hardly anything survives of this series, sadly, so I can only imagine Bill Oddie as 'Hooligan' the folk singer!

It's amazing that "Regina" gag got past the censors.

Clearly where David Mitchell saw the ‘mispronounciation’ gag, and slid it into a sketch with Robert Webb. Can’t beat the original. Even PC appeared to struggle getting it out. Fabulous man.

Richard Humphreys replied to my comment by stating that Esther Rantzen was part of Braden's show; well we all know what happened after Bernard was dislodged.

Veritable words of wisdom regarding a truly disgusting tasing vegetable. His relative sounds a trifle like my mum, getting us kids to eat stuff that I never actually saw her bother with.

Damn! I made the mistake of looking directly at his eyes which ruined the whole bit for me. You can see he is looking slightly to his left and you can see slight horizontal movement which mean he's reading it. Have to admit that for the casual observer he does a good job of making it appear he is looking at the camera. All in all - I always enjoyed Peter Cook. He was brilliant!
