My dad, coming from the Old Country, knew nothing about couch grass (pronounced cooch) or twitch grass. He mantained that the best way to control it would be to use a cultivator and drag the roots to the surface to dry out, but of course when it rained those would all resprout . When the neighbour (Canadian spelling) used a disc harrow on them, he would lament " you're cutting them all into little pieces and you'll have so many more to deal with" The crop survived and was harvested and then he realized that cutting all those roots doesn't kill the weeds but it sets them back so much that the crop can take over and you can do it again next year.
