Tolton Pace was unlucky with the $1M question. It is such a shock, and in this case very costly, when you think you know something which is not true. It is much worse than just plain not knowing something. Like Tolton, I thought that Marie Curie worked mainly with radium but, as Jeff said, her work on radioactivity was with uranium, although she did discover radium and polonium by extracting them from uranium ore, uraninite (pitchblende). As an aside from reading up on Marie Curie, I also learned that far from being her husband Pier's 'assistant' she was the lead on the radioactivity project and it was Pier who dropped his research work to join Marie's project.
