    I am graduating RN school in December and I want to do CRNA. I’m trying to get into the ICU so I can get my experience they require before applying. I remember one thing that stuck to me when I did my surgery rotation. The surgeon came out highly upset because a patient wasn’t off their metformin long enough before their surgery and asked the nurses do they know what happens when someone receives anesthesia while metformin is still in their body? All the nurses looked and couldn’t answer but I had just studied about it in my diabetic section and anyone who is on metformin need 24 hours for the medication to clear before receiving anesthesia or contrast medium, if not it causes uncontrollable acidosis and AKI. He was like correct!!!😂😂 made my day

    CRNA's are fundamentally a nurse trained form the narrower perspective of a nurse 1st and foremost with a 4 year focus in anesthesia. Nursing pre req courses are not in the same league as pre med prereq courses. Medical school spend 4 years on all organ systems and various hospital rotations. CRNA aren't some unique special bunch that has found a way to learn what medical student learns in less time with less training. An MD is trained from a wideeee ocean perspective of what medicine is and learns to think as an internist 1st and foremost by completing an intern year of various rotations with IM being the longest followed by surgery. Both have a role and are critical to Anesthesia in the U.S. but only 1 is the expert in their field. Lobbying politicians to full practice doesn't bring them to the same education level as an MD.

    Your videos are great!
    As a CRNA (in Anesthesia since 1993, including training), and an educator, I’ve got to say your advice and perspective in all your videos is really spot on.
    It’s refreshing to hear things from the resident and student perspective. You two will continue to grow in your view of patient care and outcomes as you continue on your clinical development journey. Before you know it, patients will become people, and those people will have “lives” that form right before your eyes.
    Your anesthesia plans will become second nature to your practices and you’ll be able to find a joy in the actual good that you both give back to your communities.
    Both of you have programs that are lucky to have you. If you ever decide to move into the Atlanta area I’d be proud to have you as colleagues. And yes, we have all four seasons: 5 days of spring, 355 days of summer, 5 days of fall and 15 minutes of winter.

    I feel that the biggest difference ia that anesthesiologists have more autonomy over their practice. CRNAS have autonomy in some states, but most states require them to be under the supervision of a licensed physician. Aside from that, the education for a CRNA is way shorter. There is no residency and I feel that their pratice follows more of a nursing than medicine model. Loved the video.

    I am still contemplating whether nursing is the best path first. I know pre-med is a track. Nursing is major. I keep seeing that pre-med is better for students who want to prepare for the MCAT/medical school. I have always wanted to become an anesthesiologist since middle school. I am 21 and I just want to feel situated and relieved. I changed my major to nursing 3 times. I am now doing pre-med at a community college for an associate in science and feel a lot more relieved, but not all the way. I am afraid I will regret nursing first because it will give me a job after school. and let me know whether I am capable of going to medical school. I have looked into CRNA and it's not the path I want. I know if I go to med school I will be in debt. Any advice.

    • @najat4339
      @najat4339 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I would major in nursing and take pre req classes for pre-med while doing so. Once you graduate you will be able to be a nurse and/or apply to medical school because you took the right classes. You can make money as a nurse to afford the med application and fly to interviews if you get them. Most people who are in medical school got in on their 3rd time applying to 20+ schools so it’s really expensive. Remember pre-meds are expected to conduct research and get clinical experience along with having a high mcat and high gpa. When having nursing as an undergrad major and working as a nurse you gain a lot of experience that can help you if you want to apply to med/PA/ dentistry school or even continue in nursing to be a NP or CRNA.

    • @elvin509
      @elvin509 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@billr5842 Far more training than a CRNA? Can you explain. Because to my understanding an Anesthesiologist does 1 year as an Intern and then 3 years in Anesthesiology. When they begin the 3 years, they know ZERO Anesthesia. So in reality they get 3 yrs of Anesthesia training. A CRNA also does 3 yrs of Anesthesia Training if they have a DNP degree, and 28-32 months, if they have a Masters Degree. Unless you are calling Medical School "Training" and NOT calling Nursing School plus ICU work "Training", then Im not getting your point

    Try looking into anesthesiologist assistant programs also. Very similar to Crna. Actually the same work. The schooling is two years and I believe is a shorter route. It does have the same requirements to get in as medical school. Also you can only practice as an AA in 16 states. But it's expanding. Thought I'd share for those considering crna school but don't want to go nursing route.

    • @itsyuridesouza
      @itsyuridesouza 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Definitely not the same thing ... Anesthesia Assistants can’t be independent anesthesia providers like CRNAS can. They always need an anesthesiologist breathing down their necks in order to work. They also can’t practice in every state. CRNAs can practice in all 50 states

    • @barnsish

    • @edwardherrera4097
      @edwardherrera4097 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe you mean a DNP. The answer is no. An AA has a bachelors in anything. Does not have to have any medical or science background. They are not nurses. They complete a two year program where they assist anesthesiologist. CRNAs are independent anesthesia providers. They can work solo or in a team based model. DNP is only for nurses who go on to complete an advanced degree such as CRNA. Hope this helps.
